I've tuned out to this show a long time ago, better off for it.

I like to watch BST on cable (channel 52 where I am, same channel that carries the Celtics games), it's on at 10:00PM, featuring co hosts Michael Holley...........................and fucking Felger, ie, "Mr Negativity."

I tune in and out, specifically when he starts shitting on the home teams, but last night before I did, I'm subjected to this exchange;

Holley "So Mike the Bruins are 10-1, great start, you must be happy, right?"
Felger "Nope, I've seen this before, they are peaking way too early, bounced from the playoffs in the first round if this keeps up, not a fan of peaking too early."

As opposed to this if the Bruins started 1-10;

Holley "So Mike the Bruins are 1-10, bad start, you must be upset, right?"
Felger; "Yup, this is what happens when you fire your coach, a guy that got you to the Stanley Cup finals and made the playoffs year after year, the season will be over before it starts if this keeps up, not a fan of slow starts."

Pitino was right, "The fellowship of the miserable."

I turned my TV on and it was on F&M from the C's game, I've listened to them a few times due to this and they are awful. Today though it is Ted Johnson another guy I don't know. I knew Ted was doing this stuff, but I've never actually heard him on any shows. He is actually quite good, at least from what I just watched for 10 minutes. The other guy is an idiot liked you'd expect, while Ted was making a very interesting point on some of Judon's sacks this moron kept basically calling him a Judon hater, talking over him while Ted was trying to explain his point. I don't know how Ted didn't knock his ass out.

That’s your introduction to The Dark Knight Adam Jones. Yesterday Jones wanted the NHL to takeaway Bergeron’s 1000th point.
It would be so interesting to see the number/rating drop from when Jones hosts the morning, mid-day, or afternoon shows. It doesn't take me more than one second to change the channel or station when he is on any of them. He is so bad at what he tries to do. It's not even entertaining.

Ted has improved after his start where he was literally almost murdered by Vince Wilfork for taking about how ugly his wife was on the air (Vince was still playing then and not on air). He absolutely hates the Patriots, as evidenced by the book The Dynasty, and always tries to crap on BB, the medical staff, and the defense whenever he can. However he does it in a better way than Adam Jones who is always negative because he gives stats and reasons why.

I remember tuning in to Jones on the day Arkcand got let go. Said if you looked at the ratings over the summer the show crushed it and he (Jones) was in large part not there (filling in for all the daytime hosts on vk). That Christian had carried the show by himself during that time. It was a nice tribute to his friend.

Since he is their #1 go to guy to fill in for the regulars, I'd guess the drop off isn't as much as you'd think.

Jones tweeted his filling in for Mazz today.

For those keeping score, that means Felger, Jones and Jim Murray today

Jones says the end of that game was the happiest his 4 and a half year old son has ever seen him.
What a complete and utter shithead, I'm sure the people who for whatever reason still listen to sports talk radio must be thrilled with him being an asshole.

I'm sure the higher ups at the Patriots flagship radio network LOVED that take.

Seriously, why does he have a job there ? You mean to tell me if it was Keefe, Arcand, hell Leroy Irvin or Joe Murray that the ratings would take that much of a hit ?

What I don't get is Patriots fans are equally upset and embarrassed over that ending yesterday, then this shithead on BOSTON sports talk radio comes up with "The end of that game was the happiest my 4 and a half year old son has ever seen me."

Is he going for laughs or trying to show the audience what a complete and total assclown he is?

Just what Patriots fans need; getting their faces rubbed in it.

I swear the Boston sports media is giddy over how the Patriots have cratered.

It defies logic.

It defies logic.
To achieve good ratings the team has to be either lovable or hatable.

Being middle of the road average is just boring.
Considering what a shit show last night's game was I'd guarantee their ratings today were through the roof.

Having said that I was genuinely surprised to listen to the sports vulture go on about how happy the Pats shit show made him. Get he is the sports vulture but that is such a weird flex, openly rooting against the local teams.

Does Jones have analogs in other markets? The only other sports radio market I have familiarity with is NY, especially WFAN. Back in his WFAN days, Mad Dog Russo danced on the Yankees grave whenever the opportunity presented itself, but he was actually pretty fair to the local teams and wasn’t, and didn’t purport to be, a NY sports fan.

Understood and I agree completely; them being a 8-9/9-8 team gives sports talk radio no juice.

Openly being gleeful over that disaster last night is a piss poor look.

In a weird way I was kind of looking forward to Felger today. I figured it'd be funny, and I find Felger's trolling to be a bit everyone's in on. Heard 2 words out of Jones' mouth and immediately switched to a podcast.

Jones and Felger have very similar takes. It's their thing. Felger is the less shitier fast food option compared to Jones.

