I went rookies with my first two picks, and I feel strongly that was the way to go - with 12 protects, elite players are only really available through the draft. To this point, I've preferred higher ceiling to higher floor. This is the point in the draft, however, where I think the value calculation shifts. The top rookies left are either low-ceiling guys, or guys who are intriguing in certain areas but flawed in others. So the Ravens are going to call on down a young vet who still has terrific upside: Jared Odrick, DE/DT, Dolphins.

I had to check a few times to make sure Odrick was really available. A first-round pick in 2010, he's had at least 4.5 sacks each of his three full seasons in the NFL, while playing 3-4 DE (2011), 4-3 DE (2012), and 4-3 DT (2013). PFF hasn't always been a fan, but last year graded him at +17.2, 13th among DT (and 7th in pass-rushing among DTs). B/R rated him the #11 DT in 2013. At 26, he's got a lot of great football ahead of him.

We like to joke about ESC's "smokescreen," but I submit that my Ravens have the real smokescreen defense - Coples has played anything from DT to 3-4 OLB, Irvin can play OLB in a 3-4 or a 4-3 or 4-3 DE, Ngata can play anywhere along the D-line, etc. Odrick completes that picture with a prototypical 5-tech build (6'5" 302) and the flexibility to play several roles. The Ravens' D will be a base 3-4, but it can switch between even and odd fronts, vary who is rushing, and cause mayhem without compromising my run D, coverage, or pass rush. And with Ngata, Cofield, and now Odrick, I have a rotation of three interior guys who can penetrate and disrupt.

I'll expand: I don't like you now. But that's a damn good pick. Odrick was by far the top vet DL on my board. I also checked the spreadsheet a few times to make sure I wasn't missing something when I was putting my lists together. It's kind of hard to believe we all passed on him last year.

Yup. That's a hell of a pick, SN. Definitely adds a versatile and productive player to your front seven. We can argue the finer points of the Smokescreen defense later.

Malcolm Smith is a terrific pick. He should have gone in the first round of this draft.

Good pick. The AFC North is going to be spicy again this year.

Also why are we allowed to discuss draft strategy but not players, like Tim Tebow?

Indeed - shaping up to be the best division top-to-bottom again.

I think there are still a lot of value to be had in F.A. 2nd year+ vets, like Odrick (Daniels & others too). I got Cujo as I need a younger RT and he reminds me a lot of Tyron Smith when he first came into the league (less polished, athletic, ideally sized run blocker) but otherwise I'd have no problem dipping into the non-rookie pool.

And I think CJF sucks donkey balls.

You can discuss players, just not those who haven't been picked, because that would be a douchebag thing to do.

This might be a reach but my CBs are terrible.  The Texans select Trumaine McBride, CB.

Didn't really play much on defense until middle of last year but really came on at the end.  FO has him as the best charted CB of 2013 allowing only 3 passes over 16 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Here's what he had to say about his season:

There are numerous reasons why I feel last year went so much better. Coaching staff, defensive scheme, technique, offseason training, etc. Overall the Giants organization does a great job of getting the best out of players... Coach Fewell's defensive scheme is great and it fits my style of play. I'm more of a man corner vs zone. The majority of my career I was in a Cover-2 scheme... Coach Fewell has a Cover- 2 background but I wouldn't say we are a true Cover-2 defense. Perry has his own unique style.

Hopefully he duplicates his success with a full year as a starter.

EDIT: PM'd MMS, ElCab, and Proxy since I'm not sure who will be making the pick for MMS.

Nice pick Wake. I still don't understand why he dropped so far in the real draft and he's good value here too. I think you've got yourself a real good player to stick in the middle of your defense. I was giving serious thought to adding him in a couple of picks to play next to Star Lotulelei and tell everyone else on our defense to get after the QB.

BTW, you're building one hell of D line.

Chargers select:

Jack Mewhort, OL

After playing LT for Ohio State, he was drafted by the Colts and will slide over to LG, which is one of the huge holes I have in my line right now.  I love this guy's versatility to play anywhere on the line and the nasty streak he adds.  I'm glad to get him at this point, after there were quite a few others I was looking at on the line that had already been taken.

Probably not a bad idea.

Damn PBD. I thought I was going to get forced into going to So.Bend again. So close. I really wanted to pair Nix with his real life teammate Watt... Nice pick, man.

Any chance we could look into pausing for the holiday weekend? I'm going to be out camping all weekend and unable to make a pick.

If I'm in the minority feel free to keep chugging along.

Sorry, but I'm going to vote no on pausing the draft. The clock is 12 hours on the weekend to allow people extra time already. There are 11 picks until you're up, many of which will likely be made today. I'd be happy to take a list of 7 or 8 guys from you and proxy your pick while you're canoeing and whatnot. Even if you didn't send a list to proxy, there's a chance you wouldn't get skipped over anyway depending on when you get on the clock. At worst, you might miss out on a couple of players.

Saturnian got a PM last night before 11pm, so he's got until 1pm to make a pick. I'm ready to go after he picks and there are a number of guys picking after me who are very active in this thread. I think we can get the draft at least to a point where you can put together a short list we can proxy from.

I like the idea of PMing the guy in the on-deck circle too. Should help keep things moving.

The Saints select WR Donte Moncrief

We lost two WRs in the steal portion of the draft (Stevie Johnson and Reuben Randle) and poached one back (Lance Moore), but still need to add to add depth at the position. Moncrief provides a good blend of size and speed.

Cool. We've paused before for certain holidays so I thought I'd throw it out there. I think I'll get a pick in before but not everyone else might be so lucky.

