Portnoy coming on now.  Felger calls him "The most powerful media member in Boston sports".  He's going to skewer Felger and Mazz over their anti-Pats coverage.

He and Mike are friends but the conversation should still be funny.
One more reason to never listen to them again

Not a fan of any of them but I do find this entertaining.
I like that he is pretty much ignoring Mazz.

I can't listen much because of my work schedule.  I no longer work from home.

Before I got on the air I was told me not to talk about cheating scandal - "We're done with those calls for the day - keep it to football".  I initially wanted to talk about some of the other coaching scandals that were just brushed off as "gamesmanship" by the hypocritical media.  Then my caller ID started beeping....I got flustered.  Shit call.

Hope you're doing well, Sparky.

Here is the audio from Pornoy's apperance. It's broken up into 2 segments. http://boston.cbslocal.com/2015/01/27/felger-mazz-argue-over-deflategate-with-david-portnoy-of-barstool-sports/ I almost made it through all of it before my hatred for Mazz kicked in.
Alternative link for Felger & Mazz podcasts for those that would like to avoid the painful cbslocal webpage here.

I'm not a fan of Felger's or Portnoy's sportztakes but that was a very entertaining segment

I listened to this segment via podcast at the gym last night.

I wouldn't exactly say that Portnoy "crushed" them, but he did take them around the maypole a few times.  I actually thought he let them off the hook too easily.

But I did like that Portnoy framed the debate by saying, "I want to know what your beef is with the Patriots and why you are anti-Patriot everything.  Similarly... I'm actually very curious to know if you do this for ratings or if you seriously believe what you are saying."

And later... "Wait a minute, you seriously believe the Patriots cheated in SpyGate?"
"Yes."

If the situation was reversed and it was the Colts who won 45-7 and the Pats who were crying to the league about under inflated balls, Felger would be KILLING the Pats about it. We know this because that's exactly what happened last year when BB complained about Welker's pick play on Talib.

He would be telling them to man up and that they're just not good enough, etc. But because it's the Pats, they probably did it and 'it's about the integrity of the game!'.

The sad thing is that Felger could have had it both ways. He could have laughed it off as the Colts being sore losers, the league being a complete clown show AND he could have casually said that the Pats probably did it but who cares. But that wouldn't have tweaked Pats fans so that wasn't an option for him.

I generally enjoy his schtick and know what he's all about but from the little I've been able to listen to this week he's been insufferable.

Mad Dog: "the rest of America thinks the Patriots cheated." And now he's citing Aikman, Rice and Jaworksi to credit as a fact that the Pats cheated.

Man was that brutal. Not to mention completely inaccurate with no factual basis. They did not question him on anything. Over to EEI I go...

I'm not sure why anyone here is surprised, if anything... they are at least being consistent.  They are convinced that the Patriots cheated based on Spy Gate alone and whispers and rumors and are on record saying that there is pretty much nothing that the Patriots or NFL can do to convince them otherwise.  Why would they do anything other than nod their heads when Russo agreed with them?

Edit: For the record that is not a defense of them, I think they (or Felger at least) are being obtuse for the sake of the show and when they discuss it it makes my ears bleed.

First of all: Felger frames the Florio discussion with just two decontextualized facts:
  1. Balls were below allowed PSI
  2. A ball boy went into the bathroom with the balls for 90 seconds
And asks if those two were enough to punish.  :c070:

Florio says "circumstantial evidence is not bad evidence, it's just different evidence" and by different he means weak. He used the analogy that if there is snow on your car in the morning, and it wasn't there the night before, then it must have snowed over night. It's actually more like seeing wet grass and being sure that it rained last night when the lot has an in ground sprinkler system, too.

Gotta keep the narrative alive.

This is actually a good analogy.

Florio: the league isn't buying this 'dew' theory

Florio has been the biggest hack out of all of these guys.  All he does is try to find "sources" to confirm his already preconceived bias and agenda.

You know this really pisses me off.  They are not a national show, their audience is 99% Patriots fans, and this week of all weeks we don't want to hear Mad Dog rant how we cheat or Florio make nonsense claims about deflating balls in a bathroom in 90 damn seconds, this should be a week to celebrate a great team making it to the Super Bowl for the 6th time!! I understand they had to cover some of the ball "scandal" but giving those haters air time during THIS week is insulting to their fan base it really is.  I loved Felger and there are times when I still love him and I can take a different point of view but it seems like they are delighting in bitch slapping their fan base by having guests like that on to ruin what might have been really awesome radio this week, I feel like I won't even want to listen/watch them now even when this infuriating saga is over.

