Man for all of the hype of that draft class... Lawrence looks like he has star potential, but I think we're looking at 3 total busts and 1 mediocrity.

It is so worth a shot. The Pats could even exercise the 5th year option on both him and Mac if they wanted to and their QB cap hit wouldn't be unreasonable. And if Mac stinks this year, you just exercise it on Lance if you like him and give him a chance next year.
Man, spending 45+ million on QB while not having an established top tier starter would suck.

I think the 49ers know, and they're making him third string behind Purdy and Sam Freaking Darnold.
Agreed, and I’d generally trust them given their ability to create offense. If this were a top 3 pick DB, I’d give it a flyer because BB can make chicken salad out of chicken shit there, but at QB, I’d trust the Niners that maybe there’s no there there.

Not sure I’d put Fields in the bust column just yet. Very dangerous runner who may still have upside to his passing game. Flashed enough last year that I don’t think the Bears are giving up on him.

Word. We won't really know if Fields is a bust until he gets to play in a place that has an actual offensive system. Chicago was just about the worst place he could end up.

We know about Lance. If he can't make QB2 in San Francisco, there is no hope. Those guys know how to scheme.

There's talk (Reiss) that Mac may not play tomorrow night. No sense getting him hit behind patchwork OL.

That kind of tracks for me - seems reasonable that this is the equivalent of the old preseason week 4 game, not the 3rd game dress rehearsal.

Yeah, but in that example these guys played a lot in game 3.

Man I don’t know. Limited weapons sure but it’s not like he has Patricia out there-Fields has been limited in the passing game with two different real offensive coordinators. Perhaps that’s a reflection in what they see in Fields and how little they trust him rather than a sign of how limited their systems are.

I'm just saying. Who was the last great Bears quarterback? The last great Bears offense was probably 1986, and that was with an all-world running back. Team has been loading up on defense and kick returners since before color TV was invented.

My main point is that we know that Lance is bad, because San Fran couldn't find a use for him. Fields might be bad too, but I just don't think that "sucks in Bears offense" is conclusive.

Wasn’t the Bill Walsh rule you basically can tell at about 35 starts? Which I’m not saying is right in every case but it means that Fields and Jones better show something this season.

Outside of Kmet, who is at best a rich mans Henry, can you even name a CHI WR from last season? Mooney went down early, Claypool was kind of there but mostly hurt. N'Keal Harry was starting for CHI at one point. The NE weapons we bemoan would have all started in CHI save for Kmet over the dredge CHI had.
CHI also had a new OC in 2022, previous one didn't call any runs for Fields in his rookie year so it was about Patricia level bad coaching.

At which point did we all collectively decide Bill Belichick is a glorified DC who offers zero help on the offensive side of the ball? The Chicago coaching staff as a whole is vastly inferior to New England's.

According to Google maps, somewhere between McDaniels Drive and the corner of Judge & Patricia.

Not sure where else to post this but I’m at the Springsteen concert tonight and there is a huge echo off the new video board. Thinking it could have a major impact on crowd noise this year. It might be MUCH louder.

This is a generations old problem. I mean, seriously, Sid Luckman is probably the greatest QB in that franchise’s history. The other options being Jay Cutler and Jim McMahon. It’s just a decades long horror show. I lit a candle for poor Justin the minute the Bears drafted him.

0 Bears have throw for 4000 yards in a season. Literally 0.

It's a truly incredible statistic.

I am so used to New England cynicism that when I read the original post, I thought he was referring to Mac as the third bust and not Fields.

It is absolutely hilarious. Their single-season passer rating for a full season is by...Mitch Trubisky at 95.4 in 2018. Not only have they not had a 4000 yard passer, they haven't had a single season with 30 passing TDs.

Their best ever single season QB performance may have been Erik Kramer back in like 1994 or whatever.

1995 yeah. Pretty solid that year: 60.3%, 3,838 yds, 29 td, 10 int, 93.5 rating

That's amazing that that's probably the best passing season in franchise history. You'd think by dumb luck they'd have something much better at least once.

This made me look up how many 1000 yard WR seasons they've had. 18. Kind of funny but there have actually been teams with fewer, such as the Browns, Ravens, and Texans. Obviously, the latter 2 aren't nearly as old. Speaking of the Ravens, their WR single season yardage record is 1,201 by Michael Jackson in 1996.

This is a franchise that went a whole season ('72) with a starting QB who had a 38% completion rate (but ran for 950 yds at 7 yds per carry). Must be something in the Halas DNA.

That level of multi-generational futility at the position is almost impossible to achieve by accident. You’d think they’d have walked into one elite, long term starter by now. They’ve always kind of been my team B. The parade of mediocrity at the position through the years is astounding. So many guys they thought were the answer, and completely flamed out. Peter Tom Willis, anyone?

