This is a completely uninspiring trade.
Don't mind Cespedes, but the team is going to be brutal next year and they needed a return that will give them an asset that will be part of the team for more than one season. Let's face it, Cespedes is the type of player that someone will overpay once he hits free agency, but with his lack of plate patience and erratic play there is no way he will be worth the $20 AAV he's likely to get. So it really seems like the Sox traded Lester for a pick and the potential of another pick. I guess that's better than what they might have gotten if they let him walk but nothing that inspiring. Would have far preferred a prospect.
And can people please stop suggesting Cespedes could somehow be part of a Stanton trade. Cespedes hits free agency one year before Stanton and the whole reason Miami is trading Stanton is that they have no interest in the cost of resigning expensive free agents.
