Patriots are soft says Denver reporter (who was most likely is one of the reporters cheering in the press box during the game)

“@denverpost: New England Patriots are too soft to repeat as NFL’s best says @markkiszla https://t.co/CpBkBJ0yaF

Schlereth is right though. The balls in that game were most definitely going to be deflated considering the temperature at game time.

Schlereth is the guy who used to pee in his pants to gain a little bit of competitive advantage, right? I know he wears a suit these days (without obvious urine stains), but I'm not sure he's a suitable advocate for - well, much of anything...

Never saw that Mark Schlereth tweet until now. I'm assuming he was joking and just having some fun with Patriot fans - after all, he was one of the few ESPN guys who stuck up for Brady earlier in the year. He's also the same guy who....

Consider Mark Schlereth, who spent six seasons as a Denver Broncos offensive lineman, protecting quarterback John Elway en route to two Super Bowl victories. In a 1998 playoff game at Kansas City, Schlereth and his fellow linemen coated their arms and the backs of their jerseys in Vaseline. The Chiefs' defenders couldn't grab onto the slimy Broncos and quickly complained to officials. It was quite a scene, Schlereth recalls, as officials used towels on the sidelines to wipe down the oily visitors in a game Denver would ultimately win, 14-10, on its way to a Super Bowl triumph.

"Did I grease up my jersey, and use sticky substances on my gloves? You're damn right," Schlereth said recently. "What you call cheating is a fine line. It's an interesting line. What we did, in the locker room, is called being creative. Certain cheating is snickered at, or applauded."

I suspect that Schlereth believes the following:

(1) players will do anything for an advantage
(2) things like deflating a ball or putting vaseline on your shirt is all gamesmanship and not a big deal

but that

(3) once a game has been decided, it is over.
(4) any complaints about referees, calls or injuries that affected the game is simply being a cry baby.

I read his most recent tweet to be in response to some Patriots fans complaining about the injuries to the Patriots as it impacted the Broncos game by pointing out some players that were injured for the Broncos with an added tweak to troll those same Patriots fans.

I need to shower. I hate Mark Schlereth.

Some great quotes from Belichick in here on Butler.

Link

"When he turns his head, he can look back for the ball and actually get faster," he said. "That's rare."

It didn't matter who he was assigned to cover in OTAs. From LaFell to Julian Edelman, Butler would be strapped onto them. Hence, his teammates stopped calling him Malcolm. His new name was "Strap."

The day before final cuts, Belichick approached Strap.

"You have a place to stay?" Belichick said.

"No sir; I don't," Strap said. "I'm in the team hotel, and I don't know if I'm going to be around."

The coach's response: "Oh, you are going to be around."

This paragraph struck me:
"Culturally, West Alabama and New England couldn't be more different," Belichick said. "The weather, lifestyle, public, demands of the football program, demands of the operation, the length of season, the length of each day, the amount of concentration that's needed through the course of each day from meetings to walkthroughs to practice to post-practice film to having an assignment or project to do at night. At West Alabama, you put on your uniform, go out there and play, go back to the dorm, play video games and goof off. So his development was on a lot of levels."
Belichick doesn't get enough credit for his people skills and teaching skills. He recognized that Butler was coming from a different situation than a lot of other guys and had to be handled differently.

He's also a great interview when the subject is football players playing football. His answers were incredibly detailed and, for me anyway, downright educational. No real coachspeak.

Malcolm's...sorry...Strap's story is just so awesome. From last man off the bench to surprise SB hero to one of the best corners this team has had in the Belichick era (so far, knock on wood). Even if he was a one hit wonder, he'd be a part of New England sports history, but it's so satisfying that he isn't.

So much for that tainted legacy. Glad to see the worm turn a bit or at the very least people just discount how much "cheating" it really was if he actually did something.
I imagine his performance this year, when presumably everyone knows they'd be crazy to have any ball tampering going on regardless of what did or did not happen in the past, has a lot to do with the discounting of the alleged cheating. At least among mostly rational folks. There's probably also the "what have you done for me lately" crowd, among whom the deflategate story has been receding in prominence while Peyton has been front and center thanks to his awfulness, benching, and now the QB controversy in DEN.

Today is a great day. Tradtionally, I throw in championship DVDs the the day before and day of playoff games to get me amped up, and it was starting to get a bid sad that I was going back so far despite the success. Malclom Butler, though.

Pittsburgh-based radio host currently whining on national CBS Sports radio that the Patriots have a long-time legacy of cheating and that he doesn't want "another sport's all-time records tainted by cheaters." A+ trolling. I get what I deserve for turning on sports radio on a Saturday night.

Is it that old WCW announcer? He hates the Patriots something fierce. I hope he also had a nice segment talking about how he wants one of his favorite Steelers ever James Harrison to continue his not-at-all suspicious turnaround at age 38 into another season.
