There are some real fatalists on here. Why all the talk of Story potentially being out for the season when there hasn’t even been a diagnosis? There hasn’t even been a roster move or an update. Can’t we wait a few hours until we hear anything concrete?

You new?

Being fatalistic and overreacting without all the info is what we do around here. :D

While we don't know the extent of the injury I think it's more than fair to say that Story's going on the IL and while there hasn't been an official roster change Hamilton is expected to join the team in Anaheim. I think that it's fair to discuss the team's options.

…laughing at this, and I’m not that new. It just always surprises me that people fear for the worst like it’s still 2003.
So you are saying amputation is not the most likely?

I sort of think the issue here is how much pain he was in and the idea that professional athletes don’t overreact about that stuff.

If story is out for the season, our chances of making the post season are pretty close to zero so we should make decisions with a long term future involved. That might mean leaving Rafaela in a familiar position as he transitions to the majors.
Do we really think the loss of Story dramatically impacts the teams playoff odds? I’d like to see the math on that.

fair enough, but discussing the teams options is far different than assuming he’s out for the season. In addition, we pretty much know he isn’t playing tonight or tmrw, so it’d be malpractice to leave ourselves short by not having someone in place on the same coast in case of another injury to, say, Reyes tonight.

My guess and it's only a guess is that Story goes on the IL before tonight's game and Hamilton is activated. From what I recall as soon as Story hit the ground he was rolling around in pain like he'd been shot and Devers winced and looked away before signaling for assistance. Honestly I think it's only natural that the discussion would include both long and short term options.

Most definitely. But to say the Red Sox don’t have the results seems implausible.
We all have home workstations and plenty of the time we get a heads up from a team doc about a player on the way for a scan. But on a Saturday, it's not like we typically spend our entire day waiting at home to make sure we read it within minutes. This isn't a "code stroke" or something.

Additionally, if the scan was scheduled for 4 pm PST, it probably ended around 4:30 pm. Assuming he was on time (athletes are often on their own schedule).

So it's quite plausible they don't know much yet.

Story is projected by Fangraphs as a 2 win player. Hes got a 681 ops as a member of the Sox. Not ideal to lose him, but there’s just no way this changes the Sox from contender to not. They can deal with this:

Most who have considered the Sox a contender, have thought Story being healthy and hitting like he did before joining the Sox was one of the keys. What he has hit as injured player during his time with the Sox isn't really relevant.

Yeah, the Sox being a contender hope includes hitting on several best case scenarios for players. Getting some worst case scenarios early on is not helpful.

I think what a lot of us are concerned about is that this team is potentially a house of cards that could fall without a good defensive shortstop. If Story isn't replaced with a quality defensive shortstop, suddenly there are extra outs every game, starters can't get those 5+ inning outings as frequently, the bullpen will have to work more...and when it gets to the stretch run of the season we don't have obvious depth to avoid a repeat of last year's shitshow.

I like this team and I think this could be an enjoyable season, but if this team ends up with a mediocre (or worse) SS for an extended period, this becomes a much less enjoyable team to follow. So it doesn't have to be Story, but this team in particular needs a legit SS.

Ok sure- but do you think his loss turns the team from a contender to not? That claim doesn’t make much sense, unless someone has some insanely unrealistic projection.

Miami (oh, Miami!)

For me it was more his anchoring the IF as a plus defender, and bringing a credible RHH bat - which'd be his slightly downgraded late CO and early BOS years. As opposed to prime COL Story, which'd have been awesome. If Story's out for the year, that might still happen with a Story replacement and Grissom over Valdez as the regular 2B.

I think a lot has to go right for them to be a contender. Solidifying the D is critical, and he was the key to that. Getting some RH thump in the lineup is critical, and he was/is one of the keys to that. So I guess it depends on who would replace him, but I don't see any internal options having the potential to help the way he could.

Watching NESN pre-game show. Game starts in less than an hour and still no roster move regarding Story. Hamilton simply standing by on Taxi Squad. Let’s relax and not panic yet. As bad as it looked, this could still simply be a short term thing. Deep breaths and relaxing exercises are called for right now, not panic.

10 day IL with left shoulder injury. No tears, no structural damage is what I believe their initial diagnosis was.

The loss would sting defensively but let’s face it, he’s just not a good hitter anymore. Must be a defense-oriented no hit guy out there somewhere for cheap via trade who could be plugged into the 9 slot.

I hope this is accurate and your source(s) are vetted. Please provide.
im pretty sure the guys below covered it. Subluxation is a partial dislocation. Adjoining bones get pulled out of position but still touch. Sooo, no tears. Sometimes they just pop that shit back in and wait a few days to see if it feels comfortable enough to swing a bat again.

Dear NESN graphics person: the term is "subluxation" and not "sublaxation."

Sure, but better if you can do it without significantly weakening your OF defense.
Exactly.

Do not eff with Rafaela’s acclimation by moving him around if they think Mayer is going to be ready in 2025 (if they don’t, it’s a different calculus, admittedly).

Moving Rafaela to SS probably lessens the impact there, but also makes them much worse in CF, and much worse in LF, while also stunting Rafela’s development out in CF, all for “one season” where the team isn‘t built to contend for more than WC3 anyway…

That is why I said Iglesias, but literally any above average defensive SS will do. I chose the one that I’d have to think is dirt cheap. But go get that player, and leave Rafaela in CF, Duran in LF and go from there.

(I don’t know a thing about Gonzalez, but if he’s an above average defensive SS, that’s fine too.j

So, still a chance this will be like the time Gronk got his knee taken out and writhed on the ground in agony, and I figured career over. He missed like three games.

Re: Romy’s defense, per Sox Prospects:

Defense: Utility man capable of playing all outfield and all infield positions. Best suited for middle infield. Average to better defender. Solid instincts and baseball IQ.”

https://www.soxprospects.com/players/gonzalez-romy.htm

as I believe a couple others have already posted, makes a lot of sense that they’d let Romy meet them in Boston and he probably is the guy who gets the first shot while they consider other options. Pray the confidence carries over from good start at AAA and that he can get semi-hot enough that the loss doesn’t sting too bad, whatever the length.
