It's bad. Today his hot take was that Hanley only hit the home run because he was DH and not in left field. They seem to be giving him a segment or 2 each day to rant on the Red Sox. I get that it's kind of a sports dead time and there are only so many non-sports segments you can do every day, but this is not the answer.

Although they could play entire hours of the Paul Finebaum show with T&R doing commentary and I would listen. That stuff is hilarious
It really should be Fed's segment, he's not even a sox fan and knows more about the team and baseball in general than the entire station. Dude is sharp when it comes to this stuff and I get the impression he has to play dumb for the audience, which sucks.

Funny, I thought it was awesome, and I typically can't stand Wallach.

He said just about everything I was thinking and seems genuinely pissed off about the team and the season.
I'm definitely frustrated too but I disagree about the genuine part of it. I think there has been a concerted effort on his part the last couple of weeks to be the "angry Red Sox guy" on the show. As soon as I checked Twitter last night and saw 500 tweets in a row from him with all this anger directed toward the Red Sox I knew it'd take up at least two segments today. As someone said above, he really missed his chance pre-2004. He could've had a nice role spewing all this nonsense on a documentary about THE CURSE with CHB.

Ironically, Fred also became angry after tweets and texts were bashing his devil's advocate schtick against Wallach by standing up for Farrell and Fred's apparent belief that a manager means next to nothing in baseball.

Before this past weekend I thought Wallach's griping was over the top and premature.  But when you're 7 games under and on the precipice of having the season spiral into oblivion, I think it makes for good radio.

I realized recently that I haven't listened to 98.5 programming in weeks. I think T&R has grown a little repetitive and tired and F&M has become too formulaic and predictable to enjoy anymore. Hot takes = just a bunch of trolling. Fun for a while, but it got boring and without even realizing it I've stopped listening.

T&R remains by far my favorite talk radio program, especially with the BS Report on hiatus until he signs with a new media company. I think part of why they are a little slower lately is the complete lack of Boston sports news for them to deal with. They really thrived during the Bruins runs, and without them in it, this time period seems dead. Still, I think they're great.

I haven't listened to F&M in ages though. I've made the switch over to Dale and Holley and my drives during that time period are so much more peaceful and enjoyable. F&M blows.

As a parent, I was laughing my ass off when Fred was talking about playing with trains this morning and called himself "Sir Frederick Hatt". :p

It's that time of year. There's nothing going on in Celtics world, Bruins are keeping Claude and there's not much coming out of that camp, Deflategate is completely dead, how much can you talk about OTAs, and that leaves the Red Sox. There's a lot going on with the Sox but it's not the most compelling radio to fill 4 hours.

I've been listening to a lot more Dale and Holley though. As F&M is:
1- Deflategate, just admit you did it before, you made it worse. Rinse and repeat.
2- Celtics - shitty NBA talk
3- Bruins - how can they keep Claude? He's can't adapt! Blah blah blah
4 - Red Sox - They suck, suck suck suck.

What were you going to say 8slim? I always enjoy your opinion. I hate when people start to write something then just write nm. Makes me curious what you were thinking and why you stopped writing..

Shoot, I bought Dirk Hayhurst's first book after hearing him on the show this morning

I bought his latest book and it's pretty good. Unfairly or not, I kept comparing him to Jim Bouton and while he didn't live up to that comparison (which, I don't think many can) it was a cool look at what it's like to be a baseball player. You will probably enjoy it.

I don't care that it makes me juvenile, LEBRON'S PENIS is a terrifically funny gag and I've giggled every time they've whipped it out.

What parts were surprisingly good? Esoteric was nice, especially in the first verse, but Adolfo sucks at everything.

I think he performed about how the average person would - freestyle rapping for an audience isn't easy.  He got out understandable English words and even occasionally rhymed them.  I expected much less, something on par with his game-calling skills.

Maybe I should have kept listening. I thought it would be such awkward radio and Adolfo would end up coming off so poorly that I changed it.

you are 100% justified in changing the channel anytime Adolfo comes on.  I'm surprised it's not an automatic channel change for everyone.  99% of the bits with him or time when they bring him into the booth are just beyond terrible.  They needed to lose the Adolfo shtick years ago.

