Are listeners interested at all in the gambling talk? Also, does anyone care about Dave Richards and fantasy football? I’ve never understood the appeal of either.
Not just you. I didn't find it interesting when Eddie Andelman talked gambling, and don't think it's interesting now. My nephew works at DraftKings, I'm curious how his generation feels about this stuff?

I work with a few 25-30 year olds who love the apps but couldn’t care less about listening to people talk about it

Gambling has always been a huge driver of sports interest. It's also incredibly boring to people who don't actually bet. Fantasy sports were basically a stand-in when sports gambling wasn't as legal in as many places as it is now. I remember a time in my life when I cared about my fantasy teams, but I didn't care enough to listen to other people talk about theirs. I'm curious about what the actual percentage numbers of listeners are interested or bored by gambling or fantasy talk, but I guarantee you that the pro-gambling fans are much more "active" and vocal about their interest than the uninterested are about their disinterest.

Plus, there is money to be made off of the gambling interested, so that makes them a "key demographic" crowd.

I couldn’t care less about any gambling segment, but I like Dave Richard. He’s pretty quick on his feet and I like hearing people who know their shit talk.

I don’t mind fantasy talk too much when they actually have an expert on.
gambling talk by two Kowloon regulars? No thanks.

funny enough, I’ve found fantasy talk to be a decent informer for gambling. If their guru is talking up a few players as must starts or whatever, I’ve had good success betting the over on that players rushing / receiving yards or catches.

Agree about Richard. He’s a good listen and the segment moves briskly.

It really all comes down to talent. If the guest is good then just about any segment can work. If not… woof.

I used to really enjoy the Bankroll Boys, when it was two dudes talking about “illegal” gambling. No one aside from them was taking it seriously and it was fun.

Ever since Mass legalized sports betting their segment became a slog. Went on for way too long, and it became apparent neither knew what the hell they’re talking about (certainly no more than your high school buddy who’s been betting for years).

Agreed on Richard - I don't particularly care about fantasy outside of my own team - but he's been a regular enough guest to have developed a good rapport with T&R.

I remember they used to take listener calls during his segment and it was an absolute garbage fire.

it wasn’t okay for a 3am on a Tuesday morning in hell.

It was, by far, the worst sports show I’ve ever heard.
That seems like an overly harsh assessment. Craig being a Yankees fan while hosting a show in Boston was kind of fun. They didn't take themselves seriously at all and had plenty of "celebrity" callers like Frank from Gloucester.

YMMV but I absolutely hated this show. And celebrity callers aren’t a selling point, especially Frank from Gloucester. That guy was a complete bozo.

I felt bad for Fred listening to him talk about the Jets and Wilson. All he wants is something not awful to watch and can’t quit them. It’s got to be tough watching one of the worst QBs in history weekly.

I laughed during the transition to Mark Daniels from Masslive after they were talking about how the network thought naming the main character on the 70s Incredible Hulk TV show "Bruce" would be too gay.

Daniels: that gives a whole new meaning to "Hulk smash"!

What's even funnier is that Bruce was already Banner's middle name, because Stan Lee had such a bad memory he referred him as Bob Banner a few times, and readers caught it and wrote in about it. His excuse was that Banner's real name was Robert Bruce Banner, but he went by Bruce. Stan was writing dialogue for so many comics, he couldn't remember much of anything from one issue to the next, and I don't think he really cared that much. Which is why everyone has alliterative names, so he could remember them more easily (Peter Parker, Reed Richards, etc.). So they already could have called him Robert or Bob, but maybe those weren't not-gay enough for the producers.

Strong "Armpits of America" segment in the 8 o'clock hour this morning. Won't ruin the surprise for folks who have not listened yet, but I'll just say there was feces and DA Voice involved.

Listening to the Bankroll....bunch.....and Lifshatz is arguing with Fred that losing Grayson Allen is a huge loss for the Bucks. He went from "the deal is terrible for the Bucks" to "ok I guess they got a little better"

Fred will spend the rest of the show mocking him and the take.

Lifshatz knows less than the majority of my friends and myself. How did he even get in a position to be on the radio occasionally? Was it just being friends with Murray? I genuinely don't understand it at all.

The best was citing Lillard‘s cousin as clear evidence that the Miami package was better than the Bucks package. The dude’s a complete fool and Fred’s repeated mocking brought me joy.

Right like who cares what Dame's cousin thinks? He probably just wanted to live in Miami himself, not visit cold Milwaukee. It literally means absolutely nothing.

So I know less than nothing about this. Is Lifshatz paid for this? He seemed pretty frustrated at the end and I'm sure he knew Fred was mocking him the entire broadcast (for those who didn't listen, Fred literally brought it up with like other guests who didn't get the reference)

At some point he may just say F it and not go in....

