UNH with FBS football is laughable.
Good point, I remembered they made the Quarters of the FCS playoffs 5-6 years ago but now I see they had 4 regular season losses (although 1 to #1 at that time JMU) that year anyway.

I amend to MD AND WV

I was just saying that from a financial and facility standpoint. UNH is not exactly set up or will ever be set up for big time college football.

Atlantic coast conference to all coast conference. If those calls are true, it has to mean they know FSU and another (at least 1) are making an announcement. Things can get real exciting

If the ACC adds Cal and Stanford and gets rid of FSU, how much does that boost their average SAT score?

FSU doesn’t really belong in a conference with BC UVA Duke UNC Wake Cal and Stanford, does it?

With all the increased travel distances and sometimes having to go coast to coast, when do these players actually, ya know, go to class?
Most college students can stack all their classes on two days of the week. I teach two classes a semester at the University of Oklahoma, both on Tuesdays/Thursdays. I will often see the same students in both classes because they take all their classes on those days. It's helpful not only to athletes but to students who work while at school.

Cal and Stanford sure belong in the ATLANTIC COAST conference, don't they?

This whole thing is just ridiculous.

FSU ain’t going anywhere. No one in the ACC is. For now. None of them are going to test the GoR. Once we’re 3-4 years out from the expiration of the GoR, then sure.

We have a Big Ten conference with 18 members and a Big 12 conference with 16 members.

Sums up the state of the American college system quite well, actually.

It is, before this current round of realignment I used to laugh at the fact that PSU, Pitt, and WVU are all within 3 hours of each other, but in different conferences. PSU a midwestern conference, Pitt a southern conference, and WVU a southwestern conference.

Not only that, they were historic rivals - not surprising given their proximity - but that stuff just doesn't matter any more.

Apparently the interest in Cal and Stanford from the ACC is because ESPN wants a late night TV slot (for cheap presumably)

Dunno if they would join as Football members only or even how serious the ACC is about doing it. Obviously it'd be crappy for whoever gets stuck playing them at 10 PM EST.

Couldn't adding schools and forcing teams to play schools out west be a breach of contract for what the ACC schools signed up for and thus negate the previous contract/grant of rights that is keeping all of the ACC schools in line?

You're talking about one game a year out there at most (or two if they set it up so that the team stayed there and played both of them; then the next year they stayed at home). Don't see the fuss.

Those two are tied very closely. Actions have consequences when you sue two members and the conference in the not so distant past.

Congrats. That has nothing to do with what I said nor anything I really care about. You asked about why they are having difficulty getting into the ACC. I provided you a seemingly rational answer. Do you agree?

I wasn't being antagonistic about anything so not sure why you are. You could be right. My response was simply stating that even if UConn doesn't get into one of the power football leagues that the success of the athletics program as a whole has not suffered much.

I think the best bet for the Pac-4 is to absorb the MWC.
Whole hog? If anything, I think I'd be tempted to take SDSU and BSU or maybe UNLV and then try to take my favorite AAC schools to set up a division in central time. If you just reload with schools out west, you have the same problem as the Pac 12 with worse schools.

WSU
OSU
Cal
Stan
SDSU
BSU? UNLV?

CSU
Air Force
SMU
Memphis
Tulane
UAB? UTSA?

Fake edit: Looks like SDSU had the same idea: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/san-diego-state-fails-in-attempt-to-create-new-power-five-conference-with-pac-12-mountain-west-aac-members/

The CAA is such a disaster. I know Richmond and W&M don't want to lose UNH, URI, etc., but this is getting ridiculous.
As a URI fan I'll chime in here. Once the conference added Campbell, Hampton, Monmouth, and North Carolina A&T, going to 16 was the most rational course of action because now you have an even number of teams, you can have even north/south divisions, and you can have 4 four team scheduling pods.

I do wonder though if at some point you see Albany, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Richmond, Villanova, and Bryant break off into a new football only conference under the America East banner.

Actually it came out yesterday that if AZ and the other 2 didn't jump ship, UConn would have been the next choice for the BIG12 or whatever. The commish is really pushing them, the schools are skittish

Now there are rumors that the ACC is looking into SMU. What does UConn have to do to get a look????
In fairness from what I read it didn't sound like the ACC was looking into SMU so much as SMU begging the ACC to take them and offering not to take any revenue for the first 6-7 years. And the ACC seems to have promptly said thanks but no thanks.

