Vogelbach? Ugh. Not loving either option (D. Smith)
$1m this year. Option for $1.5m next. When hot, he’s great. When cold….um, yeah. Who gets better prospects sent with them, Vogey or Smith? It’s the prospects that matter more than either of them.

I doubt the presence of either impacts what kind of prospects the Sox get. Are the a Mets desperate to shed what would be a tiny amount of salary (and almost nothing with Vogelbach).

Chaim Bloom is playing the long game and will soon announce Tommy Pham and Reese McGuire are being traded for Kevin Durant. Bloom is confident an athlete like Durant can play first.

Honestly Bloom should be under a heavy microscope right now. They’re bad now and these moves aren’t doing much to prevent them from being bad in the future.

But then again, Bloom being on the hot seat would require ownership to actually care about the on-field product, but with Mookie, X, and Devers likely wearing different uniforms to end their careers because of $ there’s no real evidence that shows Henry cares all that much right now.

Looks like they discovered a new market inefficiency: public masturbators and violent fantasy football players.

Chaim is a genius.

Valdez is an interesting guy to me. Across AA and AAA this year, he's put up just under a 12% BB rate, 20% K rate and a very nice .278 ISO.

Baseball America's most recent update as of the all-star break had him as Houston's #12 prospect. This is what they had on him:

Over the last two seasons, Valdez has progressed from an aggressive contact hitter with bat speed-driven raw power to a complete hitter at the plate. He now makes contact at an above-average rate, rarely expands the zone and shows exit velocity data that would rank above-average in the major leagues. He’s a tough out that grinds out at-bats, can hit for contact and punish mistakes. While he’s progressed into a legitimate offensive prospect there are questions around his long-term defensive home. He logged time at second and third base as a professional but is likely to land at second base long term, where there will be added pressure on his bat to produce.
Edit: And I think it's important to note the K rate has improved as the year's gone on. It was 22.9% in AA, and in 173 PAs in AAA so far it's down to 16.8%. Walk rate did take a noticeable dip though, 16.6% to 6.4%.

Olney on ESPN: “ I have a lot of guys coming up to me asking me what are we doing here? Why isn’t Devers signed? Why isn’t Bogaerts signed? What direction are we going?”
I just heard him giving that report but wasn't paying full attention to it. Was he saying that in the context of fans asking those questions, or players?

Trading your starting catcher for prospects, acquiring an 88 OPS+ outfielder who's potentially a FA after this season, and not signing those two guys - along with the fact that they've played like garbage for weeks - seems to indicate they're selling. What's confusing about that?

Moreso about long-term I’d say, but they’ve got to be on edge to see what’s coming next if anything.

I'm pretty skeptical of this. Why would Red Sox players approach Buster Olney for clarity about why Devers and Bogaerts aren't signed? Only person I can possibly imagine doing this is Verdugo because he seems to say anything to anyone.

If there was ever proof that Bloom only pays attention to numbers... uh, I guess this is it. Not sure what numbers he's seeing, though.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if there's some bad blood between the coaching staff and the front office that is growing more toxic by the day. Cora can't be happy with how today has gone to this point.

lets not forget that both (Xander and Devers) said they did not want to negotiate once the season started. But ESPN (and WEEI and others) need those headlines for the sweet clicks.

That’s for sure.

Anyways, I would be nervous as a player, too. If your name isn’t Xander or Rafael, you could also be gone by this time tomorrow.

This is concerning. Everyone is confused, and who wants that?
So the players that are underperforming are confused that the FO is deciding to make trades?

The team is in last--what did they think would happen?

This is nuts. You have what evidence to back up any of those three besides Betts not being on the Sox going forward?

Most players leave their original teams. Two out of the three you list, though, are still here. Are you a pre-cog?

I'd like to think that this team isn't that collectively stupid, but I wouldn't doubt it. Maybe not play like a bunch of dickheads all season?

Great June though.

That 2018 team loaded with homegrown stars and stud additions had the Red Sox among the elite and an envy of many. So far in the rear view mirror now. What a disaster.

This lands squarely on the Smart Guys. They wanted a guy like Bloom and they got him. Meanwhile they’re still raking in the $.

Other than devers, Bogaerts JD and a very few others, the answer is "because your OPS is about 600/your ERA is infinity."

Did you miss 2019 with almost the same roster?

Right Here
Bloom isn't really sitting on a lot of marketable pieces. JDM and Eovaldi are probably going to bring the biggest haul but everything about their performance as of late screams "Buyer beware!" As much I I liked Vaz, he wasn't going to bring much, but we did get two prospects.

Diekman brought back salary relief. It's not on the scale of the Nick Punto trade, but he's off the books and we got a below average catcher who is under control for a few more years.

I have no idea what the Pham trade is all about, but a PTBNL is basically a bucket of balls.

Best case, these random moves are a build up to something else. Worst case, we've got a last place team that has no decipherable plan.

So that I can sleep tonight, I'm looking at this as if Bloom is cleaning out his garage and we're looking at everything sitting in the driveway and it looks like a mess. Let's hope by the deadline tomorrow, that he's put it all back together and that we can still find the sponges to wash the car.

the Old “prove a negative “ retort, eh?
Their best homegrown offensive player of the generation is currently playing for a different team because the owner did not want to pay him. They’re currently in a standoff with #2 and #3 on that list because of money (fact, not opinion). Sorry that distorts your rose colored glasses but this organization is not doing all it can to compete right now.
