Horford’s situation worked out for him, but it very well might not have. While his decision to re-up in Boston was his own, he wasn’t in control of the decision to come here at all. He just as easily could be sitting next to Malcolm Brogdon. I still believe Gordon Hayward made a stupid decision to go to Charlotte to maximize his earnings and have a chance to be “the man”.

I think the idea was "Hey, Al, How'd you like it in Philly?"
Wouldn’t his response be, “It was rich!” These veteran players by the time they get out of their rookie deals realize that this is a business. Passing up tens of millions of dollars is almost always a bad business decision. That is why they hire agents/advisors to prevent their emotions from making bad business decisions.

Probably. May depend on what Boston was offering.

38-12-9 on 15-21 shooting.

Not easy to do in the NBA, even against the Wizards scrubs.

Pro am P ends the regular season strong (82/82 games played as well).

Yes, the exciting thing for me is that he's learning (rapidly) how to get his shot off in the midrange and near the rim against NBA length and athleticism.

He was wayyy too easy to guard previously: he would either shoot a 3, pass, or dribble unthreateningly under the basket and pass to the perimeter.

There's an actual solid NBA rotation player here, and I suspect we'll get to see more of that player when a big roster move inevitably happens in the next 1-2 years.

Shower thought, but Pritchard's value probably goes up a decent bit in a league in which
- you're allowed to maul guys when they try to shoot over you
- 3s become a more valuable form of offense because you can't get as physical with them

I had a similar thought about the C's in general. As it becomes more physical inside, having all 8 guys who can shoot becomes a real advantage.

I am no basketball theorist, but wouldnt the Inverse be:

"If its more physical and guys can maul in the paint then driving and shooting (or passing) becomes harder. So dont worry so much about the drive and REALLY get into these guys grill so they cant launch 3s. If they blow by we can be more aggressive helping and meeting them at the rim"

Yes this is precisely what we’ve seen happening in these playoffs.

Yes, which depends on having good shooters. We've also seen that in these playoffs, with mixed results. If the team has good shooters, or gets hot, it works. If not, it gets ugly fast.

Yes. I keep seeing over and over again hard closeouts, guy drives the closeout, and then gets MET at the rim. They are letting everything go there. This killed Phoenix, in particular.

This is downstream from a big emphasis in the new officiating: being less strict about the exact path a defender takes to meet the driver. They had been calling EVERYTHING that wasn't perfect lateral movement as a foul, and now you can run into guys a lot more without maintaining technically perfect "legal guarding position."

Not much chatter about PP of late but he's been pretty good this series. Joe gave him 25 minutes last night so he must be happy with his play too.
The whole "PP can't play in the playoffs" thing is looking fairly wrong at this point. The new rules help, he got better, and I don't see how is contract isn't really really good value going forward.

Two huge shots for him - the one to take it from 9 to12 in the middle of the 4th quarter in Game 3 and the one that finally gave them a 10 point lead at the end of the third last night. Very nice to see.

Have to give some credit to Joe and the other guys on the team for the latter one. Huge, huge shot and Joe called #11.

There's a big role for PP in this series if Cleveland is going to go small. He's the Celtics' 2nd-best player (after Jrue) at bodying guys on the perimeter and staying with them around screens. Very important for limiting 3-point damage against the small, good-shooting lineups Cleveland can throw out.

This is especially true if, as people have commented in other threads (and is borne out by what we're seeing on the court), Cleveland's primary offensive approach is "shoot a shit-ton of threes and don't let Boston do that back." PP is REALLY good at sticking with his guy and harassing shooters.

I was told PP would be unplayable in the playoffs. He's now scored 16, 13, 5, 11, 11, 8, and 12 while his team has gone 6-1 against Cleveland and Indy.

In fairness he got smoked in game 1, as an huge liability and you didn’t post. Great game 2 though. Let’s hope he can keep it going.

While he's definitely improved, he has much more freedom to play his game and attack this season instead of standing in a corner, never touching the ball. Yes, he will be hunted on D depending on the matchup and have bad games, but his confidence with the ball to make plays and take shots makes him an X factor now if he gets hot

After two games, 10-21 for 22 points 7 assists for McConnell, 7-10 for 20 points, 4 assists for PP. TJ was a catalyst for Indy in the Knicks series, but has been neutralized by the attentive Celtics defense. Pritchard going right at McConnell, making him play defense, is really smart, especially after one of TJ’s dribblefests.

If Jrue is out for game three with the flu, Pritchard would be the right match up for McConnell, who will probably start for Hali.

Pritchard got smoked again in this one, didn't make the 7 man 4th quarter rotation.

Edit- he is what he is, some matchups he can be a really impactful bench piece, some matchups he's just not gonna get it done defensively

I need to re-watch, but PP usually looks great when everyone else is locked in. When they're not, it just doesn't work.

