I really didn't want to take this guy... but at this point I feel I should.
27 years old, has a career 120 ERA+ in over 400 IP, and can be a spot starter as well as a solid bullpen arm.
Came back from back to back injuries last year, and was mediocre, but his K/9, BB/9 and velocity  were all back.

The Blumpkin All-Stars select...

Chris Capuano, SP/RP

The name just drips mediocrity.  Nobody has ever been excited by Chris Capuano, even Mrs. Capuano is just doing it out of obligation at this point.  But you know what?  The guy's actually pretty good.

Capuano had a decent start to his career, putting up 18 wins and leading the NL in Quality Starts in 2005, followed by an All-Star appearance in 2006.  He had a mediocre 2007 that ended in Tommy John surgery that he had problems coming back from.  Basically, he missed the better parts of 2 1/2 seasons.

Since he came back though, he's been sneaky good.  He's got a 3.84 xFIP, which is just a touch under his ERA over that time.  He puts up good K numbers while putting up excellent BB numbers.  And he's been durable, making 31 and 33 starts the past two seasons, so his injury history doesn't concern me.

He fits my team well because he gives me the flexibility of having a good lefty starter and either moving Cashner back into a dominant pen spot, or as general injury insurance.  He also has experience out of the bullpen, pitching there for a chunk of the 2010 season with the Brewers.  So I could end up making him my long man.  Either way, I'm happy to have a flexy-lefty who puts up solid numbers at this point in the draft.

Yep, I know I'm up, a little overwhelmed at work after a snow day and I need to fix a ton of timesheets. Between two potential picks so a write-up should be available shortly.

After looking at positional depth, one is okay, and one is not, so let's fill in a backup spot from the position of crappy depth.

With Pierzynski going, and almost every team needing two catchers, the depth of decent catchers there has gone pretty quickly, which leaves a mess of unproven younger guys, corpses, and the ones in-between who either cratered recently from a promising start or have settled into a role. For me, since it's the backup, it's more about filling holes in the offense.

Russell Martin is a quality starting catcher for me, but he's kind of terrible against right handed pitching, and at his age, I'd like to have someone to spell him about a third of the time, preferably in a way that shores up his offensive weaknesses. So I put a priority on getting a catcher who, over his career, has done better v. RHP. My offense continues to put a priority on patience as well, so one catcher stands out for me.

At 29, he's hopefully young enough to last as my backup catcher throughout, and is capable enough to start in the short-term if Martin gets hurt. He's shown good patience and good pop over his (admittedly) limited career, and while his flaws are obvious (low contact and high K-rate can be an ugly combination, his defense is...uh..spotty), he gives me enough value in a limited role to justify it.

Honestly, there's two players I like more at the spot, but one lost me due to age (if the team was a strict GFIN team, I'd have picked him three rounds ago) and another due to health and recent production concerns (honestly though, I thought someone would take a shot on him). This guy seems like the safest option, particularly since he's not a primary catcher. So I'm welcoming George Kottaras - Bench to the fold. Another Canadian.

I hope to use him primarily against RHP, taking about 30% of the catcher at-bats, although I expect I can't be that strict on the expectations there. I'll post a picture later on, but I PMed BigMike

Cellar is going to die a slow and painful trampoline related death for picking Joba. Interesting pick though because he may end up starting in 2014.

GK is another interesting one but I understand it because we are running low on catcher depth and if his power is for real it's always better to have a catcher who can hit righties

Kottaras was second in line behind Kratz with my last pick. He has come up awful in pretty much every pitch framing study (ex: Mike Fast) over the last few years and has generally been rated below average defensively, which is why I passed. But I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better "true catcher" bat on the board at this point. It would be interesting to see what he could put up in a full 450-500 AB season.

Cap is a pitcher I would have picked a round or two ago if I had gone a different way with my team. Solid pick this late

It's early, I just woke up, forgive me czar! (This would be a great time for that bowing smiley I've seen Sprowl use)

Once the other catchers go off the board, I can go a little more into why I took Kottaras over them, but I'm fully on board with czar here in terms of who GK is (a strong bat with poor defensive and framing abilities). I guess part of it is was more the devil you know over the devil you don't, since my other two guys have bigger question marks for this kind of activity. With GK's weaknesses, I at least know what they are and could, hypothetically, try to work around them.

