92 Wins.

It's a high volatility team, but I'm tired of the constant poo-pooing. So, 92 Wins.

I'm going with the idea that the health coin-flips will be positive for the 2023 Sox in a 2021 way - and there's a lot of upside to nearly everyone on the roster. I think the team is well-balanced for a Cora "starters play through the game" type offense. With health, the starters are better than last year (alas, alas, wither thou Wacha), and the bullpen will be surprisingly strong.

I think they'll be in the mix with the weaker schedule and the stronger farm system will translate into a Schwarber-like shore up for the final run.

I think the new rules will also benefit the team overall given youth, speed, and contact. But the Achilles heel will be strikeouts.
-Team leader in Wins? Sale
-Team leader in Saves? Jansen
-Team leader in ERA (qualifying)? Schreiber
-Team leader for Batting Average (qualifying)? Yoshida
-Team leader in HR? Devers
-Team leader in Stolen Bases? Mondesi
-Team leader in HBP? Turner
-Player who plays the majority of 2B games this season? Arroyo
-Player who plays the majority of CF games after the All-Star Break? Hernandez.
-Player who makes the Opening Day Roster (26 man), who subsequently spends the greatest number of days on the IL? Arroyo
-Pitcher not on the Opening Day Roster (26 man) who makes the greatest subsequent contribution (WAR)? Bello
-Position Player not on the Opening Day Roster who makes the greatest subsequent contribution (WAR)? Mondesi
-Pitcher not on the 26 man roster at any point last year (2022) who makes the greatest contribution (WAR)? Paxton
-Position Player not on the 26 man roster at any point last year (2022) who makes the greatest contribution (WAR)? Yoshida
-Player to throw the first punch of the year (no shoves - a true swing)? Duran
-Player with the greatest number of suspension days? Duran
-Stupidest Facial Hair at All-Star Break? Houck
What counts as qualifying for ERA?

(this is where I'm at on the spreadsheet so far)

One inning per team game played, so in a normal season,162 innings.
I know what counts in real life...I found it odd that the person who wrote the question chose Schreiber, though, & wondered if there were different rules for this competition.

In modern baseball picking a lower # of innings might be fun (120?).

Sox aren't going to steal many bases if a guy on the 60 day DL is going to lead the team in stolen bases!

Last year, Story led the team with 13 followed by Xander with 8. Mondesi had 20 steals in 50 games over the past 2 seasons. He’s hurt A LOT, but he steals a ton of bases when he plays. 133 SB in 358 career games.

No they're not. I just had a brain-fart.

And thank you for doing this JM3 - very cool to see the pics aggregated like this.

Ah - but this is a tie-breaker question, not a "accurately predict the most likely outcome out of a 100 simulated seasons" question. As such, people have already picked the win total they expect based on their own guess as to how the season will unfold. If you are picking low numbers, you should probably assume significant injury to key players.

(Another purpose of touching on the traditional categories is to get people to seriously consider who we're fielding. I hope it somewhat discourages hip-shot win picks.)

No problem - actually took a lot less time than I thought it would to compile. I'll post the rest later today.

Sorry if my post came across douchey. Was just asking because I needed to know which of Chawson's hypothetical answers to use for that question.

No shade. I appreciate you organizing this & the work put in. I just find things with a wider range of answers more fun. Even if this method is superior for picking the proper winner of the No Prize.

It’s funny to see Verdugo (15 career SB) and Hernandez (13) on this list. Interesting that it should be easier to steal bases this year, but the current roster doesn’t seem like one that will be able to do much in that regard.

Several people, including me, said no one would play the majority, but then went on to make a choice. I just wrote the answers as if the question is looking for who plays the "most" games. I can change those answers to "none" if it will be scored as the player actually having to play 82 games at 2B.

I think it was actually 3 or 4, but the other ones at least had a pitcher in the hitter spot so I felt comfortable switching the answers.
That's fine for these purposes, but FWIW, if we're down to a tie-breaker, we'll be taking a literalist approach. Your answer is your answer.

Well, it's time to start winnowing these away. The Sox are 69-66, with 27 games left, they have improbable ceiling of 96 wins and an equally improbable floor of 69 wins. A .500 campaign for the remainder puts them somewhere close to 83 wins. If they keep up their overall winning % thusfar (.511), they're closer to 84 wins.

Posters GLUED to our riviting final stretch run will doubtless include those in the 81-84 win range: @Sandy Leon Trotsky , @Skiponzo , @jwbasham84 , @Yaz4Ever , @Yelling At Clouds , @Saints Rest , @Harry Hooper , @derekson , @teds_head , @moretsyndrome .

With the way they are playing, and 18 of the final 27 against Baltimore, Tampa, and Texas, I may not end up being too far off.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Thanks to JM3, we also have a spread of the answers in tie-breakers.
Will go through the questions & do the breakdown of answers...
While the following is not definitive, I think it's interesting to see what's possible, and what's unlikely with a month left to play.

#1 Team leader in Wins?
Chris Sale 27
Corey Kluber 17
Brayan Bello 16
Garrett Whitlock 5
Nick Pivetta 3
James Paxton 1

Bello is currently at 10, with Pivetta 9, and Paxton 7. Sale and Whitlock are both at 5. So while it's possible they'd match Bello. . .

#2 Team leader in Saves?
Kenley Jansen 64
Tanner Houck 4
Garrett Whitlock 1

Jansen is at 29 and neither of the others have a save, so this is a lock.