I listened yesterday as I got home and did some yard work. I actually thought Felger's takes on the Patriots were spot on and not over the top at all. He had a measured take on the bonehead play to end the game and the criticisms of the team were legitimate and fair. His point about the series of downs at the goal line that resulted in a FG rather than the final play being the microcosm of the season was absolutely correct. I actually think Felger has been a lot better lately when it comes to the trolling and such.

I maintain that Felger is actually really good at his job. Every once in awhile he has a bad day at the office or gets something stuck in his craw, but for the most part he's usually, if not spot on, right around the target. Not only that but he really understands what makes New England fans tick. He zigs when we think he's going to zag and sometimes that's frustrating, but it also makes for listenable radio/TV (as long as he has someone there to push back on him every once in awhile).

Jones is a dolt. He's a hot take machine and not a particularly original one. He's just doing Mike Felger cosplaying in the evenings and it's really pretty pathetic. He has all of this time to develop his own personality and his own opinions and he's just ripping off the guy who was sitting in his seat for four hours before him? That's absolutely lame.

I can not stand Adam Jones. He is not very knowledgeable about sports, manufactures negative takes and parrots them as contrarian views, and is not at all entertaining. I can not for the life of me understand the appeal of him that management supposedly has. To can Christian Arcand over Jones was a joke. Arcand has more talent in his left pinky finger than Jones does total.

This is spot on I haven’t listened regularly in like a decade but still check in now and then and regularly hear the takes from some of my friends who worship Felger still. My problem with Felger and Mazz sucking is mostly on Mazz and his “you’re absolutely right Mike” persona. If there was someone like Holley or Beetle from the early days of the show pushing back a little on Felger it would make it a great show. I don’t need a pompom waver or anything but hearing both hosts just rip into all the local teams and making me feel dumb for liking them for 4 hours a day got exhausting

Felger is really good at what he does and has a charisma that Jones desperately lacks but I got sick and tired of feeling so negative about sports during a time when Boston teams were thriving for the most part.

Felger was insufferable when the Patriots were great, now that they aren't I generally think he's a lot more measured and reasonable in his criticism. I tuned in this week expecting him to be apoplectic over the Raiders game and found his reaction pretty subdued in contrast to my expectations.

Generally speaking, I’ve always had two beefs with Felger:
1. I think he’s too intelligent to be as contrived as he is. The majority of his takes are insincere (i.e. he knows better than to shovel that shit) and are the result of straw man arguments (“You people”). I get that this is the talk radio game and that people take the bait, but it’s lowest common denominator stuff.
2. He pounds and pounds and pounds a take beyond what should reasonably be expected. The fact he STILL prioritizes TB12 takes over everything else makes me bananas. Enough. I don’t care anymore. Cap is crap. Enough. I don’t care anymore. Celtics fans are entitled brats and your championships were earned when there were only eight teams. Enough. I don’t care anymore. Just… fucking stop!

Mazz is an unprepared clown who overreacts to virtually everything. Yawn.

Jim Murray and Jones don’t grate on my nerves as much because I think they’re each genuine in their own way; Murray is a dysthymic pseudo-hipster who reacts based on emotion, and Jones is just an intentionally smarmy shit stirrer. I don’t think either are playing a character… that’s just the way they are.

See Felger knows what works and gets the ratings. All the stuff you complained about make them a top radio show in the country.

He's openly admitted he hated talking about Deflategate for 2 years but he HAD TO because the shows where they were all Deflategate they had higher ratings. He said they could break down ratings by segments and the ones based solely on DG did better

I remember several years ago after a crushing loss in the playoffs I dreaded turning on the post game show but he was great-comforting, reasonable, even kind of uplifting about the future. I wish more of that came through day to day instead of the relentless negativity.

I remember when Felger first rose to fame he was interviewed by someone from a local rag like Boston Magazine (forget exactly) and in the interview he talked about keeping a notebook and during each show would keep a log of what topics they discussed and when, then would compare them to the daily ratings to see what was working and what didn't and would adjust accordingly. Struck me as quite remarkable at the time.

And for whatever it's worth, while he insists on not using social media I feel like he has to have a secret Twitter account because he has this uncanny ability to stick his finger in the air to measure fan outrage when it's overwhelmingly slanted in one direction and then the next day come with a hot take about how whatever incident that caused the outrage was a much lesser issue then something else.

He could just be speaking to one of the station's producers. Stewart is pretty active online.

When they first started and he was a legit breathe of fresh air (and even somewhat recently), one of their tenants was that they would never criticize player/coach/team/executive for something that hasn't happened yet. No idle speculation. And they kept to it! They called each other out on it, called the callers out too. Whenever I listen to it now (usually 30-40 minutes a week) there is always a quote or a tease for an upcoming quote and then they speculate on the meaning of the quote. That meaning then becomes gospel for their conversation. The last 4-5 years have been utterly disappointing for the best sports radio market in the nation (save for T & R, of course).

Wow. Jones is “immediate channel change” for me, and probably a lot of people. This seems like an awful move.