You don't even need an elite guy. Steve Burlein, Brad Johnson, Jake Plummer, Jay Schroeder, Scott Mitchell, Alex Smith, Jered Goff, Andy Dalton, Kerry Collins, and Marc Bulger have all throw for 4000 yard seasons. Worth mentioning that Matt Schaub has 3 season of 4k yards. Jon Kitna has 2.

Brady and Manning both have 14. Tied for the most all time. The Bears have 0. Brady and Manning have 28.

It is just a wild statistic.

Will be interested to see how much run they give Malik tonight. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything, Tim Tebow was cut after playing a ton in the last preseason game in 2013. But if nothing else, it would be good to see him, get a few more reps to see what they have.
Or maybe not play him much at QB so the rest of the league doesn't know what we have so we can sneak him on the taxi squad.

I live out here in the Chicago burbs, and if I verbally expressed the casual griping about Brady that went on in the gamethreads, my friends would have dragged me outside and beat the shit out of me.

Yeah, it's easy to overreact to the craptastic performance in pre-season, but the fact is...this team's depth (even with the caveat that most of these guys don't constitute their "depth") is REALLY troubling. Just not a good roster. Going to need to continue to rebuild.

Is it the whole team, or just the OL? It seems like the defensive units are quite solid for both now and future seasons. The OL they've run out this preseason is so crazy bad in pass protection though, it's impossible to judge the quality of QB/receiver play. They do seem to do ok in the run game, but giving up a sack on virtually every series is going to kill any chance to win games.

And with as many failed drives, we know for sure that Barringer is a keeper at punter.

The Eagles game might get ugly. That might be the best DL in the league and this OL situation is…troubling.

They ran a lot of the depth guys on the OL tonight and mixed and matched. Between that, the injuries, and Klemm only being here for a bit, I'm not going to panic about the OL yet. Understandable why folks might, since yet again we didn't devote enough FA/draft capital into a critical part of the team (draftnicks everywhere had "OL" as a top need). But it's also conceivable that getting the starters together, working with proper OL coaching and a proper OC, they can raise the floor to "not an Achilles heel". Might look bad for the first month, but that doesn't mean it's a lost cause IMO. Tonight, not sure if Mahomes would have looked good back there though.

Loved Tavai and Roberts tonight. Enjoyed Perkins also. Overall thought that contain was outstanding, love the internal pressure.
Jack Jones is completely lost out there. Mapu too. At least Mapu seems to have the ability to cover guys in man I suppose, but I pray to Jobu that we don't run a ton of zone this year with him on the field.
Outside of Tavai/Roberts/Perkins, best unit was the punting team.

Why does Cam Achord still have a job.

Onto Philadelphia.

I thought the OL was supposed to be fine with Patricia gone. So, what gives? This looks like a really meh roster- especially on the offensive side of the ball. Lacking in both high end talent and depth- despite a QB on a rookie deal. Thankful for the last 25 years but this feels like a year to have minimal expectations and hope to be surprised.

The OL may ultimately turn into a decent unit but they haven’t played much together and they get Philly’s stacked DL in Week 1. It could get really ugly in that one.

I mean, it’s reasonable to be worried about the OL because we haven’t seen them play or play healthy yet. But I do think that they are purposely holding these guys back so they can have as many healthy starters as possible on 9/10.

I guess that makes some sense; seems like there would be value in having guys play together in game situations before the season starts, but theoretically there are ways to accomplish this apart from preseason games. Hopefully the team is better prepared for the regular season than they seemed to be last year.

I don't think there's any way Onwenu and Strange are ready to play 90%+ of the snaps Week 1 after missing so many reps in the off-season, so even if they end up starting my guess is you'll see a lot of rotating up front. If everyone is healthy it's a fine unit, but even that hinges on one of the acquisitions performing adequately at RT and I'll never understand why they didn't just fix that glaring hole in free agency with so many good starters available and the amount of cap space they had.

I'm not that down on the talent level of the offense in general, though, I think the RBs are very good, the receiving corps while lacking elite talent has solid, competent pros 1 through 3 and then young guys with real upside, you have two legit receiving tight ends, BOB is a seasoned, respected play caller... I don't know, I think a lot hinges on Mac because while I believe the talent and coaching to be above average in totality, it's not the type of offense that can make middling QB play look great.

If I recall, Belichick has always viewed the first few regular season games as extended training camp. Probably more so now with the reduced time allowed in camp for full contact practices.

I don’t get too high or too low until we get into Week 4 and get a better handle on who plays where, for how long, with who, etc.