The team was......not locked in in this one, at least during his minutes.

I don't think that changes your overall point that much (they needed different lineups tonight), but I don't think it's as much a matchup thing as an overall scheme/effort thing.

Credit to TJ McConnell, he has developed a nice offensive game.

I bet Payton (& the Celtics) are taking notes and stealing a few of his concepts.

TJs Nash dribble + quick 10' pull-up is incredibly effective in breaking down bench defenses

The th8ng id like to see Pritchard develop, or lean into, is keeping his dribble alive on drives. Too often he picks it up in no man's land. I always thought a floater would be nice, but his pullup is fine for keeping the defense honest enough.

100 per lovegtm's point. If the rest of the five ain't firing, and he is targeted on defense, there really isn't much he can do. And there ain't much he can do to be the glue on offense either...

I wonder how KP being in the game would have affected McConnell’s night? Or even Kornet? He took advantage of limited rim protection, which was smart, but a bunch of those shots in the lane would have been blocked or forced to alter the shot.

I'm rewatching now, and PP was totally fine in the 3rd quarter. They brought him in along with Tillman around the 3:30 mark. The team kicked him out of switches when he ended up on Siakam.

He's totally playable in this series and the next for his 10-15 minutes, just needs the other 4 guys to be engaged.

After the one to close the 3rd on Sunday, there was one angle that showed he turned to the bench and yelled "that's what I do!"

And a very valuable thing it is to do, too, P.

I mean, we're one game removed from him being decent in game 2. Dallas has also been an ok matchup for him in the past.
These were in non-playoff games that can be game planned and have a much greater sense of urgency. I hated this matchup for him and said as much in the week leading up to it but he hasn’t killed us. Joe had him eat a couple minutes when on the floor with Doncic in the first half and despite his alligator arms and massive size disadvantage we were fortunate that Luka just missed easy uncontested jumpers in the lane. That’s not something you really want to count on though.

They had the play where they took advantage of Luka being locked in on taking that matchup one on one where White helped from behind to strip Luka. I think Pritchard did the same thing in game 2.

Yes, Joe got them in and out of that matchup quickly. My point is that this isn’t a sustainable matchup just as posting up Gafford against Tatum isn’t. Both coaches handled these perfectly in showing the other a look then quickly getting out of it as it’s not something they are going to win at long term.

I read this as the average distance on those 6 post season attempts is 38 feet. The regular season attempts might be a lot closer?

He definitely has hit some last second long range bombs all year, but not sure about your conclusion from that tweet.
I realize it’s not at all easy, but it seems like he often shoots a little too early/ further than he has to, imo. Maybe if you wait until the last second it’s always contested and he’d rather shoot the uncontested 39 foot shot than the contested 35 foot shot, IDK.

Nice to see Pritchard make more than one or two shots in a Finals game.

He’s 1-13 in this year’s Finals, and has made only two buckets overall in his last seven Finals games, after going 5-11 in the first two Finals games in 2022. Since then, he’s 2-22 over seven games and 70 odd minutes.

It would be nice to get a 4-7 bombfest from PP in Game 4 tonight

It’s maybe slightly forgotten bc of his performance on both ends in that terrible second half of the 4th quarter Wednesday night but I’m almost wondering if PP is our best on-ball defender when Luka has the ball. Other than one easy layup during that stretch at the end of the game, almost every time I’ve watched Luka take on Pritchard 1-on-1, PP has stoned him.

France beat US in the next round 20-18 (time ran out). The game is below for everyone who is avoiding work. New Zealand ended up beating Argentina in the Finals. I took a quick look around the rosters and as far as I can tell, other than the US, I didn't see any other future NBA players. Definitely did not look at all of the teams. I certainly didn't mean that as a "Let's put Pritchard on Luka full-time" -- I just meant that when he's been on the floor in those limited minutes, Luka has been virtually unable to get a bucket. I suspect it's a combo of Pritchard's approach and Luka trying to bully him with a mismatch. But it's been surprisingly effective.

I think a good portion of it is that Luka has been expecting help on it really hasn't come.

When they cleared out a side for Luka against PP, he just put PP under the basket. He could do this as much as he wanted (see second shot here: Video and Shotcharts | Stats | NBA.com ).

He got one or two stops on him but any kind of regular use of him on Doncic will be ugly. I like him pressuring LD in the backcourt though. Irving roasted PP repeatedly last game. His shooting has been awful. I'd staple him to the bench and give Hauser more minutes.

I'm hoping it's just a couple of bad games, because Pritchard was 17-32 from 3 against Cleveland and Indy. Him more than holding his own against Luka is absolutely an aberration, but so is him shooting 0-12 in this series outside of his buzzer beater.