Yeah, he's paid. They have mentioned it before. It's time for the Bankroll "Bunch" segment to go. Fred clearly doesn't like Dan, and I think the feeling might be mutual. And I'm not sure Kendra adds brings more to the table. The whole segment just creates for awkward and terrible radio.

If nothing else, Dan's insane takes and unwillingness to ever admit he's wrong keeps Fred engaged for the interview and he gets content out of it weekly. I don't mind it as much as you all seem to, but I can definitely see the perspective. For Dan, I'm not sure there's much better ways he can get name recognition (for whatever that's worth) than on T&R. Having Fred unpack the Grayson Allen take was hilarious whereas Rich just doesn't dig into stuff that much usually.

That's because Rich doesn't follow sports. He probably had no clue what team Grayson Allen was on, or if he was in the NBA, until today's segment

I think the segments awesome. Fred's fascination with Dan makes the entire segment worth while and Fred not letting it go and brining Allen up to other guests was great. Kendra's fine, I like her better in non-gambling segments on weekends personally.

Dan is convinced that a guy like Grayson Allen is an incredibly valuable piece for a winning team. I dont think its a bit, he really believes it. Thats insane for someone who, by all accounts, watches a lot of sports because of gambling interests. For all of Joe Murrays' faults, he does actually know sports and can craft a good "take" sometimes.

I am sure Allen will be an NBA player for a long time, but man, you're replacing him with DAMIAN LILLARD.

Dan is like a sitcom character that comes in for one scene, does his joke, and everyone gets a good laugh. As mentioned, it adds fuel for Fred to riff on for hours. A lesser program may just let it go and keep it contained to the one segment. Dan provides a lot of material.

Fred, if you're reading, do a Shootin' the Breeze segment of just Dans' worst opinions.

Well see, Grayson Allen sucks, but he's valuable depth. Jae Crowder also sucks, but he's useless depth.

This brings me back to Bob Ryan complaining that the '08 Celtics didn't have enough depth going into the season. Sure, they won the championship, but the Lakers were better from players 9-15. So who was the better team, really?

If Dan had said the trade left Milwaukee too thin because more players left than came back, that would have been a more well thought out take than lamenting the loss of Grayson Allen

I think Lifshatz bases all of his takes on some dark web betting crap. If a guy doesn't move the odds by more than a game he "sucks". I'm completely making this up, but all of his hot takes seem to come back to some betting agenda.

Rich is on an epic and amazingly poignant rant about what a despicable a-hole Curt Schilling is.

His anger is palpable.
Look forward to it. They are usually good about getting the podcasts up quickly, but not yet.

Exactly what Schilling wants, probably. Otherwise nobody gives a fuck about what he has to say.
In his ‘wisdom’ Schilling also launched into yet another well thought through antisemitic tilt this week.

Sadly there is a well cultivated audience and set of platforms for people like him. Fwiw I think he is reality-immune and doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong…what with his deeply held ‘Christian’ beliefs and all (and fwiw as I’ve mentioned in another thread I do believe In power of prayer).

I get it, but this was deeply personal for Rich, given his experience with Mary's battles with cancer. As much as no one wants to give Schilling attention, I think Rich ripping him a new one in this instance was well warranted.

Also fun to note that they relayed a story from a longtime beat reporter (I'm blanking on who it was) who said that in all his years covering the biggest jerks in the sport -- from John Rocker, to Albert Belle, to Barry Bonds -- that no one was more hated in their own clubhouse than Curt Schilling.

That's interesting that they said that because Massarotti was talking about Schilling last night on the Baseball Show and he said that when he was a beat reporter in the locker room, his thoughts was that Schilling was the type of guy who had an opinion on everything (which was annoying) but that he was generally a good guy, who always had his teammates' backs and was okay. He followed up by saying what happened between his last pitch and now where Schilling has turned into a complete fucking dick (my words) is puzzling. He has no idea why or how this happened.

What happened is he retired and now has an unlimited amount of hours to go down internet rabbit holes.

I forget what the definition of this is called but he strikes me as a person who believes they are the smartest person in the room and infallible but in reality they are quite unintelligent. Ever now and then I peek at his twitter account and it's just him arguing with strangers over & over & over for hours on end and he never budges an inch. I mean, how many times in a week do you think or say "you know that's a good point, hadn't thought of it that way"? This guy? Never.

edit: I also loved Rich's point of being sick of people doing shitty things then saying "but God". Amen, brother.

Didn’t Schilling talk shit on Scott Williamson’s efforts even though the guy ended up being injured?

Yeah. Definitely. His Philly teammates also called him "red light" or something like (which is what the Mets called Gary Carter). I'm not saying that he was the most popular guy in the locker room--and people can be complicated--but I'm just saying that Mazz said he wasn't like how he is now. Also, I'm not defending Schilling. Fuck that guy. Forever.

Nothing beats Phillies GM Ed Wade's description of Schilling: "a horse every fifth day and a horse's ass on the other four."
