Go f*ck yourself
Also the 3pt contest never consists of the #1-4 leaders in 3pt shooting percentage. It’s just (usually) a collection of very good 3pt shooters. 40th, 20th, whatever. Plus, who gives a shit?

I get you're asking a good message board question and not otherwise.

That clearly stated, I totally love the team pumping up its guys for these kinds of things and could not care less if they deserve it! I want guys to feel like Celts have their backs, and if comparatively large Celtics fan base gets substantively less-worthy Celtics into competitions and awards that helps the team attract guys in future. So go Celts PR team and we here (and the ever-active NBA podcast world) can debate the actual merits separately.
Agreed with all you said.

I'm also sure there's better stats / approach than just looking at 3P% for figuring out who 'deserves' to go.

Top of the head, start by filtering out guys with low mins or attempts. I'd love to see something like 'clutch 3P%' to factor in (3s to go tie or go ahead late). And potentially sort / apply factor to corner 3s vs elsewhere (granted, they count the same in-game but in the 3P contest you need to take 3s from all around the arc).

I love them all trying to get White on all star team and Hauser in 3pt contest. I bet the 2019 team never did this stuff to help each other out :)

It's someone else's problem if they belong or not!

I appreciate the PR...but does he actually belong? I took a look at this season's numbers and he's ranked 40th

Season Leaders | Stats | NBA.com

And it's not like the guys above him are low-volume guys.

Also - Grayson Allen is having a great year by the looks...
He's 35th by made 3Ps if that helps. :)

I don't know whether he should be invited - I mean his teammate is among the league leaders in corner 3P% and wouldn't it be a hoot if he was invited? - but Scal said on one of the broadcasts that Sam would not be the type to do well as he jumps on every shot so that would slow him down plus hinder him in getting the ball from the rack. Scal said that guys who do well really shoot basically set shots - like Jrue.

Hopefully they invite some new guys like Nesmith or Isaiah Joe or Jalen Williams (if he doesn't make the All-Star team).

It's really amazing there are 49 guys on the list who are shooting 40% or better from the 3P line and they've all taken more than 100 3PA.

I assume things like this might help Hauser get a small shoe deal and help him financially outside of his contract. It’s good to do for your players.
I wonder if Hauser's agent negotiated some bonus for the 3P shooting contest? Seems like an easy way to try to get his client more money if he outperforms his contract (which he has).

the entire "All-Star Game weekend" festivities have me yelling at clouds, what a complete waste of time.
I find Vegas Summer League & January games in Maine more intriguing.

BUT the players care about having their egos stroked by the NBA suits, fanboys, & media sycophants while they flaunt their inner Globetrotters.

I've read stories about players inviting their entire encourage and spending huge $$$ for a weekend party.

I gained respect for Jimmy Butler when he sat it out to let Kemba play on his bum knee. Elam Ending madness!

Hauser falls well within the margin of error of the top shooters for sure. Dame, who won it in 2023, shot 32% in 2021-22 then 37% the first half of last year. Also Tatum competed, who shot less than 36% the first half of last season.

But that is exactly why he has less of a chance in being select the league seems to be taking more big names in this contest than specialists like Craig Hodges in the early days. The biggest names don't want to risk injury in the dunk contest so the 3-point competition is a good place to get some airtime, with less joint impact and more aerobics.

The campaign doesn't hurt though, and may help get Sam the 7th or 8th slot.

How about a consecutive FT contest? Two guys, either end of the court....1st one to miss when other makes is out.

Julius fucking Randle was invited to the 3 point contest last year. .332 for his career, .325 over the last 2.5 seasons, and shot .338 through the first half last year. I am not exaggerating when I say that I could easily come up with 100 players better suited for an invite than that bricklayer.

They might as well just have the poorest high-volume shooters in their own contest.

I think Scal is talking out his ass here. There have been all sorts of jump shooters to win this thing. The only set shot kind of guy in the recent past was Towns 2 years ago

Impossible. Scal never says ridiculous things with the certainty of an omnipotent being.

Also, his feelings about a player heating up after a basket or a review or momentum or anything really are always 100% correct.

In all seriousness, I adore Scal but he might as well be doing the Ace Ventura bit when saying stuff like that. He ass talks more than just about any color person in the NBA.

Actual percentages matter very little from my recollection. Damn, we’ve had players not even in the league anymore participate.

It didn’t look horrible live but he didn’t return to the bench I don’t think. Hoping they were just being cautious.

Abby said that he wouldn’t return to the game but it isn’t a serious concern (I’m paraphrasing). I believe she led with “good news regarding Hauser” or something similar.

Hauser likely breaks Klay’s record of 14 three’s in a game tonight without the injury. His teammates would have know what’s up and looked for him to get it and the Wizards certainly weren’t going to put up much resistance. Perfect storm. Too bad.

Benches and the first row of seats are too close to the floor. But the owners aren't giving up a row of lower level seats so these type of injuries are the result

Not to mention the row of cameramen sitting under the basket to catch footage for the next “Where Amazing Happens” ad.

I was actually relieved to see that he stepped on someone's foot, rather than just some non-contact thing, which always screams "torn something" to me.

Yeah. Assuming he's OK, that's the worst part.

Just ran into his sister, who works with me. She was at the game last nite and says he's OK. Just rolled his ankle.

Last night in the 4th, after Hauser went 5-6 through the first 3 quarters, Chicago made some real defensive effort to stay on him.

He's improved his ability to come around screens, step into the shot, etc. He's been above 40% each year but now he is doing that on a more difficult shot selection.

But 2nd on his own team, which is amazing.
the funny thing is if you said at the beginning of the season that Hauser would shoot 44% from 3 the season, I'd say yea that makes sense.

If you said Jrue would and have the highest Corner3% ever we'd have laughed. I could see him smashing that can't shoot in the playoffs meme that circulated after the trade

Al Horford has crept up to 42% and 15th in the NBA

It’s almost as if the quality of the shots a player gets has some bearing on his shooting %.

Another example is DWhite. He was what - about 35% from 3P with SAS? POBOBS remarked at the time of the trade that he thought DW would shoot much higher than that w/ BOS since he was going to get way more open shots. I’m sure he thought the same with Brighton. And with Jrue.

Indeed. Open3s, C&S3s, Corner3s, PaintTouch3s, and LeftsideTatum3s ;) are all boosting the teams' 3Pt%

It's also creating a "knock-on" effect for teammates to be their best selves

IF a JAY drive to the hoop draws a double & open 3s,
does the threat of a Hauser 3pt shot open up driving lanes for the JAYS (& open 3s for teammates)?

Yes, particularly now that they're running actions specifically to get him movement shots, and now that other teams are getting more and more desperate to shut down those shots.

He has a shot to get into Klay/Korver territory in terms of being terrifying away from the ball, with screening actions just for him. He's a really, really good shooter, and the shots he's taking are not easy in general.

Also, his footwork taking handoffs off screens is leveling up a lot now.

Hauser is the guy I want signed more than Holiday or Kornet, from the bench. He also feels like the guy most likely to be signed away for a huge contract.

Hauser is here next year on a team option. Many if not most of the time these extensions get worked out because Hauser is only making 2 million next year.