Yea, this has turned into podcast week for me, which is nice, but much less amusing than T&R. Vacation crew sucks, and Wallach's turdness is on full display without Fred and Rich around.

I didn't listen this morning but yesterday it was Johnson and Flynn which is worlds better than Tanguay and anybody.

It really makes for bad radio when Trenni is on with Rich. Not because of her, but because of how Rich is with Trenni, He spent the entire time I was in the car this morning talking about her dating, creepy guys talking to her on Twitter, and trying to set her up with  that Harvard MBA guy.

I beg to differ. I enjoy the show when there's no smug Fred to make it seem he's too bothered to do a job he's well compensated to do in the mornings. Trenni brings a different light to the show. I wouldn't it if she replaced Wallach.

The issue is just Rich. He's not the guy to lead a show. he's outstanding at what he does, but when thrust into another role he's only OK. It's not a bad thing, you throw me into another job in my company i'm not going to perform up to the normal guy who does it everyday.

In terms of this comment: I don't ever think he's too bothered or seems annoyed by it. he seems to be very grateful where he is in the world of radio and doesn't take it for granted. outside of counting down to vacation time I'm not sure why you'd think he's too bothered.

I know she's been on before, and Fred's on vacation, but fuck, that was awful radio. "Can I be your pimp? We'll just do one date for $10 grand. So let's get this guy on and set you up. Do you have a boyfriend? I want $10k, let's do this and negotiate. Money, money!!!" As for the comment about Fred being smug, isn't that like, part of his thing? He doesn't seem ungrateful to me, just very deadpan and not really giving a fuck about pandering to people. I'd switch to podcasts full time if Trenni had any real role on the show because it was unlistenable.

What is it about people in the sports media and women? They talk to a female and they turn into 13-year-old boys, even the best of them.

It's fucking bizarre, man.

I concur. I love Rich, he's a terrific person and producer but today with Trenni was cringeworthy.

I don't think it's her. If she were to replace Wallach I think it could be great. Her and Fred have great chemistry, similar to his with Dan Roach. He isn't creepy at all, they have a similar sense of humor, and seems truly fascinated by both of them and it makes for good radio. I really like Trenni and think she would fit in well with the show.

But I agree with others. I've been going to podcasts all this week because Rich just isn't suited to lead the show. The few times I tuned in today were cringe worthy. Although I happened to catch her comments on Jenny Dell and Will Middlebrooks and it was pretty interesting.

This is exactly what i was referring to. The issue isn't Trenni. The issue is how guys on the radio (unfortunately it was Rich in this case) get around women who are at all attractive. It makes me sad to see Rich act like that on the radio, and it's bad radio to boot.

Probably because it's such a boys club and these guys get away with being sexist dolts.  I mean the day after the USA-Germany WWC match someone I was listening to on 98.5 said something to the effect of "...and did you see that German goalie?  Whoa!".  A comment like that is not appropriate in today's corporate America, but it's part-and-parcel of sports talk radio.

These are good points, and I unfairly pointed to Trenni as the problem, partially due to the fact that she's a guest and not a regular host, when it was all Rich who made that morning awful. I did feel bad for her, and she tried to cut it off in a nice way when she mentioned she was seeing someone, but it was just unrelenting. I love T&R, but Rich is definitely just not suited for the role he's in when Fred is out.

The debate about negativity that ended in Dan's plea to just enjoy the game, while Forrest Gump music swirled in the background, was spectacular.

The 40 minutes that I listened to this morning was awful. Ninety percent of that time was devoted to Adolpho and the remaining time was UFC crap. I found myself settling on D&C but those guys (Ordway in for Dennis) spent a lot of their time navel gazing too.

I get that it's July and things are slow, but I don't care about Adolpho. I don't care about the latest manufactured EEI feud. Talk about anything other than yourselves, please.

Fred's annual "summer vacation rant" was pretty funny, but yeah, the show took a bit of a nosedive after.

I'm thinking with baseball on hiatus, all Boston sports radio is on partial standby mode until Goodell's announcement on Brady's appeal comes out this week.

Then: let the "hot takez" begin!!
