Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

I was worried that I was going to hate this show but it has replaced "The Big Show" as my go to show in the afternoon/evening.

I haven't listened to The Big Show for that 5 minutes in the last week and a half and I believe I am smarter for it.

Today's interview with Francona a few minutes ago was great, Felger had no problem asking Francona about Tek and the lineup, and while Francona took him to the woodshed, it was a great question and answer that many of us here have asked.

Glad so many people have started to come around on Felger. Been a fan of his for awhile now.

It's great to listen to a sports radio host that consistently refuses to take himself seriously, yet manages to still have strong opinions.

I agree totally.

I have been a Felger fan for a while, but I'm really surprised at how much better I like Mazz than I thought I would.

I think it's because on "The Big Show," everybody has to play a character. And Massarotti's character was the unbearable, high-pitched complainer. It's just the character he got stuck with.

I am thankful for this alternative, especially on days like this. I flipped it over to EEI during a commercial break, and Smerlas is on today. Thank God for Felger and Mazz.

Mazz brings nothing to the table, either in print or on the radio. His next thought provoking, original comment will be his first.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I like them both. I always have.

But then again, I can't stand Dale Arnold and Michael Holley, especially Dale Arnold, while most everybody likes them. Shows what I know.

Listening at work and responding to a caller I think they just mentioned that Javier Lopez is on the 40-man roster and should have been brought up 9/1. I enjoy their new show but they should realize Lopez is not on the 40-man roster.

Do my ears deceive me? Am I actually hearing intelligent Bruins talk on a Boston sports radio station? I think I'm really going to enjoy this show during the hockey season.

It been nice. There has been a lot of Bruins calls. I'm surprised no one brought up the injuries at the end of the season.

One caller did, and there "flash guy", who is very knowledgeable on hockey, was talking about the injuries. Felger doesn't want anyone to use injuries as an excuse for not beating an inferior Carolina team, which I agree with.

Damn, missed it. I was pissed we lost, but when all the injuries came out after the series it took away a lot of the sting, at least to me.

Felger is questioning whether Julien can take this team to the next level, but agrees he has earned the oppurtunity to try. He also has concerns about Thomas as a playoff goalie ( which I'm in total agreement). He feels that the team could be better with a good trade return for Kessel (which I don't agree with). The segment has been going on for a couple hours and, and there has been some good debate on these issues (and others) with the callers. The phone lines are banged out, I've been trying to get through for an hour.

Holy crap this is hilarious, the producer got locked in another room and they can't get him out. They don't know how to go to commercial break and can't take calls...

Felger and Mazz get a 25 minute interview with Theo: http://www.cbssports.com/local/boston/podc...lger-massarotti

Good stuff on trading strategy, the shortstop defense sucking before AGon, and hilarity when Felger asks if Tek knows enough Chinese to talk with Dice.

Drew stuff too, Theo awesomely tells the haters to fuck off.

I love his stuff on JD Drew. He shoots down Mazz on his low RBI claim. People bitch about him, but he's been one of my favorite players since he's been here.

Fantastic Favre ranting by Felger today. He's at his best when Favre is in the news, just tears him to pieces. Killed Gruden, too.

I am loving Mazz today. He's railing against the whole idea of Sox fans bitching about the Yankee payroll which is something I agree with.

Felger is a great foil (for lack of a better term) because I don't think that anything Felger says is an act, I think he believes everything that he says and is legitimately pissed about A-Rod getting a ring and the Packers losing yesterday.

This is a big difference between Felger and Ordway:

When Ordway is wrong, he always looks for loop-holes in his previous argument, backing off of his originally opinion. Which is easy to do, considering his opinions are littered with "caveats," so he can never be wrong.

When Felger is wrong, he admits he was wrong. He just gave a rundown of what he was wrong about, saying "I thought the Jets would be good, they're 4-4, I thought Favre was done, and he's playing great, etc."

It's much more refreshing listening to somebody who doesn't take themselves so seriously that they can't admit they're wrong.

You are 100% wrong in my opinion. Before the show began I would have agreed with you on Mazz, I would have thought he would add nothing to any sport other than baseball. But to be perfectly honest he has been fantastic on the show with Felger. He plays off him so well and calls Felger a fraud when he doesn't believe what he is actually saying. Mazz actually helps keep Felger from going off the deep end on a lot of topics, and they disagree so much that it actually creates good discussion instead of screaming like it does on the Big Show.

I totally agree. You can tell that Mazz has spent a lot of time "brushing up" on the other major sports.

And I also agree that Felger and Mazz have very good chemistry with the whole crew. I like how the producer and the sports update guy interact with them on a regular basis, and actually add something to the conversation.

Edit: One more thing, as you mentioned, Mazz is a great foil to Felger. As proven towards the tail end of his 890 days, when Felger doesn't have a co-host, he can go "off the deep end" and involve himself in irrelevant arguments. Massarotti does a good job in reeling him back in, and keeping that stuff to an acceptable level.

For example, yesterday they spent the first few segments talking about Manu Ginobili attacking a bat in San Antonio. It was entertaining for a few segments, but I wouldn't have been able to take 3 hours of it. Mazz did a nice job in changing the topic when he needed to.

