Virginia is really really fricking good.  Good chance (home to Clemson, @ Boston College, home to GA Tech and @ VA Tech) that they'll be 19-0 when they meet Duke on the 31st.

Yeah that was a pretty easy upset to see coming, I thought. Other than o/u I never bet on UNC, but occasionally I will throw a bit of money on ACC match ups because, watching this league year after year, some things stand out. These rivalry games are as much about where each team is at a particular point in the season. Duke was not playing well and looked like they were ready to get tripped up. NC State had to take one of the three from the brutal UVA, Duke, UNC stretch and had UVA in a game until the last seven minutes. With NC State's ability to get hot from three, at home, needing a big win desperately to have a chance to get in on the bubble again, and Duke playing poorly, this was not a shock.

well....
yeah, obviously a different team than we saw earlier this year, which K has been saying publicly the past few weeks.  Same defensive issues as last year.   Not sure if it's the freshmen starting to think towards the draft and various skills they think they should be showing off (and failing at this), or if the coaches/media have hyped up ACCACCACC so much that they're playing scared now.

the kyrie/rivers/jabari/jahlil one and done train isn't working so well when they're being integrated in to a mix of 2nd and 3rd year players.

The first 10 years of KenPom.com, the Blue Devils ranked in the top 25 of adjusted defense all but one season -- and they were 36th in 2009. The past four seasons, their best rank has been 31st.

Not good.

Seriously though, look at this egregious home cooking for the Johnnies:

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400587943

Go to 0:20 (20 seconds into the highlight).  The St. John's player releases a deep 3 like a third of a second after the shot clock expires (3 seconds before the half ends), K POINTS IT OUT to the refs, and somehow it stands - even though there was a 20 minute halftime to review it.  WTF?!?!?  Watching it live I could tell it was late, people around me were watching replays on their phone showing it was late, and yet the 3 points stood.  Pretty meaningful error.

The shot clock running out isn't reviewable at that point in the game.

Not a great game by any means, but this team did show some toughness there. The main issue is that without Winslow, they don't have much of a defensive identity, since Jahlil is pretty soft on D and their guards continue to get beat on screens. Not sure how to fix it but any type of deep run will need a healthy Winslow to provide some pressure on the defensive end. I did like the look with Plumlee and Jahlil in at the same time yesterday, but I don't know if you can do that regularly against smaller teams that will eat them up. Offensively, they're fine, but need a more consistent defensive effort to be where they need to be.

Like this Tar Heel team a lot.  They've developed toughness through the year and keep finding ways to grind out games and win even when things don't go perfectly like tonight when the Orange was forcing a bunch of turnovers.  They go to Louisville and have Virginia at home Saturday and Monday...going 2-0 there would be awesome.

I don't disagree with any of that but what is up with Winslow on offense? Classic freshman hits ACC play slump?
He's hurt as shit. Did you watch the last game? Landed on his shoulder and got drilled in the ribs. He played 10min against st j, couldn't jump, so they took him out.

Yeah he's beat to hell. Having all kinds of shoulder and rib problems so he's just not useful right now. Tough week ahead, need to win at least one at UVA or ND.

I missed it save the last 6-7 mins once they were down 61-51 and came back. Damn.
He got hurt the game before that.  But yeah, it sucks.

Notre Dame favored in this game FYI.  Winslow starting which is great for his health signs.

50% from the field for ND. Still not good enough.
To be fair they've hit some circus shots, and they are the #1 offense team in the country.

Over 50% in the second half too. This team can't defend. They might win a game or two in the tourney but this team is sweet 16 at best.

No interior defense - Okafor is worse at that than Parker was.  Also freshman legs pretty evident in second half.

rematch in cameron in 10 days, should be a good one

nice to have some good teams in the ACC again

"Rasheed has been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program," coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a release. "It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner. After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations, it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program."

Will be interesting to find out how he wasn't conducting himself. No prior public disciplinary items to speak of.

This team is a lot less hate-able without sulaimon and his flops.

This team is going down first round no matter what seed they end up with. Which will probably fall to a 4 or worse the way things are headed.

Chill your butt. They are in a stretch of playing top 10 teams on the road - few teams win those games no matter how good you are.

Duke's February schedule is much kinder, which should give them some breathing room to reinvent themselves without Rasheed.

Not all that worried after that game as a UVA fan. Don't think most (any?) teams will be able to bail themselves out with a final 11 possessions averaging 2.55 points.

Duke had 34 points with 10 minutes to play and scored 35 in the final 10 minutes. Without any intentional fouling. Insane.

2nd half of UNC-UVA game tonight was what I expected 2nd-half of Duke-UVA to be.  But UNC just doesn't have shooters to open up space in the paint like Duke did in the final 10:00.  UVA is so good at wearing an opponent down with their defense.  Having said that, they are starting to show holes in the D on the inside and need to tighten that up soon.  They have a great coach and I expect that will be fixed.

UNC really doesn't do anything well offensively other than hit the glass and create 2nd-chance Pts.  Would actually love to see them play Arizona in the tournament, a team that looks good on paper only because no Pac-12 team bothers to try to get offensive boards in any game ever!
