As of today, his FIP and xFIP are both over a half run below the AL average. His HR/9 innings is better than the AL average (1.02 vs 1.17). His BB% of 10.6% is a little high vs the AL average 8.8%, but his k% of 29.6% blows away the league average of 21.5%, so I'll take that combo. He is also dead on the average number of innings per start in the AL, 5 2/3. If you have a problem with him, you have a problem with someone who is performing like a significantly above average pitcher in this era.I mean, he hasn't really been, to be fair. His FIP, xFIP, and SIERA are all about a run above his actual ERA. Giving up a good number of home runs, and walking a ton.
None of that means he's not pitching well if they're still better than average, which they are. It means he's pitching well AND he's a bit lucky.I mean, he hasn't really been, to be fair. His FIP, xFIP, and SIERA are all about a run above his actual ERA.
Wouldn't it fair to say that the BB% is more a SSS thing? 9 out of 15 of those BB's have been localized to two starts. The control has been pretty decent in his other starts and historically he hasn't been a guy with crazy high walk-rates.I mean, he hasn't really been, to be fair. Yes, its a SSS, and none of it suggests he isn't going to pitch better and/or continue to produce like he did today. The ERA and strikeouts would indicate ace-like performance, however he's been pretty middle of the road overall. I think we need another month or so before we talk about jinxes.Wouldn't it fair to say that the BB% is more a SSS thing? 9 out of 15 of those BB's have been localized to two starts. 6 innings doesn't seem like much but he has faced the O's, Brewers, Cubs, and Cards in 4 of the last 5 games and all 5 were quality starts (he's also faced the Tigers). He should get some cookies soon and maybe a few more innings.Another middle of the road start by EdRo last night. While it could have easily gone much worse than it did, there were a few good defensive plays that helped him survive (Xander's catch in the 3rd, Mookie's throw in the 5th inning), he did seem to be able to bounce back in the 4th and 5th, and to overcome 2 out hit in the 6th to finish his outing properly.
Looks like this year he is getting a lot more strikeouts (10.7 vs. 8.4), and much lower WHIP (1.1 vs 1.3) than last year. If he can continue to miss bats, maybe it will be a good year for him.
The Globe alluded to how much direction and encouragement he's getting from Porcello and Sale (and Price when he's there). I imagine they have pushed the "grind it out" theory with him. Bend, don;t break, do the best you can to keep a chance to win. He's maturing, and that is a fantastic thing; talent like his coupled with maturity and the right emotional mindset on the hill will make him a very good pitcher, hopefully for a long time.He didn't really have his best stuff last night and still was able to grind through the 6 innings. That's a huge step forward for him. He's going to have a huge step up year if he stays on the bump.
Yea they said after the inning he gave up 3 runs Sale came up to him and said "this is where the men step up" or something to that affect. The Globe alluded to how much direction and encouragement he's getting from Porcello and Sale (and Price when he's there). If you look at his PitchFX track record, it's not unusual for him to hit 96, though he usually sits 93-94.MLB.com game day had him at 96 mph. Was that accurate? Is it me or have we not seen that before?
Yep. Since his first start (5 ip, 4 runs), his stat line is:6th consecutive Quality Start today
Hitters slashing .196/.271/.329 against him during that time. 178 batters faced. He's making the average hitter look worse than 2015 Pablo.Yep. Since his first start (5 ip, 4 runs), his stat line is:
44.1 ip, 2.64 era, 1.04 whip, 10.2 k/9
That's pretty sweet.

Baseball source: Eduardo Rodriguez going to DL with knee injury. Hurt in slip during warm-ups last night. Discomfort today. Details to come
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/clubhouse_insider/2017/06/eduardo_rodriguez_going_on_dl_with_knee_injuryAccording to the source, the injury did not affect Rodriguez enough physically for him to say he could not pitch, and after the game he did not want to use the incident as an excuse for his outing.
The Red Sox were aware of Rodriguez's fall but the left-hander kept telling them he was fine.
"I know we checked with him when he came in, checked with him in between every single inning, wasn't complaining of anything and we continued on," said Farrell after the game.
When Rodriguez reported to the visitors clubhouse today, he was in discomfort according to the source.
IDK, the actual fall didn't really look even remotely severe. I mean it was basically a baby tumble, he didn't seem to wince or anything, and he popped right back up shortly after.Should I be concerned about the fact that they let him pitch after taking this fall that led to a DL trip?
Actually, he didn't pop right up. Look at the videos again. Also, as someone with knee problems, I can tell you that in my case, I can turn funny and feel acute pain. Then it seems all right and I go about my business. But, later, the knee is killing me. I am about as far as one can get from an elite athlete, but on the other hand, nothing I do is as stressful as pitching off a major league mound.IDK, the actual fall didn't really look even remotely severe. Yeah, that's probably what happened.Oriole's probably booby trapped the Red Sox bullpen, or wherever it was he fell.
I realize they stated there was a spell that he sat on the ground. But again, it didn't initially come off as a "staying down because he was hurting" kinda moment imo. Especially considering it looked like the back round coach didn't even walk over until after he popped up and started walking away.Actually, he didn't pop right up. Look at the videos again. I'm sure he finds that very cumbersome/uncomfortable when he pitchesApologies in advance if this is a stupid question, but why isn't he wearing a brace or sleeve when he pitches?
Not a stupid question, but a brace isn't terribly effective at preventing this from being a problemApologies in advance if this is a stupid question, but why isn't he wearing a brace or sleeve when he pitches?
Is everything a game thread now? When he comes back next year, he should only be allowed to pitch off of flat surfaces unless he's pitching in a game.
To be replaced by Brian Johnson soon, no doubt.“@PeteAbe: Rodriguez on DL: seeing Dr. Andrews for a second opinion on Monday. Knee injury, hope is short-term. Brandon Workman recalled.”

http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2017/06/brian_johnson_boston_red_sox_d_2.htmlBALTIMORE -- Red Sox depth starter Brian Johnson was examined this morning after leaving his Triple-A Pawtucket start Saturday because of cramping in the hamstring.
It's nothing more serious than cramping.
"He's improved throughout the day and over the coming days, we're hopeful to get him back on the mound, get a bullpen (session in)," Red Sox manager John Farrell said following the Red Sox's 7-3 win against the Orioles at Camden Yards. "So until that time, he's improving."
ohnson was expected to start next weekend against Detroit in place of injured starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. He still hasn't been ruled out.
"He's in the mix," Farrell said. "There's not been a final determination yet."
I share this anatomical peculiarity... subloxated or dislocated my knees 9 times in the past 20 yrs.“@MikeSilvermanBB: E-Rod getting second opinion on knee, which subluxated, Monday. He has anatomical peculiarity in knee that makes him prone to sublux.”