Oh I stopped last week because they were just awful but reading they had on Mad Dog (who I hear briefly when I'm on XM radio flipping stations) just really infuriated me.  I've no idea why anyone ever listened to Chris Russo because he's as shrill as nails on a chalkboard and the couple of times I've heard him he just doesn't know what he's talking about, I'm talking having basic facts wrong about his subject! and it's like he thinks if he just screams enough and talks fast enough it's some type of insight or something but he's been around forever so obviously someone likes that kind of radio but there was no need for a local Boston sports radio station to have him on to pollute the airwaves of Patriots fans, not this week.  It's insulting to their fan base it really is.

This is what they do.  The Red Sox win the World Series? Ortiz is on PEDs. Pedro makes the HOF? He was on PEDs. They want to suck the enjoyment out of everything even if they have to make stuff up.  Used to listen a lot, but won't ever give them another second of my time.

I was a big fan of this show when they came on. It was a breath of fresh air in the wake of the big show and they managed to fit in a bunch of hockey talk. However, between the slander Pedro show and the past few days of this deflategate talk, I can't take it anymore. It's too the point that I'm starting to turn my dial to EEI (or NPR) in the morning to avoid listening to them in the evening.

I agree. I never liked Mazz, as a writer or radio guy, but when the show started I thought it was fantastic. Then they realized they were popular and pivoted to trolling fans, calling every season in every sport a failure if there was no parade, calling owners cheap etc. I was listening the day they accused Pedro of using steroids and I turned it off immediately, and haven't been back since. It sucks because the early days of the show we're like a breath of fresh air after the EEI dominance throughout this era. The weird thing is, I've met Felger a few times before, and he's a pretty good dude in person. Too bad he's as irritating as an ingrown pubic hair on his show.

Welp. I had 98.5 on from listenting to some Gresh and Zo today.

Caught the premise of todays show. "Tom Brady doesnt seem right because he knows hes guilty" .

The other day, I finally figured out what is wrong with Felger (Mazz is hopeless). Back when he first started up his program, Felger had a little humility -- he failed miserably at two other places and went back to EEI on his knees. He was still a bit of an asshole, but it was a winking asshole. And he actually admitted when he was wrong and changed his mind.

When the Bruins traded Kessel's rights to the Leafs, Felger wanted them to trade the pick for a sniper. But caller after caller after caller told him that was insane there were two legit stars in the draft (Hall and Seguin) and the B's would get one of them. Felger did some research and admitted that he was wrong. In 2010, he allowed callers to talk about the World Cup. He even got into a bit too, despite not really caring (or knowing too much) about soccer. It was refreshing to have a host not treat his audience like morons.

"Felger and Mazz" have been number one for a long time and Felger's ego has grown quite a bit. He no longer listens to anyone. Not the callers. Not his colleagues. And certainly not his co-hosts. It's just hours and hours of Felger sermonizing about what he happens to think. Facts be damned. To whit, last week on his Comcast TV show he kept driving this point home: "This is different from SpyGate. The Pats look like they're beaten." And he asked Chris Gasper if he agreed. Gasper (who was in the locker room during SpyGate) said something to the effect of, "No. That's not true. In 07, the players were so spooked Kevin Faulk was the only guy who spoke with the press for four straight days." What did Felger say? "No. They're more afraid. I know it."

And that's what has become the MO of this show, Felger's right. He knows it.

The reason why a guy like Joe Posnanski remains readable and people like Peter King, Bill Simmons and Michael Felger are losing their audience is because the latter truly believe that everything that leaves their mouths is the word of god. There is literally no room to argue or learn or explore. Felger thinks that Tom Brady isn't "right" because he's guilty about something and that's the day's talking point. Simmons thinks that Brady lost the 07 Super Bowl because he spotted Brady talking to someone on the field instead of warming up "the right way" like he did in 01, 03 or 04. King is just a fuck puppet for Goodell. It's all insanity.

The fundamental problem is that Mazz doesn't provide a foil; he provides an echo (a shrill, high pitched one at that). That echo turns Felger's entire shtick into something grotesque and claustrophobia-inducing.

When paired up with people willing to roll their eyes at him from time to time (Amonte, Milbury, Gasper, Brown, or Holley), Felger can be downright endearing.

I periodically turn this program on to see what theyre talking about and they haven't once talked about anything other than deflated footballs in some context or another. We're going on how many days of the same non-story rumor-as-fact based coverage now? Just a joke of a show now. Amazing to read through the start of this thread and where they are now.

Keep listening. every segment starts with Felger saying "we're done talking about deflated footballs!" Then he has a guest on and, you know, you HAVE to ask guests about it because it's the story of the week. Then "We don't want to talk about it, but's all over our call screen so here you go everyone, talk about it."
Rinse, repeat

I don't know about Amonte, Milbury and Brown but he still tries to push his agenda with Holley and Gasper. And even when they refute it, he still pushes it.

Mazz checked out years ago. It's amazing to me that he shows up on time for work.
