What is next for BB?

I'm really baffled by the "why would BB want the Falcons" discussion.....

He's a football coach, he wants to coach football. The Falcons are likely the best team that is going to offer him the job. SEA fired their all-time best coach to get younger... every other team is worse than the Falcons, ranging from total rebuilds to whatever the Chargers are. ATL is missing their QB, but also won 7 games last year with Desmond Ritter, they can upgrade and be a legit playoff contender (especially in the NFC South).

What better team has a HC spot open?

Wait, that article hints at BB and McKay with a good relationship. Just because of the Competition Committee? There’s nothing else, right?

Bill has taken a second meeting with the Falcons, who have been clearly interested in him for quite a while. I'm a little surprised people on SOSH are so skeptical about this possibility. I can imagine their announcing an actual agreement with BB (and Josh and any number of former Patriots staffers) as soon as Monday. It's not a done deal, but it doesn't seem terribly far from that.

I just can’t think of any reason why BB would want to coach the Falcons.
I believe BB once said that "coaching is coaching." Of course, that was in reference to putting Patricia & Judge in charge of the offense.

I don’t think many are skeptical of him joining the Falcons, this seems like the most likely possibility. I imagine some are surprised that teams aren’t going nuts to try to sign him, there was certainly some who were of the mindset that lots of teams would be interested- at one point some thought the Pats would be able to get a massive haul for him in a trade, no? And now that’s he available for just money, it doesn’t seem like the anticipated rush to hire him is really happening. Hard to know why at this point, but if he is still the best coach in the league, why aren’t teams lining up?

Maybe his agent told certain teams he’s not interested. At his age, he doesn’t have to rush into a bad situation. He may not want to be in the west coast or Las Vegas. Carolina seems like a shit sandwich. Besides Tennessee, what else would be left?

Philly is the dark horse still, but that's a tougher division, lots of egos, tough media, Hurts is ??...and they really looked like shit the second half of the season.

If full control over personnel wasn’t an issue, I think the Commanders job would be the best one available. They have something like 6 picks in the top 100, have some decent foundational players, a QB you can play while bringing along the #2 pick, and likely the most cap space in the league.

I think people are discounting the age factor. Belichick is going to be 72 when the next season starts; it's no guarantee he'll be coaching for another ten years. Teams would much rather find the next Sean McVay or DeMeco Ryans and be set for the next 10-15 years at the position than to invest in a head coach who might only be interested in coaching long enough to break the record he's pursuing. That's why you'll hear Mike Vrabel's name as a candidate in places you'd expect would be eager to hire Belichick. Even if his resume is nowhere near Bill's, he profiles as a similarly tough, details guy, and he's almost a quarter-century younger.

The Commanders' top candidate is reportedly the Lions OC Ben Johnson. He's almost half Bill's age. (He'll be 38 next season.)

We have to get over ourselves. We weren't a top franchise when he took over in 2000. The Falcons currently have a lot more talent on both sides of the ball than the team he just left.
There are a lot of teams who have more talents than the Falcons though, who I’d think would be interested in a guy like BB. Apparently not, which is surprising to me.

I disagree, I don't think you are giving the Falcon's roster enough credit, beside the QB situation they are pretty well set up. They have a big hole at QB but that can be quickly filled with Cousins and/or Baker signing and go from there, other than that they have a solid core of role players to work with. I don't think it will take much to make the Falcons perennial favorites in that division.

Usually the most talented teams don’t replace their head coaches. Which teams that have openings have more talent than the Falcons?

Why is Baker going to be available tho? I have to imagine TB will lock him up.

Because it's an NFL job that's open and available?
Yeah I get it. But again, a guy with his accolades and accomplishments I would have thought would have had more suitors from better franchises. Clearly not the case, but it just surprised me, that’s all.

He'll be standing there holding his wife's hands, looking forlorn while she looks up at him with sadness and pity.
I'm serious - I worry about that guy if BB ghosts him now. Imagine being the founder of The Home Depot, a member of the tres commas club and feeling like an also-ran?

I mean.. it's arguably the best job among non-playoff teams, and playoff teams generally do no fire their coaches. Also... "better franchises" what does that even mean. The Falcons are generally well run, considerably more so than the history for example the Patriots had when they hired Parcells. They have a good owner, they spend money, it's an attractive job.

Well run or not, and it's arguable that they aren't well run, the team hasn't made the playoffs since 2017. They have 4 playoff wins since 2004. Spending money doesn't mean well run. Dallas spends money. So do the Jets and Chargers. Dallas at least wins 12 games a season before dying in the playoffs. Chargers and Jets have been in the hoosegow for over a decade.

It's attractive to Bill because it appears it is his only option.

Atlanta's situation really isn't as bad as people are making it sound.
  • Atlanta has an estimated $25M in cap, and simply cutting Heinicke and old friend Jonnu Smith (poor Jonnu must be really looking forward to this reunion) saves them another $15M. So, they have plenty of wiggle room to make signings to beef up weaknesses.
  • Those weaknesses consist of secondary and QB. We all know the QB market, so we won't rehash it. But the secondary market is decent. They'll have the ability to make it a decent unit out of the gate.
  • We know BB loves teams that can stop the run. Atlantas very good there.
  • The offensive line is very good.
  • They really aren't losing much to free agency.
  • They have the 8th pick in the draft.
  • Their division sucks and BB will be able to sleepwalk into the playoffs.

The cap space seems like a decent number, but it's just 18th. There's big group between $25-30M, but #12 is Arizona and they have 25% more space. They can play a little but not go crazy. Just have to be creative.

True. But as mentioned, cutting Heinicke and Smith gets them to $40M. From there, restructures and extensions - which they're primed for with 50% of their cap spent on their top 8 players (as a point of reference, it takes 17 Patriots to reach 50% of the cap) - will give them as much room needed to be able to sign the players they want.

Sure, but other teams can add cap space too, I just didn't to the math. The Pats can cut JC Jackson and save $14M is spotrac is to be believed.

I agree with your overall point though. He can win there.

the Saints--is that cap space hell? $82M OVER?
