How on earth does Perk still have a job? He's terrible
Is it weird to assume he must have a very cheap contract? He’s in a ton of shows, gets a bunch of airtime, but is clearly not good.

With all the recent firings, maybe Perk just works cheap and they figure the rest of the on air talent can make up for his shortcomings.

Otherwise, I have no idea how they can’t get a former player to do a better job than he does.

Semi-interested to see Hayward on OKC. Are they going to give him legit minutes?

He looks kinda washed to me, and his injury history gives him a good reason to be washed.

Maybe part of that is the Charlotte mess and he has something left in the tank?

I dunno, I’m still leaning mostly washed.

So, if we're scoring the East trades from a Celtics-reaching-the-Finals equity perspective:
- Knicks improved the most
- Celtics added a nice minor piece (Tillman)
- Bucks same (PatBev)
- No other east contender really moved the needle at all

That sound right?

Edit: I guess you could call Philly adding Hield "meaningful"— I'm just too bearish on them given the uncertainty around Embiid's health to take this seriously.

76ers improved quite a bit, Korkmaz to Hield is a good upgrade, especially if they can re-sign Morris.

Surprised Dinwiddie's value is essentially zero---he was a pretty good player last two years, albeit as a specific type of player. I guess the core issue there is he needs the ball and if you give him all that possession time you probably aren't actually good.

The Chicago Bulls wanted Jonathan Kuminga from the Warriors in trade talks centered around Alex Caruso, per
@KCJHoop
“In exploratory trade talks with the Golden State Warriors centered on Caruso, league sources said the Bulls inquired about Jonathan Kuminga's availability. That was rebuffed, and the Bulls made clear in talks with all teams that they didn't want to trade Caruso, especially for a package on perhaps other young pieces like Moses Moody.”

Completely get that there is a need for that kind of personality for a portion of listeners, but he's too combative and trying to talk over people that he's taking more than he's "adding"

That could have been an awesome trade for Chicago (Kuminga) if they'd moved a few weeks earlier. He's flashed so much in the past weeks that it's not surprising GSW rebuffed them now.

Teams who really needed to do more....Lakers and Wizards at top of list (for different reasons)? Bulls a good note - they needed to sell more than anyone I'd argue.

I don't count they Bucks---they have almost no mechnanisms to do anything at this point

Read somewhere that the Bulls have not made a trade involving a player since the summer of 2011. Yikes.

I'd include Miami in this. They really should have dealt Herro if possible (with a pick, if necessary) for better/older player(s) who helps them win now. The fact that Herro is only 24 doesn't mean much for the Heat but should be appealing for other rebuilding teams. As backcourt playoff defense goes, Herro and Rozier feel very exploitable together.

Miami adding Rozier was material, not that they couldn't have done more at deadline.

Raptors keeping Bruce Brown and Portland keeping Brogdon both feel to me like misses, though never know what was offered for them.

The Bulls are not a serious franchise. This is a team with a hard play-in (or 1st round) ceiling both now and in the immediate future, and they decide to just hold onto the most desired role player in the league and not make any moves at all? And they leak that they would have traded him for Kuminga, which obviously the Warriors wouldn't do now that he's broken out? Just brutal.

These are the two most surprising, although both of them can be moved this offseason. Brown can be moved as an asset or as an expiring to save someone money

Lowe said on his last podcast that teams were likely waiting to the summer when a bunch of teams (LAL, MIA, MIL, DAL) will have many more 1st round picks to trade. Makes sense.

It already was, but this is now easily the best Knicks roster since the 90s. Incredible depth, no serious injuries...just a lot of tired guys at the moment. Post ASB we should see Randle back and OG continues to be day-to-day. Mitchel on his way back...just an incredible roster and as a Knicks fan I'm going to enjoy the ride, first round exit or later exit, it's a fun season.
Every time I watch a bit of the Knicks, they look ever-more-annoying to play against. I think it's that they don't seem to ever take a possession off. Sometimes Brunson is just left to do his thing for a few possessions while others stand in a corner, but on D, the guys are flying around out there.

On current evidence I think they're the second best team in the East, no matter whether the Heat continue to be like the horror-movie villain who won't die. They really need Randle back to be able to pull opposing bigs out of the paint in the playoffs (I think they're fine even if Mitchell Robinson doesn't come back, given how Hartenstein has been).

You should start a better-late-than-never 2023-24 Knicks thread. At least you and Jon Abbey could trade optimistic rave reviews for another few months.

