Jack Leiter joins his uncle’s former team? No, this was evidently disciplinary. I'm sure the Mets will do well if it goes through though.

Verlander is atop my wish list. He’s dealing. What did they give up? I’d kick the tires on Verlander
That would be interesting, the one that would be even better is if they sent Kumar Rocker, who has now had his TJS (two months in), back.Jack Leiter joins his uncle’s former team?
This is just the very start of their window though. They graduated the #1 prospect in baseball (FV 65 on fangraphs) this year, have the current #1 prospect in baseball (FV 60) with an ETA of 2024, and are in the right half of farm rankings. Granted the AL East is absolutely stacked with 3 teams in the top 10 per fangraphs, so no team has a clear path for victory. Baltimore should absolutely be contending for years barring some very unlikely outcomes.I was trying to make the opposite point -- if the aren't buyers at the deadline, there's a serious risk of reversion, and they'll blow their only open window.
Yeah, I haven't looked at it super closely, but I'm pretty sure that if you let MLB GMs select right now from the 30 current organizations personnel-wise, MLB and minors combined, ATL would be consensus 1st but BAL would be 2nd. An endless flow of stud position players and a pitching factory that keeps turning career mediocrities into solid contributors It seems pretty clear now that Bloom is doing a pretty good job but Elias got hired one year earlier and has been on fire ever since. There are bigger windows in submarines than there are in the AL East these days. This is just the very start of their window though. Rangers really need pitching right now. Their offense can't carry them anymore.
They are getting assets for guys who cost nothing but money, which they can redeploy in the off-season. Disappointing season, but these moves make sense.I'm somewhat amazed that the Mets are actually selling. If people want to see a team either without a plan or with a bad one, look in Queens.
I think these moves make more sense than the original signings. You're right though, maybe that is a plan. Spend huge, sell off if it isn't working, and then spend huge again next off-season. I guess it's just not one that I particularly like. They are getting assets for guys who cost nothing but money, which they can redeploy in the off-season. Gotcha. Sounds like we’re on the same page.I was trying to make the opposite point -- if the aren't buyers at the deadline, there's a serious risk of reversion, and they'll blow their only open window.
Clearly what they have done in the recent past doesn't look good.I'm somewhat amazed that the Mets are actually selling. If people want to see a team either without a plan or with a bad one, look in Queens.
It really depends on the price. If they make an offer sweet enough, like, if the Rangers offer up Luisangel Acuna and the Phillies will send us Justin Crawford, I take those trades and roll the dice or even make a small, lesser addition to partially offset. Everything has a price.Supposedly, the Rangers are in SF to scout Paxton and the Phillies are there to scout Duvall. Can’t see either of them being moved.
But do you have any doubt that they're going to do that again in the off-season?I feel differently. The fact that the Mets are selling right now is a sign that the ownership is doing a better job than they have in the past. 3 years ago they would have done nothing and tried to improve with another shitty FA signing.
I mean, Cohen went and purchased the best available players and it didn't work out, now they are getting as much value as they can for what they have (so far). They'll have to learn the lesson that the Yankees learned and forgot then learned again about buying wins, but the Mets plan, from my perspective, to pay out the nose for free agents while building up the farm is a good one. Particularly when money doesn't matter to the owner. But do you have any doubt that they're going to do that again in the off-season?
I guess the difference is that they'll do that with a few more lottery tickets in their system, which is something.
The Mets actually have a pretty decent young crop of hitters perculating in the low minors. Kevin Parada, Jett Williams, Alex Ramirez, Jacob Reimer, Jesus Baez, Marco Vargas, Colin Houck...that's some tasty up the middle talents along with a few potential power bats. Do not sleep on the Mets. They are showing some real ability to identify and develop hitters.Clearly what they have done in the recent past doesn't look good.
But as far as the here and now, seems to me selling what they can is clearly a more logical plan moving forward than staying put.
Was a but surprised they wanted Rookie Ball lotto tickets for Robertson rather than prospects a little closer to the majors.
I would be surprised ifthe Mete weren't pitching in $. That moght not matter to Cohen but it would matter to other owners who might try this.Actually this is a good strategy for the Mets PR and their particular situation. Win the offseason headlines with statement moves in the FA period, then pay a half year's salary and abort mission to get young assets if it doesn't work. Any big market team that does this year-to-year cycle is bound to win a title within 5-10 years with whatever current crop of FAs and/or the young players they get via trade.
Was just writing something similar, this seems borderline bannable by Manfred. So Mets are paying a Moncada-like 30m+ in money for this prospect. I assume Scherzer guaranteed his 2024.
Prorated 43.33M (3 year, 130M contract evenly spaced) for this year, assuming about 1/3 of the season left by time, 43.33M next yearJeez. Considering the Mets are in the highest bracket, they are paying a shitload of money for Acuna. I know Cohen doesn't care, but what is it, $86m they pay to not have Scherzer on the team next year?
Yes, but it still hits their AAV, so...some more math.Prorated 43.33M (3 year, 130M contract evenly spaced) for this year, assuming about 1/3 of the season left by time, 43.33M next year
So Scherzer is roughly owed 57-58M (43.33 * 4/3), Mets pay it down to 22.5M. I guess actually about 35M from Mets is the result.
Fair point, usually a new owner is good for several years of irresponsible spending in the interest of an immediate championship before reality sets in. See Ballmer, Steve.I would be surprised ifthe Mete weren't pitching in $. That moght not matter to Cohen but it would matter to other owners who might try this.
The ESPN article is like, “and the potential for him to opt out of the final year of his contract following this season.” I know the money being tossed around in FA is insane, but is there any chance Scherzer opts out of a 1-year $43.3M deal?Mets are smart to get out of that Scherzer deal for next year. 4.73 FIP. He’s 38. Maybe the rangers can get something out of him, but who knows.
Was wondering about this. On the other hand, these are the types of deals that could become more common with this humongous contractsWas just writing something similar, this seems borderline bannable by Manfred.
Do have some cost-controlled players like Jung and Heim, though.Rangers are at about $180M for next year for just Scherzer, deGrom, Gray, Seager, Semien, Eovaldi, and Heaney.
DeGrom Scherzer Eovaldi is pretty good 1-2-3 in the playoffs if healthy and they can certainly scoreRangers are at about $180M for next year for just Scherzer, deGrom, Gray, Seager, Semien, Eovaldi, and Heaney.
Probably around $25M less factoring in the money coming from the Mets with Scherzer.Rangers are at about $180M for next year for just Scherzer, deGrom, Gray, Seager, Semien, Eovaldi, and Heaney.
Good point.Probably around $25M less factoring in the money coming from the Mets with Scherzer.
