Rules: Every hitter with at least one plate appearance and pitcher with at least one batter faced in the MLB is available in this draft: UPDATE: Players are only eligible if they had at least 1 MLB plate appearance or batter faced no later than the end of the 2012 season. A small "Exception List" of players expected or likely to play a significant role in the MLB in 2013 follows the draft order section. 25 man rosters are set as C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3rd, LF, CF, RF, DH, 5 starting pitchers, at least 5 RPs and 5 bench players.

The Draft: The order of this draft has been determined randomly (names literally pulled out of a hat), and will follow a serpentine order. There is a 48 hour clock between picks, and each GM is responsible for PMing the following GM once they have made their selection. If a GM believes they will be unable to post their selection within that 48 hour window for whatever reason, they must submit a contingency pick either to myself, or to another poster. UPDATE: Following the conclusion of Round 9, the pick window will be dropped to 24 hours. They will be able to add their rationale for their selection at a later time, but steady progress in the draft is the most important point. Failure to post a selection or submit a contingency pick twice will result in the replacement of the GM with a "Taxi Squad" member.

How long does it take for Snod to type Mike Trout? I kid, I kid.

You know what, I'm not likely to go wrong with either player, but I'm actually going to go with Bryce Harper for the first pick. Trout is the sexier name right now and had the better season, but I'm not convinced he's a 30 home run a year player and an injury that saps his speed will hurt him more than it would hurt Harper.

So I'll go with the "controversial" first pick of...

Bryce Harper CF

I have to say I think I would've gone this way too. His power potential is a step above Trout, plus the reasoning above. Regardless, either one is probably going to give a better return than my number 1 overall pick of Pujols three years ago.

I am accepting applications for an Assistant GM by PM. You will, of course, be blamed by upper management for any poor picks you end up suggesting.

League chart is up. It'll look a little sparse and funky until we get into the 2nd round:
http://sumnerhayes.c...asy%202013.html

As a reminder:
Please specify what position you're playing a selection at. You can always tell me to move them later. I guessed at CF for Bryce (no problemo), but as things unfold it's easier if I don't have to go look at your team and try to figure out who's a 1B vs DH or what corner of the OF is open or whatever.

Also, like Scoop said please PM the next person in line after you make your pick to help keep things moving.

Giancarlo Stanton, LF RF

edit: I'm pretty sure the 1992 version of Giancarlo could hit it farther than Punto. As far as why I picked him first, he's all of 23, hits the ball a country mile, and will anchor my lineup for the next 10-15 years, especially with the DH as an option..

Damn this is robotic. You guys dont want to pimp your guys, talk up your team? Put in some nonsense about them anchoring your lineup for years to come, making women swoon?!?

With the 4th pick in the 1st round, my team (still to be named) selects:

Buster Posey, C

A 25 year old stud catcher and reigning NL MVP. Last year he put up a .406 wOBA (4th in baseball), while playing stellar defense and he still has not reached his peak years. Taking a catcher here is a bit risky due to the wear and tear caused by the position, but if it works out he should anchor my team for years to come.

I am going to take a player who is already great, plays a premier defensive position and, I believe, has his best years yet to come.

Andrew McCutchen, CF

The last couple of guys have done it, but it makes things much much easier to follow if you post a picture of your player when you pick them.

Also, I much preferred having the 2nd pick last time to the 24th this time. May Mike Trout be better to you than Hanley Ramirez was to me, DanoooME.

I love doing this a second time precisely because of how bad I was at it the first time. I look at my pick of McCutchen and I think, 'there is no effing way that doesn't look awesome in five years.' But there is plenty of effing way and that's what is so fun.

But, I think this draft is going to depress the hell out of me vis a vis the Red Sox.

Agreed Drocca. I did a lot of hand wringing last time about Sizemore vs Mauer and figured I would take Sizemore because Mauer would be the one to breakdown. Whoops.

Sizemore was SO freaking sexy last time around. Actually, he's a great comp for McCutchen this time.