Nothing really needle moving from any team in contention in the East. Knicks already made their big move with OG, Pacers with Siakam, Heat with Rozier.

As I see it from here, there are currently 4 "legit" contenders in the EC- BOS, MIL, CLE, and NYK. 2 quasi-contenders- PHI would be #2 in the conference with a fully healthy Embiid but who knows now, and MIA I refuse to count out with Butler sandbagging another regular season and Spo at the helm. IND can give anyone a series in the first round, ORD doesn't appear to have the horses to do so.

As far as Celtics competition goes: MIL didn't upgrade their wing defense and will be trotting out Middleton, Crowder, Portis; Beverley at backup PG gives them better defense there, but how much will he be playing over other guards. Main concern is Giannis + Dame going supernova together. The Knicks are deep, and their top 6 is a very strong unit- Brunson-DD/Hart-OG-Randle-Hartenstein- and they run solid rotation player or better deep at pretty much every spot. Could turn a series vs. Boston into a dog fight for sure; Celtics would be favored but if healthy they would be a bitch to play against. Cleveland I would be slightly less concerned about. Mitchell is an All-NBA caliber creator, but they will still need to figure out a specific playoff rotation and how to mesh their top 4 together- against a locked in playoff defense and a 5 out Celtics team that will stretch Allen + Mobley to some degree. PHI + MIA not much to say, one needs to get healthy and the other we'll just have to see if they can turn it on come April.

Perk has his moments. I appreciate the fearlessness. He doesn't hedge his bets, the way so many NBA commentators do. Every once in awhile, he hits hard on target. When Draymond received his indefinite suspension, everyone from Adam Silver to Joe Dumars to Steve Kerr (predictably) to most ESPN talking heads weighed in with some form of hope-he-can-get-the-help-he-needs platitudinous bullshit. I remember one roundtable discussion in which ESPN commentators went around the table reiterating this lame, reflexive take.. until the table reached Perk, who countered with (I'm paraphrasing -- sorry I don't remember this better), what are y'all talking about?! You're treating a repeat offending perpetrator as if he's is the victim here.

They're first apron, so they could buy someone -if- they dropped below the first apron before buying out, which, I don't think, they did.

Looking at this again, I wonder if the Sixers traded Springer -so- they could drop low enough to sign a buyout player post-Hield trade.
Ahh thanks. I thought it was only 2nd apron teams that couldn't sign buyout guys making more than the MLE, but I guess not

The Knicks just got a really good bench microwave in Bojan.

The spread between him and Brogdon isn't that wide.

He is kinda washed, but a guy with his experience, BBIQ, and swiss army knife toolset is a good fit for a team with a median age of 23.

Yeah they don't need him to be a top 5 player. If he can play 15 min a night on average, that is probably all they are looking for. Not sure he is actually an upgrade on Andrew Wiggins at this point, but they play different roles, and could get used in different situations.

Yeah, I guess I'm not sure if he's partially washed/kind of useful or fully washed?

He isn't peak Hayward, but maybe on a contender he has 15-20 average to slightly above average minutes in him.

But he may be completely washed and useless. In that case, experience and BBIQ doesn't help much.

His D has slipped a lot, but he's still a useful overall guy on offense. He'll be a stabilizing guy, the pro who doesn't get too upset, knows all the officials, etc. Most of his numbers just look like an older guy in modest decline, not a cliff. They don't need him to lock guys down.

Bojan hasn't been a bench player in many years. Pretty much started every game since he went to Indiana. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts this late in his career and coming to a team midseason.

I’d imagine he starts until Randle comes back right? Brunson Divincenzo OG Bojan Hartenstein

He'll get plenty of shots playing with the 2nd unit and his defense won't get as exposed against opposing benches.
6th man on a contender, at this stage of his career, is a good spot for his skillset.

Thibs values defense and expect they will lean that way with their starting 5 when Randle/OG get healthy.
Bojan will play regular minutes in the playoffs

Cuts spinning out from trades:

Korkmaz immediately cut. WOnder if he goes to Europe. He's probably good and young enough for an NBA shot, but he'd get more money and starting roles in Europe.

View: https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1755724257529565227

James Bouknight getting cut, another 2021 lotto pick.

Charlotte had two top 20 picks in the 2021 draft... neither made it through their rookie deal, and neither even brought back a trade asset, just straight cuts in year 3.
