I actually think Atlanta is a great situation for BB. A really solid roster, high draft pick, $37 million in cap space, a supportive owner, and an underachieving team that has been coached by a guy who is both a jerk and a fool (BB may be a jerk, too, but he's no fool).

Sign Cousins or Wilson and to me this has the highest chance for there to be "BB is a genius for turning around a 7-10 team" headlines. Philly and Dallas have a lot more downside (though I guess I could see Dallas in an Odd Couple sort of way -- sort of rooting for it just because will be telenovela gold. But I don't think BB would want that).

A key is what does BB want to sign on for in terms of duration? The NFL talking heads think he's just looking to pass Shula in about 3 seasons, but if he's thinking he's going to do another 6-7 years (especially with his sons in tow) Atlanta looks more enticing. Having said that, the sons of BB apparently have jobs with Mayo next season if they want them.

not to mention the worst division in football and neither Carolina or New Orleans is likely to be good next year. Tampa may or may not be.

Atlanta, if they got Cousins, would be a great spot for Bill

Whereever he goes, BB is going to have to accept not having complete control. Is any team under consideration considering that?

Do teams think Bill is cooked? I do wonder whether having an offense as dysfunctional the last two years as ours combined with the bad drafts has teams scared off. Also, even tho he has a limited number of years left, I wonder a bit whether teams might want to see what happens with the Patriots next season in his absence.

Another possibility is that Bob Kraft for years now at the owners' meetings have been telling the others about different ways BB has pissed him off about one thing or another. That might give other owners some pause about bringing BB on board. This is still early days after Black Monday, though.

I was told teams would be falling all over themselves to hire BB. That being said, seems likely that he can get the Falcons job if he wants it, right? The fact that the Cowboys and Eagles are choosing to keep their guys says something, though, doesn’t it?

Not really. Changing coaches can be disruptive, and both teams did make the playoffs.

Says a lot that BB went to see Blank right away. With Gronk's comments and others, the way this is playing out only reinforces it might have been a decision reached long before now.

I don't think playoff teams not firing their coaches is a referendum on BB.

I don't really understand why BB would want to go there (assuming he has other options, maybe he doesn't). But it is pretty easy for me to root for him to succeed there as opposed to some of the other places he may have landed.

Easy division should get him 8+ wins. No QB, but in position to get one in draft or FA. BB can spend some time on the defense as the offense has some skill guys (outside of QB).

EDIT: That's a guess from someone with an optimistic take on what he might see. He lets Josh or whoever take control of offense, and he works on defense.

I doubt it. Unless you hear about Rich McKay getting fired. They gave Fontenot a vote of confidence, and McKay has been running the show a long time there. I would guess Bill has been given assurances he'll have a big say, but he's not running things, he's coming in to coach for 2-4 years he's not going to have the time or desire to completely rebuild the structure there.

Probably doesn’t want to be in LA due to family ties here. Carolina’s owner is an ass, and the team looks like it’s in for a longer rebuild than the Pats. Maybe Vrabel warned him off of Tennessee.

Atlanta is a way better situation than TEN, honestly I think for Bill it's the best of the open jobs except maybe LAC.

It's actually not bad there. 2024 they have rough cap (lot of it is the JC Jackson hit), but plenty of space going forward after that, which means they could pretty easily re-structure, stretch and extend guys.
For example... Khalil Mack has a $38M cap hit... he's not staying on that, he'll be extended or cut, Bosa will be extended, Allen/Williams both in last year of deal with big cap numbers, will be extended, cut or traded.

Edit- I think ATL is a better situation all-around, but... having a QB as good as Herbert is appealing.

I highly doubt Bill is interested in going there with the same QB room, and I doubt he is expecting to coach more than 3-4 additional years.

They have recent high draft picks at the skill positions, though I’m still not entirely sure how good those guys are. Would he bring along McDaniels?

Will be interesting to see what Pats players Bill brings wherever he goes. Could see Jennings, Dugger and a few lesser parts potentially ending up in Atlanta. Could see BB loving a Dugger/Bates combo at safety although that would be a ton of money for that group (BB does love his safeties though)

I think yes on Josh. And for sure he'll upgrade at QB. Fields, Mayfield, Brady(!), Cousins, 2024 draft pick...I think those are all in play.

Of course, its also possible that the other owners, given the unparalleled success of the Pats might think of Bob Kraft as a whiny pain in the ass.

To me it's quite clearly the best open position out there. Chargers (started to write San Diego..old habits) arguably better given the QB, but Atlanta has good talent, good cap situation, good draft slot, and weak competition. Easiest turnaround, especially as the previous coach was bottom of the barrel bad. Going from 7 to 10 wins is easy to envision. Heck, even with Ridder it's easy to envision getting to 9 wins...more with better QB.

The key will be getting a better QB which, as we know, has not been BB's strong suit. But if he's not in charge of buying the groceries, he might be saved there, too.

Mac is a dud obviously (although I still think he could find some moderate success in a better situation) but Bb did draft and develop Brady, Cassel, Brissett and Garoppolo and signed Hoyer as an UDFA. Obviously the non-Brady’s are varying quality but they all started games (Jimmy G got his team to the Super Bowl) and they all surpassed the value expected for where they were found. Even Stidham (and to a much lesser extent Mallett) gave you about what you’d expect for a 4th and 3rd round guy - which is very little as far as QB’s go. Davey, O’Connell and Kingsbury didn’t provide much but I’d actually argue that QB has been one of BB’s best positions in identifying NFL talent and go as far as to say that no front office has done it better over a decent sample size in the last 25 years. His hit rate there is significantly higher than average.

Finding even a semi-competent backup QB outside the first round is fairly rare, having over 50% of the guys you take shots on be at least medium or long term rosterable QB’s is impressive.

about wilson he only lookes at the 1st read refused to throw the ball in the middle of the field will audule out of the called play at best now he is a trent dilper type can only win if u have a 2013 type sea def in front of him and will want the raiders or rams first

i think its unlikely the jets go far next season because the better they play the more rodgers will run his morth if mayo hits on the QB and gets better line play ne will be ahead of the jets

if mayo goes 9-8 next year u might have a mike t type of coach

Unless Minny is really willing to let Cousins walk, at which point i think the Falcons would basically cut him a blank check to make it happen, I'm not liking that Atlanta fit for Bill.

People keep overvaluing the hype pieces they have in place on the offensive side as if they've actually looked spectacular since reaching the NFL level. They haven't, and that hasn't been all because of poor QB play. Assuming you don't/can't get Cousins and have to settle on say Russ or Jimmy since nobody will be selling one of the top 3 QB options in the draft this year, is that really good enough when you circle back around to the fact Bill is already offensively challenged as is? Is Josh gonna come in as OC and make an aging Russell Wilson work when he couldn't even make Jimmy G work in Vegas? Are we doing Jimmy take 3 now?

Part of these meetings in ATL must be about the plan for a QB. That's an obvious gap in their team. I agree if he goes in there with the same blindspots he had in NE, they will have a hard time succeeding.
