Came in here to congratulate you guys on the Lovren signing and am leaving here incredibly surprised that someone thought Luke Shaw was Southampton's best player last year, though I'm not surprised at all who that poster is. Anyway, there are certain players that you gravitate to immediately when you watch them play. Lovren was one of those guys for me. Good to see Liverpool fortifying a need. It should make for a fun season.

And that's why the forum is still named for you - instead of arguing about the content of the post, you've chosen to post passive-aggressive bullshit about the poster.

Good job, good effort purveyor of sachemonious bullshit.

There's a reason Luke Shaw wasn't Southampton's player of the season and that reason was Adam Lallana. Lallana played in all of Southampton's League games and played a much more important position, especially in the way Soton plays. In addition to conducting the Soton attack, Lallana scored 9 goals. Luke Shaw may go onto being great, but your assertion that Luke Shaw was "by far" the best player is absolutely ridiculous.

IIRC soxfan had said Shaw was the best player to buy, not their best player. Lallana is the best Southampton player to leave this summer but for the future Shaw will probably end up being better, regardless of the difference in position.

His exact words were "the best Southhampton player to switch teams this summer".

I knew what he meant, but he was being an ass and I was drinking, so I pointed out that Lallana was actually the best player.

Then I made fun of him spelling Southampton with 2 H's.

Ass is a definite promotion from troll, so I accept your version of events. ;-)

If I regret anything, it is the spelling mistake.

But we did get another nice, civil exchange between the Red and the Blue out of it.

While watching their own team become the greatest PL champions ever and having 72734 Hillsborough tributes, I'm surprised that Liverpool fans had so much time available to watch Southampton and judge their talent.

Well, they did win at Anfield, something you plucky underdog champions didn't pull off.

Of course, we just bought the guy who scored the only goal.

Came to talk about Origi unaware of the big silly shitstorm of who was Soton's best player last year.

To be fair, there's a difference between being in shape and Van Gaal shape.

Also probably a difference between playing left back at Soton shape and playing wing back in LVG's 3-5-2 shape.  There are huge physical demands on those players and it'll be interesting to see how a 19-year-old handles that over the course of a full season, especially since with Evra gone they really don't have any cover at that position.

Please do! I'd love to know what people think of Origi.

What's the point of buying someone now and then immediately loaning him out? Is it because they think he'd be a £15m or £20m player next year but needs more development time?

As DLew says. Another 12 months getting regular first team football that he wouldn't get at Anfield. - He'll be 12m older, 12m wiser and 12m stronger. Plus the price is sorted and if he knocks in another 20 goals there's nothing Lille can do. Word actually has it that the deal was agreed in principal before the World Cup, including the price, so his performance there was in a way irrelevant.

Anybody watching the City-Liverpool game?

Only place I can find showing the game is ESPN Deportes. Anybody got a lead on an English stream?

Pitch is in awful shape, players are falling everywhere and honestly they're playing too hard because it's PL competition, I'm afraid of an injury to either side here

The ref just had mercy on Enrique there.  He blatantly tripped the Man City attacker, but only because he completely ate it on the turf laid over the infield dirt.

I'm warning you all now that we should expect to lose Sterling in two years time for a ridiculous amount of cash - probably more than 50M. The kid is frighteningly good already and is only going to improve under such a good coach. Every time I see him I'm shocked at the speed of his development in such a short space of time. Pace, increased power and a better tactical awareness at such a young age is scary.

Make the most of him, he's going to be the next world superstar.

Unfortunately, I agree 100% - I'd venture that he is gone next summer to one of the Spanish giants.  Hopefully Ibe is on the same developmental trajectory.  FSG's football player development machine!

I really like what I've seen of Origi. It would have been interesting to see him given a chance at Liverpool this year. But I can also see the reasoning behind keeping him at Lille for one more year where he'll get regular playing time while the big boys try to stay top 4 this year.

Origi also seems to be a similar player to Sturridge (only having seen the former at the WC). Sturridge is the key man this season and if he has another stormer this season, CJ's well-founded fears of Sterling being poached also apply to Sturridge. So, having a similar replacement in the fold makes a ton of business sense for the club. I am sure that if Sturridge stays Rodgers will find a way to play them together, as well.

If they make top four again this year and a deep run in the Champions League, why are they doomed to still being a selling club? Shouldn't they be able to build something akin to City, MUFC or Chelski?

You skipped the main board today, didn't ya? ;-)

If Sturridge builds on last season ad goes for 30, someone will offer silly money for him. PSG, AS Monaco...someone. Will FSG up the wages to keep him or trust in the player development machine?

It's too bad the Swiss Ramble seems to have stopped posting, because I think this could be a worthwhile rabbit hole for someone with 20 hours to research to go down.  But broadly, I think it's clear there are financial tiers of clubs, with the two Scotland South clubs at the top.  I don't know how they do it, but they seem to have the resources to spend 70m on a player when no one else can.  When a young-ish player has the kind of year that would line him up to play in their squads and earn that kind of cash, they swoop in.  The next tier is probably Chelsea, City, and PSG, with Man U, Bayern, and Monaco not far behind (Man U is telling everyone they can spend with the Viejo Firmo, but I'll believe it when they do it).  With its global commercial revenue, Liverpool can make that jump into the group that spends 40-50m on a player, but that probably requires some consolidation in the Top Four and CL.

Aren't they 1 and 2 in revenues? I've always assumed that their ability to take in money, even if they are spending it at a faster pace, has given them easy access to debt.

And I'm not Spanish you racists.

I was nominating experts, particularly ones who are known for their international acumen but not fans of the Old Firm.

Which is why I left Zomp, Zoso and sdiaz off the list.

Fine. If you want on the Committee to Determine Fitness of DLew's Attempted Re-Branding of the Barca-Real Rivalry as Viejo Firmo, you're on it.
