Regardless of which team and accomplishment - "But, shouldn't they be better?"
I am guessing at some point today they did a segment on “yes they led wire to wire and never trailed but if Butler hit the 3 that wouldn’t have mattered!” It was a fake lead for most of it. You can’t give the Celtics credit

As someone here who listens to 98.5 more than probably anyone and I loved F&M for the first 3-4 years I turn it off at 2pm 99% of the time. It’s so bad and if you listen I don’t know how you can enjoy sports.

There’s the Howard stern type promo spot about how if you love them or hate them you can’t turn it off. Nope. I turned it off 7 years ago. I’m the exception since they pull massive ratings they’ll never stop.

Turned on the show for the first couple minutes Felger (to his credit working on a holiday) "Was the win about the Celtics or more about Butler going for a 3 to win vs 2pts to tie the game?" and "Would this have been the greatest collapse in Celtics history if they lost?"

/turns off radio.
They should have led for more than 47:09, what chumps

I'll never forget the morning after the Red Sox beat the Yankees in game 7 of the 2004 ALCS. Greatest Red Sox victory of my life time. I turned on Dennis & Callahan on WEEI and instead of celebrating the win they were spending all their time blasting Terry Francona for leaving Pedro in the game too long.

I made it through the first hour of the show yesterday and this was a very similar feeling. While this win wasn't as important as that Red Sox win, it is the Celtics' biggest win for at least the last 12 years, going back to the early days of the Sports Hub and Felger and Mazz. If you want to spend 5 minutes saying how Marcus Smart shouldn't have made all the shot attempts to finish the game, fine, but spending 99% of the show blasting the Celtics for that and acting as if they lost the game is insane. It's as if they don't want us to ever exert any joy out of life.

But that's their angle, always looking for the negative, never focusing on the positive, Felger has said it 9,000 times, "We're not pom pom waving cheerleaders, if you want that sort of show, tune in at 10:00am"...............

They go way, way out of their way to be negative and not come across as fans.

Plus he's a Bucks fan, so he's torqued off they lost to the Celtics.

Not to mention they love to shit on the green teamers, so if you or anyone else is looking for them to focus on the positive, it's not going to happen.

Ever.

But that's their angle, always looking for the negative...
Social media companies figured this out years ago with their algorithms, and sports radio more or less stumbled on it 25 years ago: nothing drives engagement like negativity. For every call they might generate with "aren't the Celtics great for making it to the Finals, let us know if you agree," they're going to get 25 calls angrily reacting to "the Celtics got lucky and don't deserve to be there". With the ratings they're generating with negativity, why would they change even if they wanted to be positive and happy?

Unfortunately that's accurate, however that's why they need someone like Beetle in the third chair to kind of balance out the garbage instead of Murray who just makes everything worse.

Yes, @Red(s)HawksFan and @54thMA have bingo. If you actually like sports, and want the local teams to do well, and want to enjoy their successes, this is simply not the show to tune into. Ever. And you won't be missing anything. I'm about 2 years into no longer listening/watching them. It's like I never listened. They added nothing to my enjoyment of Boston sports, and not listening has driven that home. It's a pity Boston never had a show like Mike and the Mad Dog in it's heyday, but here we are. It either says something about the market, or the culture in general, that imbecilic trolling is the highest rated program around these parts, but it's not changing.

I used to use sports talk radio as a place to go to bask in the victories and wallow in the defeats, it was therapeutic either way, listening to like minded fans be happy with a win and be torqued off/upset over a loss.

These two bozos and their non stop negativity turned me off to the entire process; if I want to be happy about a win and be upset about a loss, I come here and read what like minded fans think, this forum has become a great place for my overall serenity and peace of mind, specifically during the whole deflategate nonsense, thanks to all the members for making this such a great place for Boston sports fans.

You want to be negative over a loss, then fine, but to continually be negative and look for negativity over wins gets to be too much, so hard pass on their show.

"Can you imagine if Butler hit that three"....................yeah; he didn't, just like Adam's last second field goals in two super bowls were good, Butler intercepted the pass, they staged the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, Clark's hit stayed on the field of play, Roberts was safe at second, Schilling pitched his ass off, as did Lowe, Ortiz hit a grand slam to win game 2 of the ALCS, they recovered from the throwing error in the 2013 WS in St. Louis and the one in Dodger stadium in 2018..........

"Marcus Smart took the last 5 shots in that game!!".............he had mostly wide open looks, he flat out missed, it happens, they won the game, focus on the positive, but nope, it's all about negativity.

These morons would have been great on Boston sports talk radio from 1967 through 2000 before the worm turned for good.

As someone who starts most posts with "I barely listen to F&M anymore" which is 100% true, I listen to maybe an hour a week, I've listened for most of today and it's been good, like old school F&M from 2010-2014 or so. I miss this show vs the last 7 years of trolling and blahhhing.

As much as he loves going after Belichick and the Patriots, he loathes the Bruins. He hates Sweeney and Neely. Neely used to have a regular weekly spot on Felger’s show and for all his faults Felger knows hockey. Felger asked a few critical questions and Neely packed up and ran, never to come back. Sweeney and Neely don’t do any public interviews anymore so when they get stuck in front of the media and struggle with the questions, he loves it.
When Sweeney gets fired it’s going to be a national holiday for Felger.