On mobile, but I will take Jason Grilli, RP. Holland, McGee, and Grilli at the top of my pen...have fun trying to mount a comeback against that. Someone please handle the PM.

I'm going to grab a fourth outfielder who can start at any position. He's a plus-defender, but not great. His bat has pop, but he's not a great hitter. Basically, this guy is league average at every outfield position, which is awesome. Plus this was his pinch-hitting line from last season - .329/ .391/ .645/ 1.036.

Need a utility infielder, going with this guy.

Ronny Cedeno, Bench, New York Mets

Nearly 700 innings at 2B, 4500+ innings at SS, and has even played 100 innings between 3B/OF. He put up a 107 wRC+ last year, and plays average/above average defense at 2B and SS. Works for me.

If he gets his pick in before 5:15 I will immediately post mine. If not it will be around 6:30+ central.

OK. Well, I pm'd you my proxies and KFP as well.

I also went ahead and pm'd Terri and Farv to get them starting to think about their next move if they haven't already.

Thanks, Poutine and KFP.

Sorry guys, work went way longer than expected.

I need a backup infielder and don't have much time so I am going to go with Joaquin Arias, Bench, SF Giants.

Probably a really bad pick, but I am hoping he can get some playing time.  And he plays a lot of positions.  Great analysis, I know.

Crap. Stuck behind a wreck on 75. I can't bold or pm although I did give them both pms at 4:30.

Tyler Thornburg, sp6 or rp3. If he beats one of my starters out in spring training I'll have, most likely, Chris Archer to the bullpen.

That's a solid pick. Thornburg was one of the many I looked at when making my last pick. I was put off by the scouting report that said he exerts a ton of effort in his delivery and there have been a lot of questions about whether or not he'll be able to stick as a starter, but he's shown upper 90's as reliever and he has plus secondary pitches.

@Scoops, has a replacement been set up for Andrew?

@SMU, were you able to PM Terri?

I haven't gotten any nibbles for replacing Andrew. The spot is still open. If it gets back to him, I'm going to make the two picks for him.

Well, starting to fill out a bench may not be the most exciting thing in the world, but, it's something that needs to get done. And, at this point, to get someone who can play all three outfield positions, and is only 29, isn't too bad. So, I'm going with

You are dead to me.

EDIT: On a more serious note, Howard & Mayberry is actually a pretty good platoon at first.

This timing worked out well, thanks for playing into it.  I am traveling today but came back to the hotel with it just being my pick.  =)

I would like some infield help with my next pickup.

The Nightmare select Jordy Mercer, BP

I think I have scored a more than serviceable middle infielder here, and someone that can play extended time without completely ruining my offense.

The Corning Cholesterol select LRP Sean Burnett

So yeah, he is mostly a loogy, but he is not overly terrible against righties. He is just kind of bad. I could leave him in against pinch hitting righties that kind of suck and not have by balls recede into my body. Mostly. He had a hiccup two seasons ago. He had some bone chips removed over the off season. He gets little freak injuries in spring training lifting up his kids. I feel it a little early picking a LOOGY-esque guy, but man, a lot of them relievers are gone.

The Thunderbird Destroyers select Cody Allen RP

The kid has a plus fastball that hits the upper 90's and a plus power curve. He throws strikes and he's fearless. He was unhittable in his short time below AAA, and still put up great numbers when he reached that level. He's a converted starter from college and has already had TJ surgery. He's likely the Indians closer of the future but I'll take him and insert him as another guy who can step in and set up or close for me if needed. He's only 24 which fits well with the rest of my team. His walk rate went up last year in his cup of coffee in the bigs but I'm not overly concerned by it. I think that'll regress as he gets more experience.

I wanted to grab a lefty reliever, and he seems like the best one still around. Lefties can't touch the guy (441 OPS) and the Phillies were using him in full innings, even some multiple innings last last year, so he's had some success against RH hitters, too.
