The Plan For the #1, er, #3 Overall Pick?

Jackson still hasn't worked out for the Celtics, right? Seems odd to make this kind of trade if the target player hasn't worked out for your yet.
I mean, we know this is definitely move #1 of 2, right? If Danny was keeping all of the picks, then there's no reason not to wait until the draft. He needs them now.

That's a bit of an exaggeration of the Jackson incident. It wasn't great, but what it actually was is that a woman threw a drink in his friend's face and a (probably drunk) Jackson screamed at her and hit her car.

Sure I guess, but I can't see an NBA franchise in the position the Celtics are just treading water for 3 years when they are one of the better teams in the league. Long term planning makes holding the BKN pick useful, but you can't really expect them to just waste the primes of the guys they have now. Butler even through his early/mid 30s is a pretty good asset whether as a valuable member of your team or trade bait. If they max IT I'd be worried, but getting a young All-NBA caliber player for some of their less valuable picks is a nice way of balancing draft based upside with proven elite talent.

Depends what you mean by done. The current team for GS is unlikely to last more than 2 or 3 years at most unless Thompson and Green take unprecedented pay cuts.
If they argument is that you should burn out the primes of your current starters, and the entire first contracts of Brown and whoever they pick this year waiting on Durant to decline... well that seems dumb to me. You can't really build a team to be good in 5+ years, the contract lengths alone make it really really difficult, as does projecting who will be bad that far out for best lotto odds.. and then hoping for luck. Better off being good without selling off the very best future assets and hoping that your luck is an injury or chemistry explosion in the GS lockerroom
If he screamed in public that he would "beat her ass" you better believe he's beat someone in private. And even if not, that threat is still assault

Because they have more value without protections and the team trading for them might actually care about such a thing? What a stupid take.
Yeah, it sounds stupid. But I think the implicit assumption is that Danny knows what he needs to complete the follow-up deal. Otherwise, he doesn't make this one. And if he doesn't need the protections, then he doesn't need them.

My guess is that it's the reverse protection discussed previously. If the Lakers pick isn't top 3 next year, then they get the Kings swap the next year. That's how the wires got crossed. Only two picks coming, but both the Lakers/Kings picks are involved.

If it isn't a reverse protection he fucked up, period. A 1st with no chance of being another top pick shouldn't even interest him.

And either way it's not enough.

Has anyone seen this type of trade before? I can't really see anyone calling that "protection". Sounds more like a type of "option" to me. But I guess we'll find out.

Was nice of Danny to let Golden State have the spotlight for a few weeks. Basketball universe centers around Boston right now..8 firsts and a max cap slot.

So many options

Man, this just keeps getting worse. The last time I was this confused was when the Red Sox traded Doug Mientkiewicz.

That turned out okay, but...

If we're moving from 1 Fultz to 3 Jackson or Tatum just for a Kings 2019 pick that's just awful

We seriously can't get more from someone else? And helping our #3 rival?

The number of drunk people who yell that they'll "beat your ass" during an altercation who have not in fact beaten anyone is actually exceptionally high. Yes it's a threat, and it isn't good. It is however not something most people would categorize as making someone a "woman abuser"

Back to the trade Woj has it as a 18 LAL w/ top and bottom protections, if it stays in PHI then unprotected SAC.

like the deal less than I did, but still think it's fine.

Really need to see the protection on the Lakers pick. As reported, I don't know why Danny would be so interested in pulling the trigger.

Actually turned on SportsCenter for this. Hoping for some expert NBA analysis. Nope. Got Stephen A. instead. He likes the trade for both teams. They are also crediting 'TNT's David Aldridge' for breaking the story. Never seen that before from ESPN.

How is that better? They're getting 1 extra pick instead of 2.
Depends on the protections. If that Sac pick from original deal was protected and then turned to shit, this might end up as good or better.

Edit - And there you have it. That deal is perfectly fine.

Distinct feeling we'll be waiting for 2019 for this. Not ideal. Pretty iffy value here.

Which is why the minutiae of the future picks probably won't affect us. They'll be headed to Chicago with Bradley most likely.
Huge overpay if BK pick is touched. Two lotto picks period is a fortune for two years.

If the LAL/SAC pick is the main piece for Jimmy Butler, than they are trading a guy who is unlikely to be as good as Jimmy Butler (plus other considerations) for guy who actually is Jimmy Butler, and another guy who will be very close in value to the guy they trade away.

Those protections give a material chance of a top 5 pick. So, figure it's 1 for 3 and a 50% chance of another top 5 pick, with say 80% chance it's a second lottery pick.

Whether that is worth the drop from Fultz is a scouting question--it's a lot of value for two spots in draft in the abstract.

Rozier starting at point in18-19?

Can we afford 4 max guys, none of whom are top-10 players?
Probably not. Though there is a decent case to be made that Butler sneaks into the back end of the top 10 right now.
Honestly I really like a Hayward/Butler 2/3 situation, both strong 2 way guys with complementary offensive skills. And it likely means not maxing IT which is a terrible idea.

Well, Fultz is gone, so I guess the big question now is what the Celts are trading to get Butler. Hopefully not #3 plus the Lakers pick.

I think your odds are off significantly. I'd peg that Sac pick at 80% odds of top 5 where we sit today. The protections only increase the odds we get a top 5 pick in the next two years.

.I suppose the thing we all have to swallow here is the #1 pick wasn't going to be Markelle Fultz. Or at least that the C's did not see him as a transcendent player. Obviously if it's a Tim Duncan like player, that deal isn't happening. So in some ways they punted a year to what might be a better class. Rationalizing a bit, I know, but I see the logic anyways.

Eh, it's a fair deal. They are basically getting a future top 5 pick to move down 2 slots and draft a guy they would have anyway.
If it's true that they would have drafted him anyway (and I don't assume that it is, but it's possible), then literally the pick swap by itself if a good deal because they get the same guy but pay him less. A future top 5-ish pick on top is a pretty damn huge sweetener.
