But Joe, you told us all that Tampa Bay was a special fraternity.

Piker. Everyone knows you wait until Game 4 of the World Series to exercise your opt-out, not Game 3.

HAHAHA.

Both TB Rays fans are sad.

I wonder if its the LAD now, or he takes a year off. LAD have some talent so it's risky to wait, in case they win next year, making it tougher to get rid of Mattingly.

Part of me is sad, because hating the Rays is a lot of fun with Maddon around.

The other part is ecstatic because none of this is good for Tampa and fuck them.

Haha the huge Dodger fan in my office has no idea who he is. Tampa and LA--the two ends of the apathetic baseball fanbase spectrum.

Tell him he's the noun form of Mattingly.

The problem is that Dodgers' management supposedly likes Mattingly and said recently that he would be the manager next year.  So they're going to look disloyal and have egg on their face if they hire Maddon now.  Of course, they should absolutely do it, because Mattingly is terrible, but I'm curious to see what happens.

Edit:  I assume this means Dave Martinez finally gets a shot at managing (with the Rays), which is long overdue.

I think the "new guy hiring his own people" thing is enough to take the edge off this.

Twins? Dodgers?

Or you were fed a line of crap.

LA's already got a a 5/35 contract written up for Friedman. We're a find and replace away from a press conference.

Damn, I can't hate the Rays as much anymore. Well, at least I can remind my Dodger friends that John McNamara has more World Series wins as a manager than Joe Maddon has.
They still pay Ben Zobrist.

Would Theo and the Cubs give him a blank check?

Three managers in three years is a bad look, but they'll have to consider it.  Maddon certainly knows how to handle young players, and he might be a draw for free agents.

He could always return to Tampa with a better contract. Seems unlikely, though.

They were still discussing a contract extension.

“@TBTimes_Rays: Maddon said there was give and take with #Rays on a new deal but "we were still too far apart."”

Funny, if he sits out for the year, he's going to pop off in rumours all over the place. How secure is Farrell..?  Naaahhhhh.

Tampa kept saying payroll was going down, I guess Maddon figured he's done as much as he can with the roster as is.

Here's to a year of listening to Kruk and Maddon banter on the shift every Sunday night

To say he was considering LA at this point would feed into a possible tampering claim. Dodgers don't have a game for 5+ months, no reason to rush things on either side.

In other words... crack reporting there, Heyman.

I'm guessing that we'll see this from Heyman before long:

"@JonHeymanCBS:  later word: maddon considering LA as an option. he understands friedman is covering his ass right now."

Yea I am shocked people aren't seeing the Cubs here.  Maddon with that talent would be scary

Add to that the not-so-minor issue of Maddon's need to cement his "genius" legacy by being the manager of the Cubs' team that wins the World Series. The man has consistently sought ways to cultivate his image

Isn't it against the rules to get word to a prospective acquisition who has an opt-out that you'd be interested in his services?

From a poster on the Phillies board...

"Royals should fire Yost and hire Maddon before the start of tonight's game..... "

Dodgers, Cubs, or Rangers, though this post is the first to mention the Rangers in this thread.