Right, but without a championship game to resolve the division winners, it's just a bloated mess.

I feel like if Maine/UNH/URI were happy traveling to Richmond, the conference wouldn't have expanded in the first place.

I don't think the lawsuit has anything to do with it. If Gene is to be believed BC didn't want them in because he wanted New England to themselves. Also back when Louisville got in UConn was the choice until FSU & Clemson didn't want them because of football. And on a much smaller scale when UConn got into Hockey East BC voted for them . I assume if BC was still offended by the lawsuit they would have done everything to keep them out of the only sport they are competitive in?

I know that the AE football league was talked about for years, but the leadership at the time in the AE wanted no part of it.

BC is not the only school that got sued and, regardless, is one vote out of many. The ACC as a whole got sued. I imagine some may still be sore about that on top of them providing nothing from a football perspective. Nobody cares about any other sport in the context of conference realignment.

I don’t think @kenneycb suggested that conferences besides the ACC would balk at inviting UConn because there was litigation between UConn (and others) and the ACC (and certain member schools) 20 years ago.

UConn will have trouble getting an invite because its football program is structurally disadvantaged — small stadium, no history of financial or on-field success, no natural recruiting base. No amount of basketball success can compensate for that. There are plenty of programs already in the P4-5 that are similarly situated, but that’s apples and oranges. The benefits of incumbency are massive; iirc, Temple is the only school that managed to get booted from a major conference, and they were a football-only member (and so may have had more limited rights — I don’t know).

If four new conferences were formed today and drafted 16 schools each, UConn would probably get drafted right around the end. Unfortunately for UConn, that’s not how it works — they aren’t going to oust Wake Forest, Kansas, BC, Northwestern, or Vanderbilt from their comfy perches.

Pitt was a big part of the lawsuit and they got in.
The lawsuit was regrettable in that it was not realistically going to stop the three schools from leaving but the stated concept from the Big East schools was that they poured money into new facilities with BC and Miami stating they had no interest in leaving the conference to their face while active looking to bolt behind their backs.

Regardless BC and Syracuse will never allow UConn into the conference. They want nothing to do with UConns athletic department getting an extra 30 million while being on even recruiting ground with them re: football.

Which seems silly to me considering no northeastern schools outside of maybe penn state will ever compete for a championship in football anyway. So why not keep the regional rivalries.

BC and Syracuse aren't calling the shots in the ACC. UConn's not on the table because they don't have a football program capable of expanding the size of the ACC pie enough to justify slicing it one more way. That's the bottom line.

We'll see if Jim Mora can change that. UConn is definitely headed in the right direction.

I suspect it’ll take UConn a decade of being a top 25 football program to drive media value for a conference. Which is unlikely.

Simply put: UConn was too late. They should have upgraded football to 1-A status in the 80s. That *might* have given them a window to develop a nationally competitive program and set them up better for the realignment that began in the 90s.

At this point they’d need to turn into an east coast Oregon to be attractive to what soon will be the Power 4 (soon to be the power 2.5 after that).

It is the most Connecticut thing ever that they built their stadium off-campus.

I like the stadium. It's a good place to see a game. But it's not big enough. And it's not on campus. The best selling point of college football is the student involvement/game day atmosphere. Looking at the Pratt & Whitney plant just doesn't do it for me.

Rentschelar stadium was fine when uconn was in a conference and we’re packing the house against Big East football rivals.
RGIII in his heisman year said the rent was right up there with Texas and Oklahoma as the toughest places he ever had to play. And yes, UConn won that game. Just as they went into Notre Dame and beat them within their first 7 years in big time footbal. Just as that same year tbey smoked Steve Spurrier and South Carolina in a bowl game.
UConn’s athletic department is as good as anyone’s in the country pound for pound when you look at the money coming in and the production.l coming out. It’s ridiculous they aren’t in a P5 conference but ultimately in the end I guess it doesn’t matter because from a football standpoint it will be Big 10 and SEC and maybe the other schools will smarten up and pull tbeir ADs back to local

Since 2000, they have had 6 seasons of .500+ ball. 9 seasons they have won 3 or less games. They (along with UMASS) may be the worst D1 football program in the country.
