I would throw nothing but curves.  Even if they make contact, which is almost impossible, it's not like they can get any sort of real wood on it.

Fuck, I missed this watching a shitty fucking movie.  Got to see the post game interview on MLBN... awesome for Kershaw, hopefully they play it again tomorrow.

So here's a question for debate - as a pitching record keeping stat, why do perfect games require no errors? As a team feat it makes sense, but it seems that it's used much more now as a pitcher feat than a team feat

No walks sure; but basing it on your fielders not making an error is really kind of odd when you think about it... I'm trying to think of a parallel for hitters, like if a cycle only counted as a 'cycle' if you won the game

Also, that was absolutely filthy.

He did it against the best offense in the league, too.  Pretty damn impressive.
Yeah, although, on the road, at sea level, without Cargo, Cuddyer, Aranado (all injured) and Morneau and Blackmon (getting the night off against a lefty), this Rockies lineup wasn't close to the one the stats suggest

First team to have two individual pitchers (the Mariners had 2 no hitters in 08 but one was a multi-pitcher effort) throw no hitters in the same season since the 72 Cubs?

If Morneau and Blackmon were playing he might have had 18 strikeouts. Left handed batters sporting a .136 average against Clayton this season.

A perfect game has no one reaching base; otherwise, it is simply a no-hitter. Given that there has only been 23 of them in MLB history 21 (since 1900) in more then 300,000 games played, I'm not sure that "used much more now as a pitcher feat" means a lot. There have been eight cases where no hits, walks, or hit batsmen were recorded but errors cost the pitcher a perfect game (in one case, the pitcher made the error).

What is far rarer is only one catcher has caught two perfect games.

This guy in the front row of left field shot video at the game from batting practice onward, and uploaded a 13+ minute cilp. As camcorder vids go, it's pretty good once you get past the abrupt camera cuts and the occasionally obnoxious narration, and he definitely captured the drama and excitement.

107 pitches and 15 Ks is ridiculous.  Did he ever go to a full count even?

Yes, to Josh Rutledge in the 2nd before an inning-ending 4-3 ground-out. That was an 8-pitch PA, and the only 3-ball count of the night.

It's really a shame that most Dodger fans couldn't see the game.

The link has some Magic Johnson tweets and responses by Dodger fans that could not watch the game.

When Ramirez, Gonzalez and Kemp hit well & Kershaw is pitching like he did tonight, we can beat any team in baseball! #Dodgers

Ya think Magic?

What’s worse — rubbing the team’s good fortune in the faces of those who want to bask in it most (but can’t), with information that reads as if it was presented by a toddler of above average intelligence … or tweeting good luck to your pitcher a few hours after he lost that day’s game?

It's pretty cool how it looks like the fans behind the plate are basically standing on the field.

Here's every batter Kershaw faced condensed into 7.5 minutes, with Vin Scully on the mike.  It's apparently the 19th no-no that Scully has called.

His curve ball....I mean....what the fuck is that thing? It looks like it teleports.

Kershaw is having his best year statistically

Of the 13 who managed to put the ball in play, nine of them hit the ball on the ground. One of the four balls hit in the air didn’t leave the infield. His FIP for the game was -0.24, because the model isn’t designed to handle dominance at this level.

Were there really 46k people there?

So, I only go to a handful of games a year at the Stadium these days (I think last year only the three Sox games) because it's a hassle and I don't have any real connection to the team. But last night was a perfect storm of firm event (free tickets, food, and parking), the arguable best pitcher in the game vs. the arguable best player in the game, and my adopt-a-team Rockies.

Traffic around the stadium and entering the parking lot was unusually light; I left my office downtown at 6:40, and was in the suite in time to see Ben Savage weakly one-hop the first pitch, and hear the anthem. This is what Dodger Stadium looked like as Kershaw was finishing his pregame warmups.

Obviously, it filled in some, but other than behind the plate, the reserve section (blue seats), which is the biggest section, was maybe 15-20% full. The bleachers were probably 80% full.

Here's what it looked like to start the top of the 9th:

And it wasn't just the reserve section that was empty. Large swaths of the loge sections were deserted. In RedHawksFan's mlb link posted above, just as Kershaw finishes the 8th, Vin says "amongst the large crowd," and you get this shot of the loge:

I was a season ticket holder in 2008. I gave them up because I only made maybe 25-30 games, and I couldn't even unload my tickets for anywhere near face when I couldn't make it. Since then, I just buy from StubHub on the day of, because there are always tons of great seats available for cheap.

Still, that was fucking awesome, and I feel extremely lucky to have seen it.
