Cops sometimes do weird things in regards to vehicular movement. I saw a clip where a driver went through an intersection after he thought a cop had waved him through, the cop thought he had held him, and as the driver went by the cop kicked the car and broke his own leg. The driver was arrested and charged with vehicular assault but the incident was captured on dashcam by another driver so charges were dropped.
Yeah, just what I was wondering. I would think getting the plate number and/or following him into to the club would be a safer option, but wasn’t sure what the protocol was for that. If he overreacted, did something reckless, and got a minor injury, then the assault charges seem like BS. The rest of them seem in line with what reportedly happened.

Darlington killing it on ESPN+. He was 2 cars behind Scottie.

The players knew about the accident but were told that they were allowed on property. Apparently a few even were waived through on the same route Scottie was on. Apparently the police officer wasn't clearly identified as a police officer. Dark, rainy and the highlighter yellow jackets don't say "police" on them, or at least not clearly. Scottie pulled into an open lane and tried to turn into the club and was told to stop. He didn't and the cop grabbed the car to some degree and Scottie continued for 15ish yards before stopping. Darlington heard Scottie say "I didn't know you were a police officer" in the aftermath.

Isn't it standard for car doors to be auto-locked when the car is being driven? I can't remember being in a modern car that doesn't auto-lock. Seems like trying the door handle is at best futile but also a risk for injury if the car is in motion.
True but it's probably a reflex to grab the handle and like you pointed out that's probably where the "second degree assault" happened.

To @cshea's point about the conditions, the video Darlington took does show it's pretty freaking dark and miserable. I'm sure there will be a statement written up by PR folks from Scottie and the PD saying there was confusion/miscommunication or something along those lines and everyone will go on their merry way.

Scottie has the opportunity to do the funniest thing this weekend.

Of course they double down with those charges and a jumpsuit mug shot rather than admitting it was all a big misunderstanding; the best defense is to go on the offensive. Obviously we're not privy to everything that occurred, but from the footage and descriptions available it sounds like a combination of confusion and overzealousness. It'll be interesting to see how this is walked back.

I'm not a big golf guy, but my perception as a very casual/occasional fan is that Scheffler is well-respected but not generally a huge fan favorite given his flat-line demeanor and seemingly robotic playing style (few spectacular moments but extremely consistent - sort of like Sampras in men's tennis back in the day). Assuming no damning new details emerge, I can see this turning him into a folk hero.

Fake edit: Now we have a damning new detail about damaged pants.

“Detective Gillis’ uniform pants, valued at approximately $80, were damaged beyond repair.”

Did he shit himself?

Standard operating procedure to escalate. Officer Powertrip could have just walked after the car, gotten the plate, tracked it down inside the golf course, probably radioed ahead because it looks like a bajillion police officers were there. It was going low speed and into a the course driveway. Where's it going to go? Instead he jumped on it? Wtf. And of course, it's not unreasonable to assume Scheffler was confused or misunderstood. But yea, jump on the car.

That police report is high comedy. Detective Ripped Pants will probably need to go on medical leave indefinitely.

Haven’t heard a ruined pants story this funny since Kramer sold out to Peterman.

Now seeing multiple headlines claiming that the officer was "hospitalized" for his injuries. The actual statements I've seen say he was "taken to the hospital" for his "abrasions." This is a real-time clinic in how law enforcement establishes a police-centered narrative for public consumption.

Thoughts and prayers for Detective Gillis and his pants.

The most insane part of this is anyone who has been to a tourney knows these guys are all given courtesy cars. Literally, there are like 100 identical cars for the players in the lots that usually have some identifying characteristic that makes it clear these are the rental/courtesy cars the players are using for the week. There is almost no chance that any cop that had been stationed there at any point during the week (practice rounds, first round yesterday) that wouldn't know it was a player and waive them through.

And to put yourself in Scotty's shoes, forget the fact that he's in tourney mode, going through a routine and likely worried about not making his tee time, etc., if one guy is waiving him through, you've got police lights going off all over the place, it's dark and some guy is trying to open your door, I'd have probably bolted until I got to a safe spot too.

I'm not in any way defending the cops here but the one who filed the complaint and was involved in the incident was almost certainly not an officer who was stationed there for the tournament. He was identified as a detective, probably on site investigating the pedestrian death. My guess is that he didn't know jack shit about the protocols near the site for the venue or the players.

I assume Rickie was waiting outside the jail like Elwood was waiting for Jake Blues.

Big mistake letting an ass guard Valhalla.

Pain, swelling and abrasions could be the medical report on me if I spend more than an hour in my garden.
See also, prom night.
