Pats had to draw the line somewhere I suppose.  in Bill I trust, but I'm surprised they didn't match $40MM.  Maybe there were other aspects of the deal that they couldn't/ wouldn't match, such as non-guaranteed money in year 1 that would surely be paid.
where is it that it was 40MM?  no numbers have been released and this is pure speculation.

Felger has his ammo until we are in San Francisco next year, eh?

Didn't help Woody tampered and Goodell is going to do nothing about it

His blind Scientology-like loyalty towards that organization is bizzare.
He has loyalty to one thing. Can't begrudge the best in the game getting his, but the Jets have no magical sway here.

Oh well. We were lucky to have him one season, and he was fortunate to have us. He banged the hot chick and it was everything he ever dreamed of, but now he has to go back to his rich ugly wife.

It's not the patriots so the NFL gives no shuts about the tampering charge

I'd probably be really pissed off about this if the Super Bowl had ended differently. But it ended with the Patriots hoisting Lombardi number 4 and that makes this far less painful. We got him to help win a championship and that's what happened. This doesn't change that.

@AdamSchefter: While specifics of Darrelle Revis' deal are uncertain, this much is not: it will make him the highest-paid CB in NFL history.

I think the combination of the Jets overpaying Revis plus his return to NYC as a hero leading GG back to a possible return to glory outweighs the uncertainty of a new GM and coach, the certainty of Butthead Johnson, and the possibility of adding another ring with BB and Brady.

I think this one is mostly about the $.

I hope I'm wrong.

I share the disappointment but not the anger.

We knew when we signed him, going in, that his primary loyalty is to the currency.

We knew the option would never be picked up.

We hoped he would help bring a SB.

We were damn fortunate in that he helped bring a SB.

These swing-for-the- fence signings rarely pan out, but our's did.

Why the hatred?

Not really seeing that. Most of us seem to be on the side of economics and not blaming Revis for being a mercenary in the NFL.

We got the ultimate prize out of having him with us. Would have been nice to try for a second ring with him, but the Patriots move on as always.

Oh, cut the shit. There were a few floated rumors out there that he would be willing to take less from the Patriots, but hes made a career out of never taking a penny less. It's not about "coming close". They would have had to beat it.

Seriously the Jets should have to swap firsts. This is blatantly tampering
That tweet is referencing the FA compensation the Pats will get, not a tampering penalty.

What the hell did the Patriots come in at?
That's basically 48 guaranteed unless he suffers a career ending injury.

A 30yo CB getting 40M guaranteed for injury and performance, with 48M coming in the first 3y, that's an unprecedented deal for his position.

He's all but a shoe-in to make almost 50M in his age 30, 31 and 32 years.  Unless you play quarterback you are almost never going to see that kind of deal this late in a career.

Hard to not be impressed with Revis the businessman.

This should increase the tampering compensation. Silver linings......

Seriously.  Probably the largest contracts at his position in history...only 5 hours after the start of free agency?  You'd think that the Jets would at least TRY to pretend there wasn't anything nefarious going on.

I'm fully aware. I'm reinforcing that it's not enough and the Jets are going to get away with this because the Pats are the modern day Raiders in the NFL eyes.

What's the Pats walk-away # on Revis?

For sake of debate lets assume the Pats are thinking something like a 5/65+  with about 3/40 guaranteed (including about $25M in up-front bonus $)

Revis kicks the market and can get 5/70 (14MM AAV)

Is Revis worth the extra $1MM py?

Does either side budge?

How close do the Pats have to be to "comparable?
Nice call

I've been nothing but impressed by Revis, but, as Scott Boras will tell you, it helps immensely if there's an egomaniacal idiot with a fuckton of cash to spend in the vicinity.

re: tampering. Maybe the jets took a calculated risk that the penalty won't be a 1st rounder? That would really be the only "crippling" penalty. Anything else could be considered a small price to pay to insure they got their guy back