I'm certainly concerned about taking a catcher who has already suffered a major injury early in his career. Had a few safer picks lined up but decided it was worth the risk.

Sizemore was. He had established himself as a 5-6 WAR 4 seasons in a row. He was ridiculous. His complete disintegration was ridiculous too. We talk about players falling off of cliffs, but the metaphor is particularly apt with Sizemore. It was completely out of the blue too, though some insane internet hermit will claim to have predicted it. McCutchen has his advantages over Sizemore, having demonstrated an ability to hit for a great average, but it would seem that chances for McCutchen to get injured are the same as they were for Sizemore. Great pick.

Well, having drafted a catcher who has been downed by injuries and terribleness last time (Geovany Soto :smith: :smithicide:) Posey is the kind of catcher you go for. A batting title, patience, power, defensive skills. He is exceedingly well rounded and heading into his prime. He wasn't going to last that much longer anyway.

Bah, pick 16, just about smack in the middle of the draft, and just about my least-favorite spot to be in. Frankly would prefer to be at the bottom, since I like having picks close to each other. Sure, it means picking a bit earlier, but then it means waiting for like 30 picks before my next one.
Ah well, some good picks so far, and have a couple of ideas for what I might be doing. Certainly plenty of time to think about it, both beforehand, and during the window if necessary. Should be fun.

Hell yes.

The black wind begins to blow. OK, give me your best shot... If you're prepared for the void!
I can't even begin to count the amount of times I've played through that game. Even tossed together a little guide for it like eight years back, which is up on various places online. It's not necessarily the best guide out there, missing a bunch of useful stuff (stats and lists and such), but, it was just something else for me to do with a game that I am absolutely in love with.

Sorry to sidetrack the thread, just kind of biding time until the next pick I guess.

With the number 6th pick overall I'm going pitching first.

Clayton Kershaw

I'd post a long explanation for why but I'm on my phone and wanted to get my pick in before I go out to dinner.

Response edit: I would have posted a picture but I can't figure out how to do so on my phone

I feel a run on pitching coming...
[/quote]

Maybe, but I really don't think that is the keystone. Last time there wasn't a huge amount of pitching gone in the first round. And if there is, I think it a bit silly. There aren't a lot of pitchers that are as consistent as the best position players. There are plenty of those around.

Edit - Also, keep the pictures coming. It's as easy as a Google image search.

I've deliberated, and deliberated, and deliberated. I've grasped at straws, I've picked nits, I've typed, I've deleted, I've typed. I've deleted. Finally, I'm going to select a player that most of us hate. I hate him too, but he is a premier all-around talent at a very important position.

He is both a Leader of Men and Just One of the Guys, a Clutch Performer and a Haver of Fun. He's entering his age 27 season so he's really about to start fucking shit up. Oh how we shall hate him.

I am proud to select the heir apparent to the title of Captain Intangibles, Evan Longoria, 3B.

His girlfriend is invited to spend every game in the GM's suite.

And if she refuses I'll withhold Evan's paycheck.

That's true, and my thought was since there are few pitchers who are consistent, as soon as one came off it was going to be like dominoes.

It's not often the best hitter in the majors drops to #8 overall, but when he does I have to draft him.

Miguel Cabrera, Triple Crown Winner, come on down.

EDIT: Have not designated a position because of his flexibility. Or, more accurately, his lack of flexibility on defense makes me hopeful he'll be our DH but he might be our 1b or our 3b, depending on how things go from here.

There are more sexy options out there but I figured I'd play it relatively safe with my first-rounder.

Ryan Braun, LF

Elite hitter, provides value on the basepaths, not 30 yet, and has even turned it around with the glove over the past few years.

This was difficult because there are lots of very good players left, but no outstandingly awesome and young like Harper, Trout, Posey, or Kershaw. And I had to decide how I wanted to build my team. Ultimately my decision came down to Joey Votto or David Price. One is a middle the order masher who, last year, walked more than he struck out. The other is an ace left-handed starting pitcher.

