Cuz Farrell likes his gumption. Pa-ching.judyb said:Okay, why wouldn't they option the pitcher who just started yesterday and so won't be available for several days anyway, and who caused them to be playing with a short bench by getting himself suspended?

Patience is not a virtue of mine.
Speculatively, perhaps RLDR is getting traded?InsideTheParker said:Now this is annoying. We get a shiny new toy, but don't get to watch one of the few pleasures of the season. Rats. I suppose the thinking is that Doubront gives value out of the bullpen if not in the rotation, and that RDLR needs to keep starting every five days. But it is just another disappointment in a disappointing season that we can't see RDLR again until someone is foolish enough to take Peavy off the Sox's hands.
It's more depressing, unless he magically turns into Stanton.EricFeczko said:I'm not sure this possibility is less depressing though.
That's what I'm hoping for. After I sacrifice the goat.Sprowl said:It's more depressing, unless he magically turns into Stanton.

Red(s)HawksFan said:Couldn't RDLR being the odd man out simply be a matter of conserving his innings? He's about 7 innings short of his total from last year and June isn't even over. I'm fairly certain the intent isn't for him to double his workload from last year, which he's on pace to do at the moment. Sending him down means they can slow him down a bit and probably convert him to the bullpen in the second half.
It could only be he or Workman going down today, and Workman has the higher ceiling in terms of an innings cap. They probably feel a lot more comfortable riding him a lot deeper into the season than they are with RDLR.
Can't wait for The Rutles to get back together again.Sprowl said:Mookie, Rubby, Xander and Christian are pretty cool names, though.

And they could be hoping to get ONE very good start out of Peavy to get an NL team interested.

If they aren't interested now, one good start won't do a lot to change their minds.

Have you not been following Betts? In his last 10 games he's had 2 or 3 hits in 5 of them alone. He's raked at both AA and AAA. He is one of the game's top hitting prospects, he was going to be on the club at some point this season, we are not talking about AAA filler. The FO obviously feels he can improve on the awful OF offense.
Also, he is not coming up to ride the pine, even the most incompetent management would not call its top prospect up to sit on the bench

vs. facing the 2014 Cy Young winner in your first major league at bat.
Or, he could have wasted a day in Pawtucket and had some hot weiners and Del's...which, on 2nd thought, isn't such a bad trade off.

Farrell said Sox wanted to give Betts "a day to settle in." Will start tomorrow.

Brock is insulted by your omission of his name.
Then they would have brought him up tomorrow. It's not like they didn't know Tanaka was starting tonight. They did the same thing with JBJ didn't they? Maybe they didn't bring him up yesterday so he wouldn't have to face Tanaka tonight.E5 Yaz said:
I wish they could just be honest about it sometime. Everyone in the media, and almost everyone on this board, knows that he's sitting so as not to start his career against Tanaka. Just say it, Farrell; it's not going to hurt anyone by telling the truth

BosRedSox5 said:
With Pedroia you would literally have to drag him off the field. So, it's going to be hard. He barely likes to take a single day off, let alone "a few" and I'm sure he'd hate to have a highly touted rookie out there playing in his spot.
Considering almost everyone called up by this manager and in the tenure of the last real manager sat for a day before playing, I'm pretty sure this is the truth.E5 Yaz said:

Immediately given a non rookie number which happens to be Mike Timlin's old number? Cooperstown it is.knucklecup said:RT @TimBritton: Betts wearing No. 50.

It would not surprise me if Mookie didn't play a single game at 2B unless Pedroia is hurt. No way to the Sox want to give the media a chance to clamor for Dustin's head.
Papelbon's Poutine said:Might I recommend listening to a little program called 'Felger and Mazz' sometime?
It was standard practice under Tito. It wasn't always the case, but as a general rule anyone called up or acquired didn't play on Day 1.Papelbon's Poutine said:I don't recall this ever being the case with Tito but I'm going off of memory. Seems like who ever got called up got into the first game they were there for. Pedroia and Ellsbury I know played right off a way.
The game is on Fox tonight. No need to buy MLBTV tonight.curly2 said:
Bad news living out of market: No NESN, so I have to buy MLBTV and I get no pre- and post-game.
Good news, not hearing Boston sports talk radio.
To be fair to Mazz(difficult for me), he stressed he wasn't saying Mookie should replace Pedey. He was saying if the Sox hadn't signed Pedey to the extension there would be people who would now say(him I assume though he didn't really say so) that they shouldn't re-sign Pedey and should go with Mookie.Papelbon's Poutine said:Might I recommend listening to a little program called 'Felger and Mazz' sometime?
Let's all sing the "I hate Fox Saturday broadcasts" song. Hey, didya know that Babe Ruth played on the Red Sox but they sold him to the Yankees?richgedman'sghost said:The game is on Fox tonight. No need to buy MLBTV tonight.
BBREF doesn't seem to have promotions in their transaction list so I can't look up individuals, but it was standard procedure for years.Papelbon's Poutine said:Well, SPs obviously always started right away. I seem to remember relievers always getting used same day. And absent Pedroia and Ells, I'm failing to remember a rookie that was brought up to fill a significant role and not just emergency filler/bench guy because someone got hurt.
I'm not trying to be argumentative I'm just lacking the recall to come up with names or enough of them to label it standard practice. Who are we talking about here?
Of for fuck's sake. You're basically asking me to remember whether I had a breakfast sandwich for breakfast on a specific date five years ago. I don't remember the routine things and without a place to look it up, you're simply asserting that your memory trumps mine which is not necessarily the case.Papelbon's Poutine said:Ok let me rephrase. Can you name one?
Read the thread. Every rookie called up mid season since at least Farrell was manager hasn't played their first game on their first day. The closest player to Betts, obviously, would be Bogaerts. Extreme talents being brought up to supplement the team. X was deliberately called up on the road, and then sat the first and third games he was up.Papelbon's Poutine said:Ok let me rephrase. Can you name one?
Sticking him at 9 would be a nice combination of not putting him on pressure and putting him right in line with the guys at the top of the lineup.Bob Montgomery's Helmet Hat said:So, I wonder if Mookie will get the 2 hole tomorrow.
Rasputin said:I don't remember what time of day the trade went down but Victor Martinez was acquired on July 31 and first played on Aug 1. Casey Kotchman, also acquired on July 31 first played on Aug 2, both in 2009, of course.