The ElCab Dolphins select Justin Britt OT Seahawks

Britt was a bit of a surprise 2nd round pick by Seattle in this year's draft, but I've read a lot of positive reports coming out of the pacific NW. A lot of people feel he's going to be a Day 1 starter for the Super Bowl champs, making the move from LT in college to the right side in the pros, where his aggressive blocking should open up holes in the run game. He performed well last year when he went up against Clowney, has experience at every position along the OL, and plays with a mean streak.  There were a few veteran OL options I looked at, including another lineman from the same team, but I felt the upside with the young guy was worth taking the shot, especially with the rest of my line in good shape.

Britt now finishes off our OL.  Ryan Clady, Travis Frederick, Mike Pouncey, Larry Warford and now Justin Britt, with Brandon Brooks as interior depth. Our line is young, mean, and aggressive, both in the running and passing games. Add in a strong run-blocking TE in Dwayne Allen and we should be able to run the ball with success, even against top defenses and with Trent Richardson running the ball.

With Moncrief and Britt off the board (bastards) I guess I'll go to the other side of the ball.

The Patriots select Will Clarke DE, WVU

I was hoping the real life Pats would pick him up because he's more or less a Chandler Jones clone. I think it's fitting that I should take him here because he was the only one who gave our first round pick Zack Martin trouble at the Senior Bowl. The 6'6" 277 lb Clarke is a great overall player who excels at pass rushing. Here's what CBS had to say:

Possesses a rangy, athletic build with a broad wingspan. Good initial explosion off the snap. Can cross the face of left tackles, forcing them wide and creating gaps for stunting or blitzing teammates, as well as zip inside for an impressive counter-move. Shows some core flexibility to dip under the reach of pass-blockers and flashes good hand use to rip free from their grasp. Attentive, especially in the passing game. Has learned to use his length and overall athleticism to distract quarterbacks, waving his arms and timing his leap in an attempt to tip passes at the line of scrimmage… jumped from zero to three to seven PBUs over his three seasons as a starter… Good strength to hold up surprisingly well in the running game. Anchors well, locking out would-be blockers and keeping his knees bent and butt down to create a pile. Hard worker.

I can see him winning the RDE spot out of TC across from Carlos Dunlap in real life. I think he provides me with some versatility in that I can play him in or out, or I can make him an OLB or Leo on obvious passing downs. I like what he adds to my front seven especially when I hear Chandler Jones and Michael Johnson comparisons being thrown around.

I had a complete write up done for another guy but I'm hoping he drops to me next round... we'll see.

I plan to slide this guy into my weakside spot.  Briggs is old, so I need some youth and speed flanking Timmons.  Still holes to fill, but I'll go with this bro.

The Sentinels select George Iloka, SS/FS, Cincinnati Bengals

A three year starter at Boise State, Iloka was considered a top NFL draft prospect in the 2012 NFL draft.  Some scouting resources even had him as the #1 FS.  But Iloka fell, the Bengals took him in the 5th round, and he barely saw the field in 2012, but for special teams.

He started every single game for the Bengals in 2013: five starts at SS, ten starts at FS, and one start against Detroit in the slot, where he laid the wood to Megatron in the above picture.  He was on the field for 97 percent of Cincy's defensive snaps last season.  PFF had him as their #20 overall safety, and in their specialized stats, he was the #3 coverage safety.  He allowed only 49 YAC last year.  He's a big, physical player who isn't afraid of contact.  Cincinnati passed on available safeties in this draft and he's earned the starting job at SS going into this season.

I love this kid's versatility.  Even though he was a starter at FS in college, he filled in at CB when BSU had some injury trouble.  As I mentioned he started at both FS/SS for Cincy, but also played in the slot.  We'll pencil him in as our starting FS for now, although we may move him to SS depending on how things go with our other safeties.  But his versatility is a huge plus for our secondary.

Alan Ball, CB (Jacksonville)

Ball was PFF's 20th best CB last season, with the majority of his score coming from a positive coverage rating. He's a team captain, a journeyman who fits Gus Bradley's high-effort scheme. He used to be the starting safety in Dallas (under Wade Phillips). He will probably be useless in three years...but so will most of my team. This guy helps us win now and maybe next year. He will deliver more quality snaps than any rookie available at this point.

With that pick we may or not be done with receivers. We drafted 4 in the last 5 rounds: Blackmon, Steve Johnson, Paul Richardson, and now Allan Robinson. One guy is suspended but we hope to see back week 8. Johnson is healthy now and then the two rookies to go with Greg Jennings. If Robinson can develop into a red zone threat with his height and vertical we'd be happy. We have the depth where he can learn for a year too. If we hit on these gambles we're more than good at WR. But for our team we need to gamble. We need the weapons on offense. Our team with a passing game would be pretty ridiculous.

We passed on one of my favorites in the draft. Don't think we'll see him back. But i think we made the right call to try and boost our passing attack.

The Rams select C Travis Swanson.

Look, we had to protect Ryan Wendell in the steal draft. That's where we were at with the interior line. LG was a gaping hole, and we had Wendell at center. I didn't want to draft and start two rookies inside, and I thought it was unlikely I'd be able to steal a starter, so I gritted my teeth and protected Wendell. But I want a long-term solution, and a reliable back-up if Wendell winds up losing his (deservedly) losing his starter spot this season. I considered taking the Fantasy Football style handicap, but I just really like Swanson as a prospect. His experience and durability throughout his career, a two-time captain... I just think it's very likely he'll be an average+ player in the league. And in the third round of the draft, that's good value - even at the center position.

I'll PM Tito.

The Bills will take S Dez Southward.  Great athlete, very raw right now, which doesn't project great at our weak S position.  Really wanted Iloka, as mentioned above.