I agree with this. Mazz is terrible and he might have the most annoying voice on radio outside of the Catfish. Felger is good enough to carry the show and it's still better than The Big Show. I am a fan of Tom (E.) Curran and Sean McAdam and would have prefered either of them to Mazz. I just have zero interest in anything he has to say and I don't think he really believes half the shit he says.

You don't believe that Mazz believes half the shit he says? That's funny because I am pretty sure it should be Felger that you should be concerned about believing what he is saying. Felger is completely over the top on some of the stuff he says and I don't actually think he believes some of it. That goes for any radio host though, most of the time they are saying shit they may not actually believe to create interest in a topic.

All that said though I agree with you on McAdam, I was actually discussing in the sports hub thread of how they could improve the midday show, and having him on it would be a good idea, as long as he brushed up on his other sports besides basbeall before hand.

I completely disagree. I like Mazz very much even though I don't always agree with his point of view. He and Felgy are great together, although I think Felgy could do the show by himself and I don't think Mazz could do the same.

I can't listen to Mazz for too long. Even when I might agree with what he says, he annoys me. He just comes across as pretty ignorant, half hearted, a little condescending and whiny. Felger can be the same. They both throw crap out there for the sake of argument with little knowledge to back it up. For some reason I don't find Felger as annoying.

Felger with a McAdam or Curran or someone with a more reasoned voice would make for a good radio show. Felger and Mazz together and I usually last for 10 minutes max.

I have typically been a Felger and Mazz guy since they started in August and haven't listened to the Big Show much since. However
it is apparent that neither Felger nor Mazz care too much for the NBA, so on days when the Celtics are the hot topic, it will probably be worthwhile tuning in to Ordway instead.

Also, the fact that both Felger and Mazz have been indulging every caller who starts ripping the Red Sox for having not gotten Texeira last offseason is getting real annoying. Especially since they seem to be pushing the angle that the Sox need to prove they are willing to go after big names, which is total nonsense. The Sox had a hard on for Texeira and didn't get him because the Yankees were prepared to outbid them, and Texeira apparently wanted them more. Period. The fact that Texeira slobbered in his first press conference about dreaming of being a Yankee ever since he was a kid should have been enough to turn off Sox fans. On this issue, Mazz has been dissapointing.

But if Glenn has Smerlas and Burton on? Or Stearns and Burt? Or DeOssie and Larry Johnson? Or any combination of that group?

I would agree with you if there weren't lousy co-hosts on "The Big Show" 80% of the time. Again, it's another example where the show's format shoots itself in the foot.

I tend to like Felger, but every so often he latches on to something and simply refuses to let it go. I'm especially thinking of, I'm not sure the exact day, but I believe it was last Tuesday, and he would not. shut. up about the Celtics in the playoffs last year, saying that they rolled over and gave up, and how stupid and sychophantic (he is a big fan of that word) fans were for saying that they ran out of gas at the end. When he first started talking about it, I find myself if not necessarily agreeing, at least I could see his side and acknowledge that he had a point. However by the end, he was so aggressively dogmatic that I find myself disagreeing with everything he said out of spite. Still, overall I'm a fan of the show. I don't always agree with what they say (rooting for the Yankees Tony? Really?) but in general, it's a refreshing change of pace from so much of EEI.

Totally separate topic, but does anyone know offhand, or know where I can find how 98.5 is doing against EEI, and specifically how they are doing compared to previous attempts to get a rival sports station going?

For general information as to how they are doing, look in the "slaying the dragon" thread. As to the specific question, I am sure someone on here has the old 1510 arbitron numbers stored somewhere.

Welcome to the site Jums. In general I agree with you regarding Felger, most days he's great but every now and then he'll get something stuck in his craw, like the day you mentioned, and he can get annoying. But that doesn't happen too often so I can deal with it.

I did. I thought it was great. And he's right. These guys are so much more refreshing than those eegits on the Big Show on Thursdays, Fridays, and Mondays. Although, Tom Carron (sp) was pretty good the other day. I listened for just a little during TSH commercial breaks.

Simmons said he doesn't want to give the Big Show ratings. Felger is giving him a hard time, and that he should have just done it.

Simmons ripping Ordway, saying it's all orchestrated WWE style bullshit, and he doesn't want to be a part of it, even less so considering he'd give them ratings.

EDIT: Felger saying "he hasn't done himself any favors". Simmons replying with "Why?". Felger seems to be douche about it.

Simmons saying the Big Show is telling lies about it all.

He's actually helping The Big Show, I can't wait to flip over to WEEI after this is over to hear Ordway's reponse. I wouldn't have changed the station otherwise.

I think Simmons thought he would be really embraced with the call to F and Mazz but he actually came off extremely thin skinned. Felger kind of threw him under the bus. That said, I enjoyed the shots he took at Ordway. "I give Ordway credit for setting up the show perfectly. You should never have a flash guy who could possibly take your job some day. There's no chance of that with Shepherd". Pretty funny.

While I understand what he is trying to do here, the way he went about it will probably help WEEI, at least for today, since people are going to want to listen to how they react to this news.
