Probably could have called a foul on the Tatum dunk to tie it up for OT as well.
Sweet dunk by Tatum though

Not to speak for lovegtm, but I believe that was said with tongue firmly in cheekWait... what?
Would have faced MIA in first round instead. Not sure why that means BOS wins thoughWait... what?
Different game. Grant wasn't even with the team when Brown/Tatum went for 30 and Mitchell/LeVert went for 40.Or when Grant misses two free throws where either win the game.
Oh wow, thats right. Looks like I mixed up the dates on that Tatum dunk too. The 30/30 and 40/40 games were on October 28, the video I posted is from November 2. Maybe this year they can try to finish those games in regulation.Different game. Grant wasn't even with the team when Brown/Tatum went for 30 and Mitchell/LeVert went for 40.
We lost 3 different OT games to Cleveland last year. Yuck.
Yes lol, was meant to be a dumb sarcastic comment about the value of the NBA regular season. Not to speak for lovegtm, but I believe that was said with tongue firmly in cheek
I just finished cruising through last night's game thread where JB made a miraculous climb into, I believe, the top 6 (but not quite the starting 5), so my sarcasm meter was already finely calibratedYes lol, was meant to be a dumb sarcastic comment about the value of the NBA regular season.
He was just assigned to Maine.Any theories on Walsh's DNP last night? Seems strange they wouldn't get his feet wet in a game like that.
He's the 14th player, with a two-way guy that could jump him. I wouldn't hold my breath on him cracking the rotation.Any theories on Walsh's DNP last night? Seems strange they wouldn't get his feet wet in a game like that.
I wasn't expecting he'd crack the rotation, but with a huge lead like last night why not let the kid make his NBA debut for at least a couple minutes. I doubt he would have been any worse than the guys who did play in garbage time last night. He's the 14th player, with a two-way guy that could jump him. There is a greater chance he gets dealt than plays real minutes for Boston this season.
Development days for 2nd round 19-year-olds are over in Boston.
CJM wanted to get a look at PP, Hauser, Brissett, Banton, Kornet, Svi, and Stevens.I wasn't expecting he'd crack the rotation, but with a huge lead like last night why not let the kid make his NBA debut for at least a couple minutes. Maine is definitely the best place for him right now.
Very nice. That’s with having faced two elite defenses so far, and the Heat.
FWIW, I'm confident that Walsh will get a look later in the season. Right now CJM has two main nuts to crack (obviously beyond "stay healthy"): 1. Get a flow with the top 6 (get them used to playing with each other in various combinations), and 2. Sort out who the next 4-5 guys are. At this point it's fair to assume that PP and SH are next up, but after that it's a block of guys that includes Banton, Stevens, Brissett, Svi, and Kornet. Ideally he gets a good idea of what they can do in NBA action in games that count. Sure he has some idea already, but seeing them in real NBA games with this roster even against scrubs has value. Developmental minutes for Walsh shouldn't be on the agenda for the first couple of months at least. Let him shake off some of the Bambi effect in Maine while Joe tries to figure out what he has in the depth pieces. Depending on what he does up there and what they do in their limited chances, maybe he forces the issue.I wasn't expecting he'd crack the rotation, but with a huge lead like last night why not let the kid make his NBA debut for at least a couple minutes. I thought that comment about the Heat was a joke.If whatever we saw out of the Wizards last night was "elite defense", I'd hate to see league average, nevermind poor.
It even goes deeper than this. There is a pecking order, a depth chart, that is earned and developed. Playing a guy over someone ahead of him on the depth chart without having a very good reason to do so isn't something any coach should do. That would not be a good message to send the player sent to the doghouse for no reason.CJM wanted to get a look at PP, Hauser, Brissett, Banton, Kornet, Svi, and Stevens.
Guys fighting for #7-10 spots. Physically, Walsh is pretty far away from the WINGs in that group
I'm not confident Walsh will get any opportunity this year. As BH pointed out, he's just as likely to be traded. He was an awful shooter in college and needs to show he can be better than awful in Maine. I expect that he will, but it might take some time.FWIW, I'm confident that Walsh will get a look later in the season. Right now CJM has two main nuts to crack (obviously beyond "stay healthy"): 1. Yeah, I get the theory of Banton as a PG, but Svi seems like much more of a threat with the ball in his hands.I'm not confident Walsh will get any opportunity this year. Extremely small sample, but I'm pretty surprised Banton is getting off the bench before Svi (this also occurred during pre-season).Banton is a project with no current skills, whereas Svi is a vet with clear skills in passing and shooting (and has a decent handle to boot). In the terrible bench performance from the other night, Svi was the only one who ended up with a positive plus/minus. I expect him to crack the back end of the rotation soon.

