And it wasn't just Mac. Remember the 2020 season when Cam got to the 1 yard line against Seattle but got stuffed? Against Denver a few weeks later, they had the ball at our 28 with 3 mins to go and stalled right outside the Broncos red zone. Then, you had the infamous Cam fumble in the Bills' red zone a few weeks after that. And after THAT, they had the ball down 7 against Houston and stalled outside of the red zone.

For whatever reason, this team has sucked pretty hard in "close and late" situations since TB12 left. I know we were spoiled but I generally have zero confidence in this team when the game is close and late. Thankfully, Marcus Jones helped us last year against the Jets with the PR TD.
Cam won only 7 games as a Pat, got stopped on the goal-line that one time, yet still had 3 game winning drives that year, which is 2 more than Mac has.

Jesus let's stop worrying about backup offensive lineman and star being fans.

Pats 38, Iggles 2 -- but on a cool intentional safety by the Pats. Jones throws so many yards people start wondering if he's Prime Sanders' kid. Mapu hits Brown so hard AJ's girlfriend dies.DeMario Douglas proves to be the most effective little guy running around since Super Mario. Barmore is constantly harassing Hurt. The Eagles DBs are just old and shitty. Someone realizes that a lot of the Eagles stars are actually pretty freaking old and don't really play to their reputation--at least not in week 1 after cruising all summer.

Screw this shity fourth rate city. Yeah, I'll give them the flag, the constitution, the declaration of independence, the thomas easkins paintings and the the comic masterpiece trading places, but other than that, what has philly done for us? Ok the cheesesteaks...

EDIT: Cheesesteaks for cheesestakes. Which are what, something you use to kill a lactose intolerant vampire?
Any excuse…

Interesting thought—listening to pods with reporters from the Philly side they say not to mush rush Jalen Hurts. They say he is much better inside the pocket than outside.
Yeah, I've read this as well, that he's good on designed bootlegs and runs and good from the pocket, but not good on the run due to being pressured. Have to go after him.

Great. What's this prove? Derek Carr is 16th all-time in GW drives, Bledsoe is 19th. Freaking Jay Cutler is 25th. Carson Wentz has 12, yet his passer rating when trailing in 4th quarter with less than 4 minutes to go is lower than his career rating. Great QBs will float to the top of this list, but there's so much noise in these numbers.

How about 4th quarter comebacks, which is a different thing--Jay Cutler is top 25. Derek Carr has more than Joe Montana. Carr gets credit for a 4th quarter comeback win in the game last season where Chandler Jones scored with no time on the clock.

It's just a weird thing to think matters a lot--Stevenson doesn't fumble in that one game and we kick the FG, Mac has another one. Does that *actually* make a difference in what kind of QB he is?

Right now, Mac appears to be an outlier. Instead of looking at the top of the all time charts, consider this: Who are the best QBs who are bad at it? (I don't know I am just asking).

I don't know, most of the lists don't show things like success rate, etc.

I also think, and people can disagree, that last year was so bad overall that I have no idea what to think of it and am inclined to throw it out. Let's see Mac in a decently coached offense like year 1 and hopefully this season.

You have Lane Johnson at one OT spot and Jordan Mailata at the other, with Kelce and Landon Dickerson in the middle. Cam Jurgens is the closest thing to a weak spot at RG, and he is pretty good. It will be week 1, so the DL usually has an advantage over the OL in terms of readiness, but I don't know that Belichick will attack the QB as much as try to clog the passing lanes from his side of the LoS. We will see.

The defense plays a role too. Mac would have a few more that the defense coughed up. The Dallas game in 2021, the Raiders game last year. Add in the 3 lost fumbles and he could have anywhere around 5-6 game winning drives.

I also think the team plays a role. Part of the reason bad QB's like Carr and Cutler are high on the list is because they were behind a lot. They're going to get more opportunities.

Yeah, I remember that classic stat about how good Manning was and how much better than Brady he was because he had all of those game winning drives. Yeah, Brady had fewer largely because his teams were winning in the 4Q. Context matters a ton.