Votto is a true elite player in my eyes. He has only hit under .300 once his career, when he his .297 as a 24 year old in his first full season in the majors. Since player full time, he's had an OBP under .400 only once, and that came in that same season. I also haven't mentioned that he's never slugged below .500. His home run total was low last year (14), but that was due to his inability to remain healthy. His contact rates are above 75%, and when the ball is thrown in the zone, well, that jumps into the low to mid 80s. Defensively, he's not bad either. Votto isn't Adrian Gonzalez elite, but he nabbed himself a gold glove in 2011, and the fan's scouting report gives him average to above average marks. He will be 29 almost all of next year, but will turn 30 when my team is wrecking the league in the playoffs. He isn't that young, but because of his elite on base skills and doubles power he will be a fixture in the middle of the Scuba Squad's order for another 4-5 years.

However, given that Votto is approaching 30, and good hitting first basemen are not a rare commodity, I think the Scuba Squad will be best served by having David Price atop its rotation. For starters, Price is coming off a Cy Young year and is only 27 years old. He won't turn 28 until the Scuba Squad is gearing up for its playoff run next August.

Outside of his age and handedness, the last three seasons Price has averaged 32 starts a year and 215IP per year. He's a workhouse. Over that same time span, his 3.04 K/BB ratio is above average, and only brought down because in 2010 it was a 2.38. The last two seasons he has produced 3.46 and 3.47, respectively. But what I really like was how he transformed himself into a ground ball pitcher in 2012. His GB% went from 41.5%, 43.7%, and 44.3% to 53.1%. His FB% went from 39.4%, 39.6%, 36.9% to 27%.

Outside of Kershaw, Price is the guy I want to start big games for my club the next 5 years. He throws hard, strikes out 3 times as many batters as he walks, is a workhorse, and gets ground balls. He has a three year track record to prove it too. I like going with an ace pitcher when one is available, especially one who is young and getting better. Price should serve as my #1 for the next 4-5 years, and maybe even longer.

I'd be interested to know why you didn't consider Matt Kemp, Felix Hernandez (younger than Price, extremely durable--did the pitchers' park and easier division factor into it?) or Stephen Strasburg (more of a track record of domination at the highest level than Harper or Trout, though I'd imagine the injury history scared you off) for that pick.

Neither of those guys are lefties either. While that didn't factor that much into my decision, Kershaw is a top 5 pitcher in the game at 24, it could've been why he chose Price

Guys, as a general rule please don't discuss players who have not been drafted yet. This is less of an issue right now, because everyone pretty much knows all the big names, but as we move deeper into the draft it could become a problem. Perhaps around the start of Round 3 or 4 we should institute a "no discussion of available players" rule?

Anytime you take a pitcher in the first round, it's going to be nerve-wracking, but I can't pass up Felix Hernandez at #11.

He's still only 26 years old and arguably the best pitcher in the American League year in year out. And he's getting better too. He had a career high K/BB ratio of 3.98 this past season. King Felix will lead my squad for years to come etc. etc.

My bad. I think we should probably institute this near the end of the first round, if not right now. Plenty of time to discuss other options someone could have gone with once they're off the board, which I expect all the players we've talked about will be soon enough.

With the 12th pick of the first round, The Master Batters select
Justin Verlander, probably the most consistently excellent pitcher in the game right now.

I love the difference 4 years make. Comparing the top 12 picks between the two drafts, only two players were selected in both years in the top 12: Evan Longoria and Ryan Braun. Longoria was selected #5 overall last draft and #7 this draft. Braun was selected #7 overall last draft, and #9 overall this draft.

With the 13th pick I have to go with Stephen Strasburg SP. Put up a ridiculous 11.13 K/9 and a 4.10 K/BB in 159 innings pitched last year and he's only 24. Hopefully the leash comes off this year and he shows no signs of fatigue as the year goes on. Lockdown ace of my team for the next 10 years. Debated on going offense here but pitchers like this are few and far between.

That's a touch earlier than I expected a run on starters, but I guess it's not that crazy. Here's hoping one of the three guys at the top of my list falls to me!
