That's the reason the Seahawks have been transitioning away from "12th Man" to "12" and calling the fans "twelves."

The NFL and its teams have many flaws and things that they are bad at, but marketing is not one of them.

But I think Sesame Street owns that trademark.

Someone did slash his tires a week and a half ago here in Indy. He attributed it to Pats fans, which made me chuckle. If you're Greg Doyel, how the fuck do you figure out which one of the millions of people who hate your guts decided to slash your tires, and for what reason?
Wasn't me.

I wouldn't be surprised if he made that up in order to take a gratuitous shot at Pats fans considering some of the blowback he's receiving.

I hope video comes out that someone from the Colts was responsible.

Nice piece. I love this.

He calls a play we’d practiced all year. We ran it three times during the season in the same situation, to 100 percent completion. Perfect. Unstoppable play.
Maybe other coaches would notice it as well, but we know that BB was keyed in on this play in the practices leading up to the SB. A play they had run 3 times all season and BB is like Malcolm you have to get to this spot.

I would like to think this is why BB is so much better than everyone else. Each team thinks they have an "Unstoppable Play", and BB finds it and figures out how to stop it. Then when it is called during the biggest moment of the season, his team is able to stop their "Unstoppable Play" and win it all.

He sounds so honest. It was generous of him to share.
That pain. As a fan I feel I know it, against the Giants, elsewhere long ago against the Mets. But, from inside his helmet he made that moment this year fresh in a way no mere new camera angle could. Thanks.

I was visiting Boston during the "SQUISH THE FISH" playoff season and I placed a video camera on my brothers TV facing us watching some game, Dolphins, Raiders, I don't remember. Also don't remember watching it, the video that is, or showing it to anyone. I know it was pre-1986 because the camera belonged to the company I worked for in California and I left that job in Dec. '85. Was there an Internet then?

Since Belichick arrived in 2000, Patriots finishes:

4 Super Bowl Championships (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014)
2 Super Bowl Losses / Conference Championships (2007, 2011)
3 AFCCG Losses (2006, 2012, 2013)
2 Divisional Losses (2005, 2010)
1 WC Loss (2009)
3 Did Not Make Playoffs (2000, 2002, 2008)

That's right: even though there's only one Super Bowl winner, that's been the outcome more than any other outcome in the Belichick era.

1 16-0
3 14-2
1 13-3
4 12-4
2 11-5
2 10-6
1 9-7
1 5-11

12-4 is the most common record. So 2014's finish of 12-4 with a Super Bowl Championship is really just a typical Belichick / Brady season. Man, how blessed are we?

But Rex Ryan owns the Patriots!!

Scary thing is Brady has been in the league 13 years as the starter (excluding first year and 2008) and made the Super Bowl nearly 50% of the time. He also lost 3 other AFC title games. Unreal.

A copy of that post, with the words "And the records:" inserted above the list of records has been e-mailed (with a credit to SoSH) has been e-mailed to about 20 people thus far.

Outstanding.

That the most common outcome has been a SB championship is truly remarkable.

Yup, and in the ~ 40 years before Bill came, the franchise had never had a 12 win season and only four 11 win seasons ('76, '85, '86, '96).

If you tweak that slightly to only use Brady seasons, it's even more remarkable:

4 Super Bowl Championships (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014)
2 Super Bowl Losses / Conference Championships (2007, 2011)
3 AFCCG Losses (2006, 2012, 2013)
2 Divisional Losses (2005, 2010)
1 WC Loss (2009)
1 Did Not Make Playoffs (2002)

Brady has been to the Super Bowl (6) 50% often more than he's fallen short of the conference championship game (4).

They haven't played out the string since 2000 since even in 2002 and 2008 they were alive heading into week 17. There have only been 18 weeks of football that didn't involve the Patriots playing, including playoffs, since 2001. Just meaningful football every week and the Pats win most of them, its been an incredible run.

American tackle football may well be relegated to the likes of horse racing or boxing before we see the likes of this again.

It basically requires both a HOF HC and a HOF QB. And then you need them go on a long run like this together, or you need HOF successors when one of them moves on.

If Brady can sustain this another few years --much less 7 or so, as he hopes -- they may put the records out of reach.

How about this one:  Since 2010 the Pats have an average margin of victory of 10.4 points per game.  So they are not only just beating the rest of the league handily, they are killing everyone, almost every single week.

After reading all of these impressive stats, you'd almost think the rest of the league is getting sick of the Pats.  I'm surprised no one is lashing out in frustration.

Breaking down how BB stopped Seattle's vaunted running game:

https://medium.com/pro-football-strategy/breaking-down-bill-belichick-s-super-bowl-defense-526a7deaed96

Bill Belichick’s game plan centers around stopping Marshawn Lynch, even at the expense of keeping more people back in the secondary for the pass defense. New England dedicates six men staying inside the tackle box against a one-back formation, and plays intense, press-man coverage across the board. Using giant defensive tackles like Vince Wilfork to control the guards and play a 2-gap technique frees up additional men to attack the ball carrier and lets the defense win the numbers game in the tackle box.

...with an accompanying book that talks about every, single, play:

I got so giddy watching that trailer.

That thing is going to be unbelievable.

Also, I'd pay serious coin for a full game replay w/ Belichick talking over the game for 3 hours: just breaking down plays, talking about schemes and the evolution of the game, sharing anecdotes, etc. Think that could be incredible.

Six to midnight.

Love that they have film of the heralded practice where Butler got burned on it.

Thank god BB understands his role in the history of the game and opens up for these kinds of things.

It's endogenous to the equation--he knows what's what because he's that intelligent. And so he knows what matters and what doesn't.

When we step back past all the bitching and moaning about him, Belichick makes a lot of sense.

I'm really looking forward to this. The one thing that would be delicious icing on the cake would be if they have a reaction shot of BB after the Butler interception--I don't think I've ever seen anything like that (happy to be corrected)

On the NBC broadcast, Bill was (rightfully) all business trying to prepare the offense to get the ball out of the shadow of the end zone. They called the timeout, and the cameras clearly caught him saying to Brady, "Now don't fuck around." It wasn't until after the Seattle false start that I first saw him crack a smile as he put his right arm up in celebration.

You can check out his reaction in this video. Belichick is on the opposite sideline, almost dead center screen.
