Only in the AFC East could the Dolphins be considered the second-best managed operation

Huh? Why would Marrone rip the organization? Why is Polian leaking that Marrone ripped the organization to such an extent that it changed his mind? Why does it seem all of a sudden everyone loves and esteems Doug Marrone? Bizarre.

Another thing York said at the 49er management press conference was "there are a lot of good football coaches out there". No there aren't, Jed. Not that you are going to get a crack at. So, the 9ers are interviewing Josh McD, Mike Shanahan, and son, and Rex Ryan now. Unless they get Josh, they'll have a much worse coach next year, at least considering who they're talking so far.

Edit, talk about well managed operations got me thinking as well about how many good NFL caliber coaches there were. 49ers, particularly Jed York got killed by press and fans over the Harbaugh fiasco.

Marrone sounds like an ass but there is the possibility that he has real and useful firsthand information on the organization.  Remember Pegula's the prize who made such a big deal about how he took his dog into a meeting with Kraft and how much he loves to drive for hours and hours and how he takes his dog to all of his meetings and how he likes to do unscheduled drop ins on his various businesses.  He might just be a weird or difficult dude

I'm sure Marrone didn't want his thoughts about the organization to be publicly known, nor would Polian want this story told. The source was likely someone within the organization with an ax to grind against the new owners.

FWIW there was a story during the first Pats-Bills game about how Pegula's first meeting with Marrone he was rambling on and on and Marrone cut the meeting short and said something along the lines of "excuse me but I have a game to coach this week". IMO it is entirely possible Marrone just didn't think he could work for the guy long term. Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

I'm pretty sure Pegula shared the story while he was in the booth with whoever was calling the game. He admired Marrone's passion, probably didn't realize he was annoying his employee.

Yeah pretty sure you are correct now that I think about it. He seemed oblivious.

Marrone may have ripped the org simply because he did not get the contract extension he wanted.

After Marrone left, Polian said the job description changed - instead of being an advisor of sorts, he was going to have to rebuild the organization. He also may have wanted more money for this, which the Pelugas were unwilling to shell out.

@DarrenDegaetano: I have been told #Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has expressed interest in getting out of his contract.

@DarrenDegaetano: There is a lot of pressure on #Eagles majority owner Jeff Lurie right now. Someone in organization should speak.

@DarrenDegaetano: Let me state, it was a source that works for team. Not saying it will happen, but things look bumpy within team. #Eagles

According to Eckel, the Kelly-Roseman tension increased Monday when Kelly narrowly painted the GM as just a salary-cap manager in a news conference. The quote:
I understand [the salary cap], but that's really what [Roseman] does an outstanding job of. I think since I've been here, one of the attractive things about this job, there are not cap issues. You don't look at it and go, 'Oh, my God. We're going to have to cut 12 players because we're going to be $40 million over the cap.' He does an outstanding job of that. That's his training."
That quote "infuriated" Roseman, Eckel says.

Thank you.

It is beyond rich watching Bill Polian discuss this on ESPN right now.

Wow. I'm 90% sure the Jets and Bills could never pull if off but the idea that Chip Kelly could be a free agent HC while they have vacancies is frightening. Please stay put or go to SF/Chi!

Lurie has been a pretty good owner overall but it would be mindblowing if he essentially chose Howie Roseman over Chip Kelly. Guys like Roseman (sharp on the business side, nothing really offered on the football side) can be easily found. Guys like Kelly, not so much. At least Baalke had a track record of success in football operations (drafting, etc) that sort of justified York siding with him against Harbaugh.

Hypothetically, Kelly could be the get-out-of-jail-free card for York/Baalke. But absent a ransom of the sort that the Glazers paid for Gruden, I don't see Lurie letting Kelly go to another team, especially in the same conference.

So I'm assuming Chip Kelly leaked this, and Luria freaked at the thought of losing him

I did not realize the backdrop. According to PFT.com, Howie forced Joe Banner out a couple of days ago, and Kelly had been complimentary of Banner. So Kelly said screw this, forced this showdown with Roseman and won it.

I don't understand why apparently smart and certainly well intentioned people like Lurie allow non-football executives like Roseman to throw their weight around. Someone said it above: you can find capable people to run the business side. Not so much the football side.

So yeah, that's a lot of responsibility for a guy in his second year. But if I'm Kelly and have no confidence in a guy like Roseman, I don't allow Roseman to screw my career and the team.

I think it's hard to know what Roseman really brings---salary cap has football aspects to it as well.

I can also imagine owners who are 'business people' often are drawn to execs who speak their language....and trust them more than 'football guys' who perhaps don't interact the same way.

  1. Is that because he was a dick to CFB legend Bill Snyder yesterday, or because he is Santa Clara bound? The Trojan fan in me hopes he is headed north.

LL may be heading into semi-retirement but Lucchino lives. Nice going new owner; you just made the job a lot more attractive. Why not take the high road?

It's different because the other side fired the first shot (though as I said, I don't think Marrone was the source for that story). I agree that the Bills should have taken the high road, but it's hard to let a malicious story about you go unanswered, even if it's in your best interest to do so.

Hoo boy, the Bills want to sink Marrone:

His first press conference as Jets head coach should be fun.

ESPN story that Marrone was pissed at the Watkins trade:  http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12118625/doug-marrone-did-not-approve-sammy-watkins-draft-day-trade-buffalo-bills

Marrone was not in favor of Buffalo surrendering a future first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in a trade that did not involve a quarterback, sources said.
There are different accounts of exactly how unhappy Marrone was, with some sources recalling he stormed out of the room, and other sources simply saying he walked out of the room.

Apparently hell has frozen over and Armageddon is upon us

I can't believe it. Is it possible that he hates the Bowlens more than Marc Davis after the way he was forced out of Denver?

Marc has gone out of his way to mend many of the fences that his dad broke, the best example being the picture below. Like all of Marc's actions, I think it is focused on winning the vote to get the owner's approval to move to LA/Vegas/San Antonio. Proving to the rest of the league that he is not his father is step one of that process.
