Mike'd Up: The Mike Francesa Show

I think Mike for a long time was convinced that his Giants had ended the Patriots' reign as a championship-caliber team.  He relished that fact that Coughlin and Eli were the forces of good that had taken down evil incarnate Belichick and destroyed his legacy. I think he is angry because that's now been proven wrong.  There's a thought slowly moving from his subconsciousness that the Giants are no longer a story to themselves but rather just a part of The Story of the Patriots.  They are now an answer on the back of the trivial pursuit card, "Who is the only team to beat the Belichick-Brady Patriots in a Superbowl?" *(for now)*

I think he's angry because instead of the Patriots dynasty giving way to a Giants dynasty, the Giants rose, peaked, and fell and those fucking Patriots are still there.  Belichick and Brady are still winning Superbowls and building their legacies as all-time greats.  He's rooting for a footnote right now, and he can't stand it.

Well, two superbowls in 5 years is hardly a footnote, but I agree that he holds the Giants up as this paragon of football honor and history, and thinks of the Patriots as this second-rate franchise that doesn't know it's supposed to suck.  The problem is that the record doesn't bear that out anymore.

1993 called, Mike; it wants its status quo back.

He's been smugly using the "the Pats haven't won a Super Bowl in"  counter to every pro-Pats caller since it was 7 years...8 years....9 years...10 years.....(which should make a Jet's fan want to jump off the Verrazano Bridge).  Hey FFF, time to RESET THAT COUNTER!

Mike is also probably upset that the "Patriots haven't won since Spygate!" story can't be used anymore.

But if you think like Mike, the Patriots really didn't  win anything last Sunday.  That was just a game where the Seahawks failed to win. The 0-fer since Spygate narrative still works for Mike.

I don't like Mike either, but he did have an interesting exchange with a caller in the last hour of his show yesterday.

Mike in Montclair called and said that Belichick absolutely should have called a TO on second down after the Lynch run.

"There's no way Bill Belichick did not do exactly what he wanted to do there... I've watched Bill Belichick for 30 years... There's no way..... He is a master on the sidelines. He does not make those mistakes."

Thought it was about as fair a comment I have heard Mike make about Belichick.

Here to Eternity
This morning Craig Carton called out Francesa's claim yesterday that he would have criticized the pass play even if it had been won the SB for Seattle as total nonsense; Boomer seemed to agree with Carton.

edit: whoops, Craig, not Chris.

How many of these were with Wilfork and Siliga at full strength? There's probably a garbage-time TD in there as well. Need more context behind that stat.

Well, the 5 conversions were as follows:

F. Jackson, BUF making the score 20-14 NE
C. Ivory, NYJ, making the score 19-17 NYJ
Hillman, DEN, making the score 7-3 DEN
A. Dixon, BUF, making the score 14-3 BUF
Tipton, IND, making the score 14-7 NE

So, one was in the meaningless last game, but it was in first half and Siliga and Wilfork both played. They both also played in the DEN and IND game and none of the TDs were garbage time scores.

Not sure what that all really means, but there it is.

But that isn't the case - Bevell called the pass.

Whatever.
The story is that Pete saw the personnel grouping and told Bevell to pass. Bevell is the one who called the specific pass play that was run.

And getting hoarse in the process,  You can hear his voice going, from all the shouting.

EDIT:  tuned in around 3:00 and he was talking NBA and the Cav and Lebron, so I figured he was moving on.  Tuned in again around 4:00 and he was in full blown shouting anti-BB mode.  He stopped just short of saying that the Pats won despite BB's coaching (not calling a TO when he could/should have, and putting out the D that he put on the field for the pick, IOW BB got VERY lucky with Butler's pick as he had no reason to believe that SEA would pass in that situation.).

Put another way:  in FF's mind, two of the most highly respected coaches in the NFL are utter morons because they called plays/formations different from what FF would have called.

Along the way, he's repeatedly misquoting Carroll to fit his own narrative.

Seattle sent out no blocking back, 3 WRs, and no extra TEs or OLs, but BB was lucky it wasn't a running play?

He actually has been pro BB on the timeout situation. Just now he's try to convince himself that the NFL might put them on the road for the Thursday night opener in Dallas.

If it helps secure Jerry's support vs. the Commish, it might be a good investment by Kraft to do that.

What he is furious about but will refuse to even pt on the table because it would imply that BB is a genius is the fact that it is now obvious that BB baited Pete Carroll into responding to his defensive alignment at the goal line, which enabled Malcolm Butler to make that interception. Psychically Fat Boy just can't deal with that one except through anger.