Disagree. If there was one Boston area sports team Felger actually enjoys I'd think it's the Bruins.

And Sweeney absolutely deserves to be fired over Cassidy. As discussed today there is an institutional problem with the Bruins where ownership do not appear to be involved with the team other then making sure revenue is coming in from gate sales and concessions. The Jacobs have owned the team for 50 years yet move back and forth from Buffalo and Florida and before the invention of streaming services the only way they would be to watch a game would be to visit Boston (other then the Bs playing the Sabres).
With ownership being so hands off it's too easy for the president and general manager to pass the buck on their own performances as the ones assembling the rosters to place the blame on the coach.

It's a lack of interest, not technology, that would prevent the Jacobs from watching the team during the 80s and 90s. The giant C Band dishes predated digital satellite during the 80s. I'm sure they had enough property on their family's compound to put up with the eye sore of a dish if they wanted to watch their team. DSS was widely available by the mid 90s.

As an upside, if there's anything positive about the C's likely losing this series it'll put a headlight on Felger's insta-reaction stupidity.

The number of times I’ve turned on 98.5 the last 3 months only to find them having a meltdown about Belichick hiring Patricia and Judge is honestly wild. You’d think it’s the biggest sports story in New England.

Was listening about a month ago and Felger comes in with how the Sox should absolutely not be selling at the trade deadline as they're still a maybe playoff team and get to the playoffs and anything can happen. Jim Murray, who I don't normally care for as he's a giant man child, retorts that of course the Sox should be selling. Felger counters that you should never be selling in this market and Murray just yells at him on air that "that's b.s. this team stinks and the only reason you care is that a terrible Sox team with nothing else to talk about will mean bad ratings". - It was a remarkable moment, Felger was immediately caught off guard "uhh ahh ok, but that's not uhh ahh true" and Murray definitely realized he made a mistake. Guessing he got an earful during the next break.

One of the perks of retirement was the elimination of "drive home time". Probably tune in 5% of the time compared to those days.

Trenni’s a good facilitator on NBCSB, but she always wants the player who is NOT on the Boston/New England team in place of the established player ON the Boston/New England team. She would easily get sucked into the vortex of “bash everything” on F&M and just turn into another “You’re right, Mike” sycophant. Pass.

In fairness, that probably is the biggest sports story in New England right now. It's probably the biggest story with the biggest team in town, the Red Sox are a .500, last place in the AL East team, the Bruins have an established roster, and the only question about the Celtics is will they trade for Durant, which you can only talk about for so much.

Tom Pelissero had a report that "Mac Jones is expected to play today".

The first half hour (so far) they are parsing over "WHY DOES IT SAY HE'S EXPECTED "TO PLAY" AND NOT "TO START"

Any other human in the world would listen to the report and say "oh he's starting". Not them though.

I'm half waiting for them to start screaming "why didn't they say he's expected to play QB? Are Patricia and Judge lining him up at WR this week? Why is Bill allowing this?!"

What exactly does Felger want us to do, as Red Sox fans, when the Yankees are eliminated? Congratulate them on a good year? What planet is he living on? We celebrate YED. It’s called being a fan and rooting against your rivals. A tale as old as time.

How these two idiots continue to draw such big ratings is beyond me. Professional trolls.

Mazz is not exactly wrong about this. When both the Yanks and Sox are good, it’s fun. Watching two good teams slug it out with each other is the best.

I obviously don’t want the Yanks to win, but when both teams are good; the baseball is usually terrific.

Except Mazz didn't say that (using the posted quote). It's almost literally a bad thing about 99.4% of the time when your rival wins

Agreed that it's better viewing/following when both teams are good. That doesn't mean that it's ever a good thing when the Yankees win though. Whether the Yankees win or not has absolutely no bearing on the fact that the Red Sox finished last this year. The fix isn't the Yankees winning, it's the Sox doing better.

Fuck no, it's not good when the Yankees win. If the Sox suck, I'd like the Yanks to suck a little bit more. That's not what I'm saying, and maybe I misread what Mazz said (I didn't listen to the segment). I was inferring that if he thought that it would be better for the Sox if the Yanks win, that the Sox would also be winning.

I've tuned out to this show a long time ago, better off for it.

I like to watch BST on cable (channel 52 where I am, same channel that carries the Celtics games), it's on at 10:00PM, featuring co hosts Michael Holley...........................and fucking Felger, ie, "Mr Negativity."

I tune in and out, specifically when he starts shitting on the home teams, but last night before I did, I'm subjected to this exchange;

Holley "So Mike the Bruins are 10-1, great start, you must be happy, right?"
Felger "Nope, I've seen this before, they are peaking way too early, bounced from the playoffs in the first round if this keeps up, not a fan of peaking too early."

As opposed to this if the Bruins started 1-10;

Holley "So Mike the Bruins are 1-10, bad start, you must be upset, right?"
Felger; "Yup, this is what happens when you fire your coach, a guy that got you to the Stanley Cup finals and made the playoffs year after year, the season will be over before it starts if this keeps up, not a fan of slow starts."

Pitino was right, "The fellowship of the miserable."
