Maybe, but he probably still would have given the Patriots more than Amendola has the past two years.
Like two clutch super bowl performances instead of one?

He'd also take snaps and targets away from Edelman, who at this point is the much better player.

This I agree to an extent, although the "big signing" that was Amendola didn't prevent Edelman from breaking out. The Patriots, perhaps more than most teams, are more willing to dump/sit high-priced talent for someone who has more potential (see Bledsoe, Brady).

Yeah, yeah.

Did you see Welker play this year?

Look, we can't know the counterfactual situation, but I think it's pretty clear that players like Welker and Edelman have abilities that are particularly suited for the Brady-led Patriots offense. And we can't know that he would have suffered the numerous concussions he suffered with the Broncos (although he was at increased risk).

Enjoy no QB, no Super Bowls and then retirement, #24. Looking forward to your "no regrets" interview down the line while wallowing in what might've been. Thank you, FOREVER, for ring #4.

In Bill I trust, but unless it's an outrageous deal I can't shake the feeling the Pats screwed the pooch on this one. There's nothing out there to keep level of play in the secondary from falling off a cliff. Of course, we have to wait and see the whole plan, but this isn't a great start.

A bunch of second and third rate guys--your sheards, harvins and rubins--and we'll be disappointed and somehow we'll end up 12-4 and in the AFC championship game again.

Yes. Every year the patriots are outstanding. With or without Revis. There is zero doubt in my mind that the patriots will be right at or near the top of the AFC next year. Of course I wanted Revis back. They are better with him then without him. But the New England Patriots will be a force next year.

Are any other all-pros getting released? Tough to get struck by lightning twice.

But now we get to speculate in earnest about the Jets' punishment for tampering.
Not to mention enjoying the Jets continue to suck while he eats up massive cap space...crazy contract for one of the worst teams in the NFL to agree to. Infuckingsane

Sounds like a lot of money and that's fine that they did not want to guarantee that much but the declining of Browners option looks really dumb right now. Had him locked in for a below market contract and decline it presumably to offer Revis more money. Now they have neither. Seems like a miscalculation on their part

Can't give any rational evaluation until we know the full details of the contract.  And ideally, know what the Pats' final offer was.

I would have been comfortable with a long-term AAV of $16, and pretty high guarantees, so the reported Jets details don't scare me.  But it's shitty speculation (not even informed speculation) until we know more.

He must also figure his opportunities for endorsements on a starless Jets team are through the roof.

Here
I don't get it. He wanted 40 over 3 years, Pats gave McCourty 28.5. I can't fathom why, even given the age difference. I don't think it's particularly great for the Jets either, given their QB situation, but they do have a lot of money.

Pats had to draw the line somewhere I suppose.  in Bill I trust, but I'm surprised they didn't match $40MM.  Maybe there were other aspects of the deal that they couldn't/ wouldn't match, such as non-guaranteed money in year 1 that would surely be paid.

I wonder if the Pats will blow through the division and make the AFC Championship/SuperBowl without him. Have they ever done that?