Thursady 4 days later still going on about the Call.
"Patriots coach Bill Belichick himself said the criticism of the second-and-1 slant pass which was intercepted to seal the win for his team was “totally out of line.”

“There has been a lot of criticism that I don’t think is anywhere close to being deserved or founded,” Belichick said on WEEI, via Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. “That football team is very good, very well-coached, and Pete does a great job.

“Malcolm [Butler] and Brandon [Browner], on that particular play, just made a great play. I think the criticism they’ve gotten for the game is totally out of line and by a lot of people who I don’t think are anywhere near even qualified to be commenting on it.”

Belichick was also gracious to the Seahawks, knowing himself what it’s like to come so close and lose.

“I wouldn’t be able to say enough about Seattle. They’re a great football team, well coached. They deserve so much credit for what they’ve done, and how well they’ve done it,” he said. “I know they are disappointed as we’ve been in that spot a couple times ourselves. So the high that we feel is probably not as high as the low that they feel. But that’s a really good football team.”'

... and by a lot of people who I don't think are anywhere near even qualified to be commenting on it.

He just predicted that the Cubs will win the WS.

Earlier this week, he said the NFL will likely drop this, with the insinuation that the damaging evidence will be buried. He knows there's nothing there, but is too dishonest to say it. So he's setting himself up for when (if) the Pats are found blameless, (other than allowing the ball-boy a bathroom break) he will call it another NFL white-wash/cover-up and letting the Pats get away with it.

4-0 better than 4-2 in the Super Bowl

Too bad the caller I heard couldn't remind the Fat Fuck that 2 wins in the AFC Championship game is better than 2 losses. Caller should have reminded Mikey what happened to Joe Montana against the Giants.

I remember a couple of beat downs. I guess those losses were better than wins.

Resentment rules. Positioning the coaches in his sick way ahead of Bill Belichick when he has nothing except "that's the way I see it"

Hrrumpphhhh

Now he is screaming about it!!!

No credit for winning a conference championship!!!

comparing Brady to Tarkenton and Kelly!!!

Better to lose multiple conference championship games and never lose in the Super Bowl

He finally made that point by YELLING about it!!!!

Best Ever!?!?! Nope - not unless you never lose a Super Bowl!!! I guess he thinks Bradshaw is better than Brady!!!!

Priceless stuff. He has totally lost his mind!!!

He's preparing so when the Pats win another and pass them, he still has his new made up perverted anti-logic to fall back on.

Only in baseball it's different

Because it's the MFYs!!!!!

I want to know when I get to the grandest stage that I win that game every time.

Now - especially no credit for losing when he was a two TD favorite!!!

The fact that he puts Bradshaw ahead of Brady because Bradshaw never lost in the Super Bowl is just silly.  But whatever... his opinion is meaningless.  Listening to him cry about the SB was fun, but it's time to stop listening until something terrible happens to the MFY.

I stopped on his show on fs1 having never heard him. It might've been a slow day but he was incredibly dry and boring. He had absolutely nothing to say. I made it two minutes

I heard that whole argument and it's ridiculous. 2 seasons that Brady got to the Super Bowl are worse than losing before then apparently.
Yup, Blake Bortles had a better year than Russell Wilson this year. Makes perfect sense.

I heard him earlier in the show brushing off a caller who asked about the Giants cheating when they would open and close the doors at one end of the old Giant stadium when the opposing teams were attempting field goals.

Paraphrasing his response:
That stuff that happens on the field like that is not cheating. Did you see them open the doors--where were you sitting? When the caller would not back down-- How do you know that any field goals were affected by that, you don't know that. And pumping in crowd noise is not cheating. I'm talking about things done off the field by coaches like taping a walk-through. That's cheating.

I'm hoping that Pats fans show up in droves in CT tomorrow.

Do you think he'd get better ratings and more callers if he was talking Knicks and Islanders?
Maybe if he included some Rag talk with the Islander talk, yes. After all these years of the Islanders being a non-entity,  they are compelling in their final season in Long Island.  Fatso is losing a potential audience by ignoring hockey. Where have we heard that before? ...Oh yeah..EEI..!  May he suffer a fall as great  as Ordway and the Old Big Show.

The implication of this argument is really fun.  By his logic, both the Packers and the Colts had better seasons than the Seahawks this year.  After all, they didn't lose in the Superbowl!

Last year, the Pats and the 49ers had better years than the Broncos.

etc.

Love it.

Pats fans should storm his set at the Mohegan Sun this afternoon the way the Pats stormed the NFL Network set on Sunday night. He is going into what is at least semi-enemy territory today - his biased ignorance cannot go unchecked!  At the very least some sort of a Pats chant should fuck with his broadcast.