How big of a deal is this for Sunday?
I feel like it's pretty big. I kind of liked him matched up with DeVonta Smith. I like Smith, but Jones was a guy that could keep up with him and actually, somehow, be the bigger player.

Mac's passer rating in that scenario is 58.6. In trailing with under two minutes to go scenarios, it's a staggering 36.7. Sure, all the small sample size caveats apply, but he's been awful in these situations when given the chance.

But even wilder to me were his stats when leading or tied with under four minutes to go. Not because they are awful, but because he has NINE career attempts in that context, which is crazy.

Jack Jones to IR.
Ty Montgomery called up from practice squad to take his place. Hopefully Jones is more diligent in following team rules during this IR stint and he is back in time for Week 5.

Calvin Munson elevated from practice squad, so is eligible to play but not on 53-man roster. Finally, Reiss tweets that Corral is on exempt/left squad list, which is strange if correct.

Hadn't thought about this, but today Jim Murray mentioned if you're not at the game but want to watch the tribute to #12 you can go to patriots.com to watch it (also think 98.5 will be playing it over the air).
During halftime CBS will be going back to the crew to recap all the games so not airing it.

Is it pure BB full offseason preparation respect that has this line at -3.5? These injuries along with already being a bad matchup seems like not enough points.

They did not elevate Reagor, so without Parker the WRs would be: Smith-Schuster, Bourne, Douglas, and Boutte. Montgomery could play some WR and Gesicki is basically a big WR. No one with stretch the field speed. I would expect a lot of 2 TE sets.

Without Jack Jones, it looks like the starting corners will be Gonzalez and Jon Jones. Slot could be Bryant, Marcus Jones, or Mills. Seems less likely that it would be Wade or Speed.

Of their 10 OLs, 3 had no or minimal preseason time (Strange, Anderson, Onwenu), 2 are brand new to the team and have barely played (Wheatley, Lowe), and 3 are rookies (Mafi, Sow, J.Andrews). (The others are D.Andrews and Brown). The line has the potential to be a real shitshow.

I already expected them to throw the ball over the middle and test the Eagles safeties and linebackers in coverage more than their corners, but at least Parker provided some concern on the outside, now everything is funneled in. Henry/Gesicki/Juju/Bourne is a group that has too much overlap both in skill sets and in terms of the area of the field they want to operate in, but they'll have to show up now.

I get the vibe because I share it but I don’t get the logic. The Birds should cover this easy so why won’t they.
Week 1 craziness. Everyone thought KC was going to hump the shit out of the Lions. When Vegas calls a game close that seems sure to be a 7-10 point game in the first 3 weeks of the season I am like a cat on a hot tin roof about it.

Nobody Cares
The 9'ers are really putting it upon the hapless Steelers here, early.

Edit: Whoops, wrong thread. I'll throw in a worthless prediction of 23-20 New England.

It's fair to not bet week 1 until you see the teams actually playing but I think the Eagles should be favored by 6 at least.

Chiefs didn't cover their first few games last year, were missing Kelce and the Lions ended the season winning 8 of 10. The Patriots lost 5 of their last 7 and could only beat teams with backup quarterbacks last year while the Eagles only lost 1 game with Hurts playing. The only case for optimism is if you think Patricia was that bad or Mac Jones will get magic juice from TB12 being in the building, and I don't see it.

This doesn't mean they're going to have a terrible year or that Mac is worthless, but Philly is really good.

Be forgiving. It takes 2-3 weeks before you get in the rhythm of football. A 4:25 kickoff in week 1 is weird.
Outside of today, 4:25 starts in September and October in New England are the best if you're not attending the game. The best weather of the year, tons of yard work to do, kids sports, cookouts etc. You can do all that and come in at 4:30pm, crack a beer and ignore your family. Give me the 1pm games in Nov/Dec.

All that ink spilled over Jack Jones in the offseason and he suffers a serious hamstring strain in practice? That doesn't feel good at all.
