I am so often behind watching on DVR that I don't check the game thread unless I don't mind events being possibly blown. Tonight I am into the game, but also I wanted to game thread, so every time I want to make a comment, I pause it, write it down, and then go back to the game. Here it all is belatedly:
=============
NY comes really close to knocking out Gilbert in the first, if Volpe takes ball 4 on 3-2 instead of swinging over it, Gilbert has to face Trevino already at 38 pitches and generally managers pull pitchers after a 40 pitch inning, even before the pitch clock.
Jeff Nelson is not dumb but he says a lot of things that are just wrong. You can do better, YES.
Oof, Anthony. Volpe is lucky that Cabrera is somehow outsucking him so far this season. Other news for no reason at all: Peraza hit another HR tonight in AAA and made a sparkling play on a dribbler up the middle.
Volpe makes the play to end the inning so it only cost Nestor a few pitches, but a bad first inning for our boy Tony.
Love old Dave Winfield highlights, he was my favorite Yankee ever for a long time. He is the main reason I followed Judge so closely after he was drafted and now Spencer Jones, I am a big fan of gigantic Thor-like batters, the same reason 29 other fan bases fantasized about somehow trading for Stanton until NY actually did.
Good job, Gleyber, two clean hits in two innings.
NY clearly doesn't want to give up a chance at Volpe winning Rookie of the Year and getting them an extra first round pick and the extra slot amount that comes with that, and to possibly win that, the player has to be up for the full season. But it's getting close to where they are not only going to have to send down Cabrera for Donaldson (next few days), but also flip Volpe and Peraza, Volpe could play everyday in AAA and try to get into a groove there. Peraza is better defensively and has always been better defensively (Volpe is fine if Peraza did not exist but he does, and is on the 40 man) and he is raking in AAA, .999 OPS when I checked earlier.
Good job by Gilbert to get Judge to swing over a curve in the zone at 3-2, he could not afford to walk him there as the pitch count is in danger territory again, 57 through 2 now.
Jeff Nelson is fine when he sticks to things he is sure about but he has that A-Rod/Smoltz thing where they try to impress the audience by just continuing to talk and sound authoritative whether or not they actually have any clue. No one expects you to know everything, you know plenty and you will have plenty of time to share that, take a breath. Maybe drink less coffee?
Wow, that is twice in three innings that IKF did a great job getting to second base when most players would not have been able to, on the throw home in the first and tagging there when the throw went to third.
Even though these notes are only on my computer for now, Volpe heard me! All is forgiven, young man, more of that, please.
Whoever scouted SEA for NYY for this series, give them something extra in the next paycheck.
77 pitches for Gilbert through 3 and 6 runs allowed, I think normally that would be it but SEA used their good relievers a lot over the weekend and two of their back end guys yesterday for multiple innings so we'll see.
Nestor looking great through 3, 3 more innings like that please.
Greg Allen! I was just thinking how he seems like a quality bench player, like the Jeter/Rivera dynasty Yankees always seemed to have. Good pickup by Cashman, funny that they got him from BOS although BOS had no room for him.
Wow, some dude in the front row caught the Allen HR barehanded and didn't even flinch, how many beers do you have to have had to not feel that?
Gott in to start the 5th, SEA bullpen is going to have to cover five innings again, we might get a position player pitching tonight if NY can keep this onslaught going (7-0 now).
IKF with the Bader-like backing up footwork in LF to get behind the throw!! Oh man I love that.
The pitch clock has to be affecting Nestor, he again loses it the third time in the order (tonight in the 5th), 7-2 now.
Come on, Nestor, one more out.
Wow as bad a check swing strike call as you will ever see on King's first batter, not even close to a swing. No wonder the batter and manager lost it and both got ejected, yikes.
That almost looked like someone in the crowd yelled and Judge thought it was Allen and pulled up, Allen was nowhere near really. King got out of it though, good job.
Hahaha, Judge leading off and I think to myself 'strange, he hasn't homered yet today'. First pitch boom.
IKF! A lot of people eating a lot of words these last few weeks, me too.
Nice play DJ!! King is not his best self but through two scoreless.
IKF again! I was just thinking before that 4th hit that he actually finally has the bat control he has been famous for but not actually had, wow.
NY into double figures for the third straight game, I bet it's been a while since that's happened. Maybe releasing Hicks scared all these guys.
