The 49ers signed Tyms as a nobody UFA after watching his 2012 pro day at Fla A&M--and it's easy to see why: at 6'3" a 39" vertical is rare (Randy 39" at his Marshall pro day 1998), 4.4 speed is excellent (true, Randy's faster), and a 3.93) sec 20 yd shuttle unheard of.
He benched 22 reps--a lot for a WR. So his combination of strength, speed, agility, and vertical reach is extraordinary. By comparison, Dobson was impressive at his pro day with the same size (6'3" 200 to Tyms 6'3" 204) and speed, but had a 35" vertical and a slower
3-cone (7.19 vs. 6.93) while benching 16 reps. Measurables aren't everything, but we saw some maybe not so surprising results--separation, fending off hand-checks...and he can catch. Oh, ye of little faith....
