It’s pretty easy to know the Bankroll Boyz aren’t betting savants just by listening to them. Their analysis is mostly gobbledeegook, mixed with “wrangle” stuff.

A few years ago I used to like their segment because it was funny, and sports betting still had that illegal sheen to it. T&R played into that aspect heavily. Now that it’s legal the segment isn’t fun anymore, since Rich in particular takes them seriously.

I'd be curious to know what happens to their segment/s when football season rolls around. They partner with FD I believe, or one of the books, so if anything we may see way more of them in a few weeks

About 8:15 or so this morning, they did a bit with corny baseball songs that had me laughing out loud in the car. Mostly due to Fred.

Listening to them talk about old comedy albums was great. Definitely in my wheelhouse as I'm the same age as them.

In middle school, one of my good friends had an older brother (he was in HS at the time) that lent us a copy of Adam Sandlers' "Stan and Judys' Kid" comedy album. I want to say this was in the '99-'01 time frame.

We were obsessed, it was full of goofy and profane skits and songs.

Back to the bit this morning - that was classic T&R gold. Start with a weird and obscure subject that they both relate to, Fred starts to riff, Rich adds in little quips and name drops, and Fred builds off that with more riffs.

It is the radio version of watching Rajon Rondo and KG back in the day use their skill and rapport to make plays on the fly.

Never listened to that one but (think it was his first album) "They're All Gonna Laugh at You!" was in constant rotation when I was fresh out of high school. "Longest Pee" and "Beating of a high school librarian"
Just so silly and irrelevant.
Need to give them a re-listen.

edit: weird, Amazon Music has Gonna Laugh but it only has six tracks and seems to be missing the best ones, original album has like 15+.

That first Jerky Boys album made me laugh harder than I've ever laughed in my life. I can even remember where I was the first time I heard it and I still think it's funny (as are the sequels. Movie, though? That never happened).

I agree with their points on Carlin. Tons of respect for him and what he did to influence the comedians I like, but by the time I finally went back and listened it didn't hit as hard for me just because of what I was already accustomed to.

They're All Gonna Laugh At You holds up. It's ridiculous enough and not so set in its era or outside of current standards that it's aged poorly or become cringeworthy. Toll Booth Willie and Fatty McGee push the limit but I'd be lying if I said I didn't still find both hilarious (the whole album is on Apple Music if you're looking - I just checked).

The other big comedy album I remember from back then is Denis Leary's No Cure for Cancer, which has not aged as well. Now that I've gotten to my 40s I know way too many people that heard "Asshole" and took it as life advice.

I saw Leary do a stand up special on TV when I was a kid, and I thought it was funny because he was aggressive and unabashedly "Boston" in his delivery. I had a few uncles and sports coaches who talked and sounded just like him. Agreed that a lot this stuff hasn't aged well and was very much "for that specific time". I think of Leary's bit that goes "Why cant we just have COFFEE flavored coffee, huh?!"

For perspective - At a young age, I was first introduced to George Carlin as "Mr. Conductor" on Shining Time Station, a Thomas the Tank Engine show that was on WGBH. (Ringo Starr played that role as well).

To bring it all back - so many good T&R bits are related to pop culture from years ago and how it shapes our personalities and senses of humor.

Wasn't Leary one of those comedians who got a reputation as a joke thief? Like word would get around about a hot up and coming comic still doing local sets and the comic would be waiting in the green room to start his gig before someone would walk in and give him a heads up that Leary just sat down. Comic had to take out his best jokes because he knew Leary was there to grab them as his own.

Leary has always been accused of ripping off Bill Hicks, I don't know how much of that is true and how much of it is revisionist given Hicks' passing.

Can't remember where I heard it but years ago was listening to someone on radio talk about what a jerk Greenberg is. Tries to cultivate this public persona where he's just a regular nice guy joe, but in reality is very much the "Do you know who I am?" guy who treats the little people working around him like shit.
He's also utterly boring, that he's had a career in radio and TV for so long is amazing.

I’ve known a bunch of people who’ve worked with him and I’ve never heard a bad word.

He’s good at what he’s asked to do. Which is much, much different than what T&R are asked to do.

I mean, Mike and Mike was on for like almost two decades. Get Up had a rough start for sure but it’s ratings have consistently gotten better. You can not like him but you don’t stay on air as long as Greeny has with bad ratings.

This is the key point. Fred shitting on Greenberg is like a jazz musician saying a classical musician has no talent. They're two completely different types of musicians.

And the comment about "all it takes is one person... ONE PERSON... to like you and that's it" sounded a bit like whistling past the graveyard to me... contract is up soon and Fred is the least reliable person at the station. Who is that one person at Beasley?

Isn’t the story that when T&R were moving to mornings / sports at the advent of the Hub, Reiss was auditioned to be the Wallach role? I think they’ve talked about that - and that all parties are kind of glad it didn’t happen that way. Glad they’ve continued to build that relationship, he does have a unique rapport with the show.

I don’t remember that rumor, but it’s been a long time. The only rumor i remember and Fred & Rich have brought it up a number of times but the fact that the Lodge members “knew” T&R would fail and were actively going after their jobs before TSH even started and basically said “when T&R fails, I’m here”

All i know is that if Grande gets the Celtics Radio Gig, RJ is an immediate upgrade in that seat.

IIRC, you're both right. I think Rich told the story that dirtynine cited last year when they had Reiss on for the first time in awhile. They've definitely mentioned that most folks (not Reiss) did expect them to fail. Hell, I'm pretty sure Rich admitted he was one of them!

And yes, absolutely agree that RJ will be a great third seat. Hope it works out for all parties to make that happen.

I assume you mean Wallach? And yea, I’m rooting for him to get that job for this reason alone. They may want someone younger though.

Fred talked about this the other day, but the 98.5 app continues to be a mess. It won’t play in the background, which renders it useless when I’ve tried to listen to certain hours of the show on-demand.

I generally use the Audacy app for live streaming since it’s more stable. But they don’t have the on-demand content on that.

More incompetence from Beasely.

The iPhone's Music app streams 98.5 via IHeartRadio. There are radio apps, such as TuneIn, that can play the station.

Fred said yesterday in his typical condescending way that Mac would be lucky to be like Chase Daniel as a career backup and that Daniel was every bit as good at Mizzou that Mac was at Bama. Now I am not disputing that but come on, now Fred is a big college football guy and remembers Daniel’s collegiate career? Daniel was a stud in college but Fred didn’t know anything about him.

I know I'm late to the party but 17 year old me worked "with" Reiss about 9 lifetimes ago at a local newspaper. I was a HS child writing about other HS sports. Nicest guy in the world to me, a kid trying to get an in.

Also worked alongside Breer. Pardon me while I don't heap the same praise on him.

I like the weekly hour they spend with Breer, but a lot of his shtick is just rattling off lists. He’ll make a category (“teams that started a rookie QB”) and then just list 7-10 examples (“look at Dallas with Dak, look at….”). It’s not always making a point, it’s just saying a lot of factual information.

Not sure about the morning, but he did audition for afternoon drive in the Mazz role.

Is anyone else tired of the numerous ads that have suddenly appeared with the obnoxious townie-sounding guy? The food truck, the electric company, the tequila ad... each ad is an awful schtick.

He did. NBC Sports Boston for some reason hasn't been interested in moving him over to TV in the past. But really, its Rich Gotham and the Celtics' call. That wouldn't be the worst option. Scal is going nowhere, that much is certain.