Yeah, i think Joe sees the upside with Banton as a big guard who can help mask some of PP's defensive shortcomings so he likes the idea of them playing together. The problem is Banton is completely useless both on and off-ball (and despite his size, is no defensive monster) and PP is fairly useless off-ball unless he's standing in the corner. They're a terrible pairing. It's all a small sample obviously but it has looked to me like Payton has struggled to initiate and Banton doesn't have a ton to offer playing off the ball and maybe both would benefit from swapping roles a bit, at least in those bench mob minutes.
If Hauser is lighting it up from 3, I don't think there's any way they would deal him for a 3rd-string big.Funny enough, Boston's TOP6 has made the bench the only intrigue/drama this season.
Banton & Brissett signed/joined Boston earlier than Stevens/Svi. Banton/Brissett showed up at the Auerbach Center early this summer and worked their asses off. Like HRB points out there are unwritten rules on how bench pecking orders operate. CJM is giving them an initial chance to climb into the TOP10 ladder.
Banton's age/size/ball-handling skills make him intriguing but still a project (but more developed & 4+yrs older than Walsh)
Brissett/Stevens/Svi all have similar age/NBA experience profiles. Expect them to fight it out for the 10th-man role.
(figure Hauser/PP will start shooting 3s at a 40%+ rate and retain 7/8).
When nagging injuries/load mgmt start happening to the TOP6 in the next month we'll see PP/SH/10/11 mixed in much more.
ALSO hope CJM gives Svi Myk a long look to see if he can be a Hauser clone. If Sam goes on a 3pt heater Brad may need to trade his cheap contract to get a playable 3rd BIG
Svi Myk would have to come in and produce for 2-3 months for Brad to consider itIf Hauser is lighting it up from 3, I don't think there's any way they would deal him for a 3rd-string big.
Now filter out garbagetime...
It is, per the author. Now filter out garbagetime...
Indy and OKC both are attmepting to play faster (Indy with Haliburton and then acquiring Obi Toppin and drafting Jarace Walker).Congrats to the Clippers on their Week 1 Halfcourt Championship
More seriously, note the (net) top 10, which probably bears watching:
1. LAC 24.1
2. DEN 15.6
3. BOS 13.1
4. PHI 11.8
5. IND 10.3
6. GSW 9.0
7. DAL 8.8
8. SAC 7.9
9. OKC 7.7
10. PHX 4.8
Philly, Indiana, Dallas and OKC. I don't think of the first 3 as big fast-break / transition teams, so their ranking high up on a list of halfcourt performance probably bears watching, as it stabilizes over the next few weeks.
Poole went home and kicked his dog that night. White drove him nuts too, albeit to a lesser extent. Will be interesting to see how we defend the quicks. In years past it seemed like the C's struggled to contain jitterbug PGs (HOFer Ish Smith).
It was nice to see Jrue lock Jordan Poole right up. In one instance JP dribbled into JH and completely collapsed.
Maybe something to keep a casual eye on with Maxey & Dame.
note: Quickly had a nice Game 1, but Jrue was busy with Randle
Thought we handled Brunson pretty well, and Quickly's night went well because he was thermonuclear from 3.note: Quickly had a nice Game 1, but Jrue was busy with Randle
Any one of those guys would be fine if the Cs want to add a body. Given the sample sizes, I feel like bench scoring will be more of a problem for this squad than big depth so I'd lean Burks or maybe Morris. It does feel like Olynyk covers both and he feels like a Brad circle of trust type but who knows.Tried to take a look at buyout candidates making below the non-taxpayer MLE and found a few interesting names but it’s not pretty.
Delon Wright
Kelly Olynyk
Jeff Green
Monte Morris
Alec Burks

Damn. What do we worry about now? I guess 3rd center could be something. What a difference a game makes. Another blowout, another 4th quarter bench effort, but this time the Celtics got a lot more from the bench in both regular and garbage time.
The Celtics were ahead at the half, 75-54, and the bench had 14 points and played pretty well alongside the starters. They got more minutes, too, with the Celtic starters getting ~15 minutes each.
The starters also played most of the third quarter, which the Celtics win 34-17.
The Celtics went into the 4th up 109-71, and it was all bench players in the 4th.
But tonight, the bench scored 46 points in the 4th - the highest scoring quarter of the game. They also allowed 33, Indiania's higher scoring quarter.
The Celtics 155 points was their third highest regulation score in franchise history.
Pritchard played 26 minutes and was a +32 (3rd on the team behind Tatum and White), scoring 15 points on 6-10 shooting and adding a team-leading 9 assists. It was like he was a different guy.
Hauser also got his shot to fall, playing 19 minutes and scoring 17 points, including 5-6 from three.
Brissett's stats look lousy: 4 points, 1 rebound, 2 steals in 19 minutes, but he was a +21 in 19 minutes and he made some hustle plays.
Banton was able to get to the rim, scoring 11 points on 4-4 shooting, all in the 4th.
Mykhailiuk and Stevens also played and had their moments.
From a coaching perspective, it looked like JM made a real effort to give Pritchard, Hauser, and Brissett some real minutes in the first half, and I would also guess that... things were said to the all the backups after the 4th quarter debacle in Washington.
Kornet was +7 in 6 minutesDamn. What do we worry about now? I guess 3rd center could be something.
They filter garbage time out of those stats, so this game shouldn't affect their numbers...Would like to see where Indiana falls to after tonight’s massacre
So only the first half counts? They filter garbage time out of those stats, so this game shouldn't affect their numbers...
