I spend most days in my life trying to avoid being on committees.  Especially fake Spanish ones.

Real Substance: Sterling is your best talent left.  I don't think there's any chance Sturridge becomes a 30M player, but Sterling probably does.  It's a preseason friendly, but you were completely dominated in the diamond versus City while theoretically having a man advantage in the midfield.  Looked much better in the 2nd half playing 4-3-3, I wonder if the diamond needs to be abandoned without Suarez to help make it tick.

There's no "h" in Atletico, at least in its current form. As you may know, the club was Athletic Aviacion de Madrid until Franco banned the use of foreign names. So, we dropped the "h" and got on with it.

Presently, the "h" is reserved for our brethren from the north, Athletic Bilbao. Incidentally, Atletico was founded by three Basques living in Madrid. It's all a bit incestuous.

The three person tribunal of Vinho Tinto, bosox4283 & fletcherpost will review the facts and issue a ruling.

My vote is Firmo Viejo. For instance, I would say "la casa azul" or "los pantalones verdes".

I appreciate being on this tribunal, especially since I'm merely an American masquerading as a Spaniard. You can find me in Philly wearing Zara clothes, drinking rioja, making tortilla espanola, slicing jamon, and fake bullfighting anything that crosses my path.

It's too bad the Swiss Ramble seems to have stopped posting, because I think this could be a worthwhile rabbit hole for someone with 20 hours to research to go down.  But broadly, I think it's clear there are financial tiers of clubs, with the two Scotland South clubs at the top.  I don't know how they do it, but they seem to have the resources to spend 70m on a player when no one else can.  When a young-ish player has the kind of year that would line him up to play in their squads and earn that kind of cash, they swoop in.  The next tier is probably Chelsea, City, and PSG, with Man U, Bayern, and Monaco not far behind (Man U is telling everyone they can spend with the Viejo Firmo, but I'll believe it when they do it).  With its global commercial revenue, Liverpool can make that jump into the group that spends 40-50m on a player, but that probably requires some consolidation in the Top Four and CL.

If you've only got half an hour, this is a really good read that summarizes pretty well the current state of finances for the Top 20 clubs in the world.

By revenues, at least, the Firmo Viejo are on top in a tier by themselves, the next tier is Bayern, the Mancs, and PSG (although much of their "revenues" are just laundered oil money), and then there's a pretty large next group (with some internal variation) that includes City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Milan, Juventus, Dortmund, and Liverpool.

Of course, its not all about revenue but also about debt (which continues to hamper the Mancs, and which hampered Arsenal quite a bit for a while), the need for new stadia (hello Italian clubs), and the willingness of owners to piss their money away (Chel$ki, PSG, and City).

That's an excellent resource.  I've seen the summaries in the papers, but never the full report.  Thanks for linking it.

When I say, "I don't know how they do it," I'm deliberately being a little vague--what I'm wondering is how Real and Barca manage to report such massive matchday and commercial revenue when (a) the Spanish economy isn't exactly going gangbusters and (b) they don't seem to be ahead of Bayern and the top English clubs in exploiting their brands.  I'm far from an accounting expert, but given the way both clubs have pulled sketchy financial dealings in the past, I'm a little suspicious that they may not be 100% up-and-up.  The bread-and-circus politics of Firmo Viejo operations gives executives at both clubs an incentive to play games, too, as does the lenient treatment of Spanish clubs that run into financial difficulty.

Well, I think we need to win, or at least not lose in normal time today.  Playing another game in a different city 2 days later is kinda ridiculous, though.

EDIT: Or not, apparently.  I guess head-to-head must be the first tiebreaker, so we've got that over both City and Olympiacos regardless of what happens in this game.

Mignolet's kit looks downright comical
Just like the outfield player 3rd kit, I think it would actually look pretty good if it wasn't for the ridiculous diagonal stripe.

Milan's defense is...interesting.

Allen hits the post but puts in a rebound after Sterling's shot is saved.  1-0 in the 18th minute.

The ugliest kits on the field tonight are whatever the hell Milan is wearing this year. How did they screw up black and red stripes?

The changing of their badge to what appears to be a St. George's Cross (I think it's actually the flag of Milan, but still...) is bizarre.

The multiple shades of red doesn't help, either.

Great job by Ibe contolling the ball and starting the attack.  Sterling then goes down easy for the penalty.

Aaaaaand, Lambert has it saved.  Once again, nobody on this team other than Gerrard can make one.

Yeah, Milan's crest is typically half St. George's Cross and half rossoneri stripes. This year Milan is wearing the cross on its home kits and the stripes as their away badge. Looks kind of silly.

Anyways, good to see Milan is still a dumpster fire this year. Inzaghi could still crack this roster.

Agreed. I have no love for Milan in general, but the way they courted and then discarded a legend like Seedorf was an embarrassment. Couldn't happen to a nicer absentee owner.

To be fair, he's far too busy bribing judges to acquit him of diddling underage girls to pay attention to little things like the hard work Seedorf did with that team.

On looks alone, I'd say Milan took inspiration from the test stripes on a Virtual Boy.

Suso has looked prettaaay, prettaaay, prettaaay, pretty good this preseason

Hopefully he'll be among those filling in for Lallana to start the season and getting some cup games

And now it's the Mancs in 48 hours.

I doubt Rodgers is thrilled with the matchup.  It's a very quick turnaround, an extra game that they really didn't plan for, and it's close enough to the start of the season that you are just praying to get through with no injuries.  But still, it's Manchester United.  You've got to try and win.

I'd almost they'd rather finished last, and I suspect a Man U fan would feel the same way.  The last thing anyone needs is a sore hamstring right before the season starts.

I mean, sure it will be competitive, but when you are going to make 9 or 10 changes at halftime it shows what the managers will think of the game.

Still, Charlie Stillitano must be loving this.

That got me wondering what Steven Cohen is up to these days.  I wonder what he thinks of Men In Blazers.

And the Mancs already have to bring in Shaw after 8 minutes.

Who thought that playing Saturday and then again Monday in a different city was a good idea?

If he did, it was just a sliver.  Still a dumb challenge.

EDIT: I'm watching the feed on Fox Sports Go, which is not exactly ESPN3 quality.  Tough to see close plays.