This one might have been more fun as "Besides Kenley Jansen, who will lead the Red Sox in saves?"
Winckowski has 3 at the moment, with 6 others at 1.

#3 -Team leader in ERA (qualifying)?
Chris Sale 29
Brayan Bello 15
Garrett Whitlock 12
Corey Kluber 5
James Paxton 2
John Schreiber 2
Nick Pivetta 1
Tanner Houck 1
None 1
[no answer] 1

Bello is current front-runner.

#4 Team leader for Batting Average (qualifying)?
Masataka Yoshida 47
Rafael Devers 12
Alex Verdugo 4
Justin Turner 4
Christian Arroyo 2

Yoshida is at .294, with Turner at .285

#5 -Team leader in HR?
Rafael Devers 54
Triston Casas 12
Adam Duvall 2
Masataka Yoshida 1

Devers leads Turner 29-22, with Casas at 21.

#6 -Team leader in Stolen Bases?
Adalberto Mondesi 36
Kiké Hernandez 13

Trevor Story 5
Jarren Duran 4
[no answer] 4
Alex Verdugo 3
David Hamilton 2

Cedanne Rafaela 1
Christian Arroyo 1

Duran has 24, followed by Yoshida with 8. . .so unless Story or Rafaela goes out of their minds, this is essentially a lock as well.

#7 Team leader in HBP?
Justin Turner 30
Triston Casas 9
Rafael Devers 8
Alex Verdugo 7
Kiké Hernandez 5
Adam Duvall 3
Christian Arroyo 3
Don Baylor 1
Jorge Alfaro 1

Yoshida/Casas/Turner tie 1

Devers and Turner are tied at 9, with Yoshida at 7.

#8 Player who plays the majority of 2B games this season?
Christian Arroyo 42
Trevor Story 13
Adalberto Mondesi 7
Enmanuel Valdez 3
Kiké Hernandez 2
Bobby Dalbec 1

We'll need a slide rule for this one.

#9 Player who plays the majority of CF games after the All-Star Break?
Kiké Hernandez 37
Adam Duvall 20
Cedanne Rafaela 6
Jarren Duran 4
Raimel Tapia 1

Ditto, though it seems easier.

#10 Player who makes the Opening Day Roster (26 man), who subsequently spends the greatest number of days on the IL?
Chris Sale 16
Christian Arroyo 15
Adam Duvall 8
Corey Kluber 5
Kiké Hernandez 4
James Paxton 4*
Ryan Brasier 4
Connor Wong 3
Kenley Jansen 2
Kutter Crawford 2

Tanner Houck 2
Garrett Whitlock 1*
John Schreiber 1
[no answer] 1*

Kluber went on the IL from June 21 to July 21, but never made it back from rehab and was put on the 60 day IL. So I presume he's the front runner?

#11 Pitcher not on the Opening Day Roster (26 man) who makes the greatest subsequent contribution (WAR)?
Brayan Bello 41
Garrett Whitlock 11
James Paxton 8
Bryan Mata 5
Brandon Walter 2
Josh Winckowski 1*

At the moment, Bello is the clear leader.

#12 Position Player not on the Opening Day Roster who makes the greatest subsequent contribution (WAR)?
Trevor Story 29
Adaleberto Mondesi 16
Cedanne Rafaela 6
Jarren Duran 6
Enmanuel Valdez 4
Jorge Alfaro 3
Bobby Dalbec 1
Edwin Diaz 1
Brayan Bello 1*
Justin Turner 1*

Duran's the clear leader at 2.2 bWAR.

#13 Pitcher not on the 26 man roster at any point last year (2022) who makes the greatest contribution (WAR)?
Corey Kluber 38
Kenley Jansen 16
James Paxton 7
Bryan Mata 3
Masataka Yoshida 2*
Chris Martin 1
Victor Santos 1

Chris Martin is way out ahead with 2.7 bWAR.

(Interesting how many thought Kluber would be a real asset.)

#14 Position Player not on the 26 man roster at any point last year (2022) who makes the greatest contribution (WAR)?
Masataka Yoshida 50
Justin Turner 7
Cedanne Rafaela 3
Enmanuel Valdez 3
Adam Duvall 2
Nick Sogard 1
Triston Casas 1*

This one is close: Turner 2.3, Duvall 1.9, Yoshida 1.2.

#15 Player to throw the first punch of the year (no shoves - a true swing)?
None 14
Alex Verdugo 12
Justin Turner 5
Tanner Houck 5
Jarren Duran 4
Jorge Alfaro 4
Reese McGuire 4
Christian Aroyo 3
Adam Duvall 2
Chris Sale 2
Nick Pivetta 2
Triston Casas 2
Kiké Hernandez 1
Connor Wong 1
Joely Rodriguez 1
Raimel Tapia 1
Ryan Brasier 1

Tick tock.

#16 Player with the greatest number of suspension days?
Tanner Houck 12
None 9
Alex Verdugo 8
Chris Sale 7
Jarren Duran 6
Justin Turner 3
Reese McGuire 3
Kiké Hernandez 2
Adalberto Mondesi 2
Joely Rodriguez 2
Raimel Tapia 2
Ryan Brasier 2
Adam Duvall 1
Christian Arroyo 1
Corey Kluber 1
Jorge Alfaro 1
Kenley Jansen 1

Again, we wait. . .

#17 Stupidest Facial Hair at All-Star Break?
