The Thunderbird Destroyers select Cody Allen RP

The kid has a plus fastball that hits the upper 90's and a plus power curve. He throws strikes and he's fearless. He was unhittable in his short time below AAA, and still put up great numbers when he reached that level. He's a converted starter from college and has already had TJ surgery. He's likely the Indians closer of the future but I'll take him and insert him as another guy who can step in and set up or close for me if needed. He's only 24 which fits well with the rest of my team. His walk rate went up last year in his cup of coffee in the bigs but I'm not overly concerned by it. I think that'll regress as he gets more experience.

I hate you. I took Grilli over Allen thinking there was no way anyone else would pay attention to him given his lack of draft pedigree or hype. Nice pick.

Ok sorry for the delay. Unfortunate timing as I said.

I have been following this guy for a bit and I'm suspiciously surprised he's still around. He's a young plus-defence catcher with probable league-average offense. He's the guy who's going to steal playing time, in real life, from Jonathan Lucroy who was picked a long time ago in our draft.

On my team, Martin Maldonado will be taking that playing time from the unwanted and trade listed Brian McCann off the bench.

Ha! Thanks. I had the same thought you did, I figured no one had heard of him but I better grab him before someone digs enough to find out.

I'm on my phone, and I'll add more later, but with Grandal beginning the season with a 50 game suspension for being part of ARod's health club, I need an older catcher that can fill in to start the season and then provide decent backup for the next two years. The ScubaSquad selects:

David Ross, C, Bench

I love his walk rate and he adds some nice pop at the plate for a backup catcher. He fits into my team perfectly and will provide some good veteran prescence for Grandal as he develops further.

Ross isn't a bad pick at all. He won't kill you while you're waiting for Grandal to come back from his suspension.

Also Sydney I'll take McCann off your hands

I definitely want to start or participate in a second thread after this which is seperate from the excercise in which we can play around with a few trades. In that world, I'm definitely open to trading old mate.

I thought long and hard about taking David Ross with both of my last picks, but I just couldn't justify it with Wieters taking 135-140 starts. I think he's the best backup catcher in baseball.

Grandal's age plus suspension made Ross a perfect fit for me.  He won't kill my lineup for the first 50 games of the season.  Plus, Grandal is young so I don't need another young catcher to back him up.  I was surprised and delighted that Ross fell to me.  As long as I can get two seasons out of him I will be happy, but I can even see getting 4 since he is backing up and won't have the wear and tear of a starter.

Gonna roll the dice a bit here.

Scott Kazmir, RP

By all accounts he's been very impressive this spring. I doubt he'll ever get back to what he used to be, but it's easy to forget he's only 29 years old. I think he's a good bet to be a good-to-great left-handed reliever, or a backend starter. He'll have a chance to beat out Eovaldi, Lyles, Tillman, etc. for one of the final rotation slots, but I'll ticket him for the bullpen for now.

Wow, I was actually seriously considering taking him with my next pick.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!

On a more serious note though, I really think you reached here (weird to say that in round whatever we're in). He has done nothing for years and you're crossing your fingers based on a couple ST starts?
Yes, this is just as much at myself as it is at you.

Josh Collmenter, SP Arizona

First, we are not about to just cede the WARM, Collmenter has been subduing his true stache abilities since joining the D'Backs two years ago. He's been an effective swingman when not afflicted by ulcers (hopefully now under control). He can fill a rotation slot for me this season and slide into the bullpen later to provide long relief and spot starts.

Jed is up.

This round most of the picks have been RP. I guess time will tell, but are there really a lot of relievers out there whose ceiling/floor combo is clearly superior to Kazmir's, and who have a solid chance of being a capable #4 or #5?

You pretty much nailed my line of thinking too but I just think that you could've waited a round or so before picking him. His track record probably scared off a lot of people.

Keep the mustaches rolling.

Koji Uehara, RP

Some risk involved given health and age but a chance worth taking for one of the game's best relievers. Historically good K/BB rate. Dominates righties and lefties. It won't get much nastier than Uehara and Adams back to back with Cook bringing the heat right behind them. I'm hoping he can keep it going for another season or three as my team tries to take home the imaginary title.

I wanted at least one Sox player on my team and that pool is probably getting pretty shallow, so I'm happy to take Uehara now even though 7th inning man isn't my most pressing need. Regardless, this dude is a great fit for my roster.

Alright, I'm kind of fucking myself here as this guy can't really back up SS and unless Prado or Lombardozzi suddenly develop the ability to play SS competently, I have 3 guys now who can play 2nd pretty well but not SS.

But seriously, how can you not pick a guy who took a Verlander pitch to the nuts and lived to tell the tale?

His MiL stats are pretty much all over the place but the kid has power and some speed. He strikes out way to much for my taste but his wOBAs haven't been terrible. I also like that he can back up all 3 OF spots, flexibility is always nice.

Scoops, should I even bother PMing Andrew? I don't think waiting 24 hours again will really do any good, if he cared he would have picked by now it's not like he hasn't been online.

Call me the commissioner, and call this the "best interests of the game".

Andrew selects:
Chris Denorfia, BP

Denorfia is the lefty bashing part of the platoon with Seth Smith.

John Buck, C

Buck can actually catch, and he'll platoon with Lavarnaway in case the Ryan can't hack it.

Lavarnaway moved to BP.

Damnit, great pick DanoooME. He's still really good and his K/BB is great. He may only have a few seasons left in him, but he's proven and effective.

Yeah, Uehara & Betancourt are both really good picks. They only made it this far because of their age. Wouldn't count on either of them sucking over the next 2-3 seasons though and by that time you can always find anothe ace reliever.
