Hurd looks huge there. I'm sure standing next to Tyquan helps but the dude is stacked.
Listed at 6'5", 230 and you definitely noticed him when standing with the other receivers.

Interesting (likely meaningless) note: at the start of practice, he took several reps running routes with Mac. No defense. Only other guy was David Andrews making the shotgun snap.

Edit: to the size point on Hurd, he’s the one mostly hidden by Parker in this shot. Clearly has a couple inches on all of the other guys in the WR group.

This shot is of the backup OL with McSorley under center, but the OL getting a lot of the reps with Mac seemed to be Brown-Strange-D.Andrews-Murray-Reiff.

BOB seemed grumpy most of the morning, even when things went well. I liked it.

Thanks for starting the thread, T4W.

I notice the OL practicing with the padded helmets. Prevention of concussions is a good thing. Is this a new thing for the league or have I just not paid close enough attention?

Another takeaway for me was that they were giving Mapu reps in a lot of different spots.

He was easy to find since he’s still wearing the red non-contact jersey and he showed up rushing from a LB position, dropping back at safety, over a slot receiver, and even had one rep where lined up on the outside. Didn’t see that coming.

Definitely looked quick off the line. Will be interesting to watch him once he’s in a blue defensive jersey and the pads are on.

That said, looks like I only got shots of him during drills:

As for the specialists, Ryland and Baringer were the first two on the field, working in the back for 5-10 minutes before Zappe, Russey, Mac, and others came out.

Baringer absolutely boomed a couple, but also had a few kicks that seemed “just ok” - consistent with reports from camp. From what I saw, his longest were consistently longer than Waitman’s, but perhaps slightly higher beta. Both seemed better than what we saw at the position for much of last year.

In pre-practice warmups, Ryland looked good, connecting from 45 and 50+. In FG drills late in practice, Folk took the live reps and Ryland was working 15-20 yards behind him.

Below, Ryland and Waitman working on timing. He wasn’t following through and kicking since Folk and co. were right in front of them.

I think they started using them last year. I remember them from watching Hard Knocks.

In full-squad running drills late in practice, Mac was busting his ass. Consistently was one of the first 2 or 3 to make the turn at each line and even when he was trailing someone close to the finish (like Myles Bryant in the shots below), he always made a late push after the leader let up and either finished first or made it close.

Not a huge deal from an on-the-field perspective, but I really liked that he was
setting that type of example.

Mac is in his third year, maybe he's the one who should be more cognizant of the media and start giving bullshit non-answers instead of making it a point to consistently talk about stuff in terms of how it relates to last year. Tom was a much higher profile player and managed to keep his press conferences from turning into talk radio fodder for about 20 years. If he can do it, so can Mac.

Not his responsibility. If Felger and Mazz want to take his comments out of context, they will do so no matter how Mac answers.

Nah, it very much is his responsibility and there's no single person dead or alive who would agree with me on that more than one Bill Belichick. I guess I just don't understand why he has to specifically bring up last season and just pretty much openly state it was challenging to their relationship.

He was answering a question. If you read the full answer, you will see there is nothing wrong with his answer. Again, the media reaction is not his problem, and Bill would agree.

Slow start for the offense

Jones went 6-for-14 on throws on Thursday, including at least three “sacks” during 11v11s. Zappe went 10-for-15, with all of his reps against the second-team defense.

It’s been a slow start for New England’s offense out of the gate, with the first-team defense not giving up much during red-zone reps.

Aren't they strictly doing red zone, with no running game? I mean, it's kinda tough to read anything into that.

Until the pads come on, the practices are fun but essentially meaningless when it comes to learning much of anything about the team. N'Keal Harry always looked great this time of year.

Generally agree. I think you can learn a little about what the coaches think from player utilization. LIke really interesting to me that Douglas seems to be getting a decent amount of reps--that suggests he's picking up the offense and showing well in the practices and meetings and might be a keeper.

They have an actual OC now and the reports aren't of complete incompetence on the offensive side of the ball as they were last year, but listening to Patriots Unfiltered live from all three practices it's very clear guys just haven't been able to generate separation. I'm obviously not worried yet and this defense is pretty good, but in 2021 the offense had good days and they haven't had one yet.

One thing Lazar and some others have said is that it is noticeably "cleaner". That the issues are simply execution, which should get better as the offense gets acclimated. Last year, there was that and a lot of disorganization on the offense.

I doubt the offense is that good this year and this is nitpicky of me but separation is so overrated. I think the PFW guys-and many fans-tends to have a pretty narrow idea of what separation means (Perillo is essentially talking about outside guys cleanly beating their men downfield with speed). Especially with Parker and Henry you’re not going to get that-theyre decent players who get contested balls pretty well but they aren’t blowing th doors off people. in any event there’s a lot of ways you do get separation through play design play calling, players learning to make adjustments and developing precise timing
