I hadn't realized just how bad Varsho's numbers are. That trade is looking like a straight up disaster for Toronto so far.

Interesting. But Moreno has been a 1.9 bWAR catcher and Gurriel has been a 1.5bWAR outfielder. And Moreno has the most control left of any player involved in the trade.
But it was a positional thing, TOR still had Jansen and Kirk, so they went after OF defense with Varsho and Kiermaier. They signed Kiermaier for that roster spot to just 1/9 and he has 3.1 bWAR, so that has to factor in there somehow IMO.

Anyway, long way to go in this one, especially curious to see how the three catchers perform over time.

Heckuva game between the Jays and Dodgers too, tied 2-2 in the 7th. Betts has looked great at 2B.

Sort of, kind of ex-Red Sox Brusdar Graterol *was* dealing to the heart of the Jays’ lineup but just coughed up a lead on a Chapman bomb. Damn it.

His overall stuff and his stats are still impressive. Certainly a lot more than Jeter Downs.

They’ve been incredibly scrupulous about him avoiding lefties. Only 14 PA (and zero hits) this year.
Sure but he's still hitting RHP a lot better than he has in a while. He's got a 131 wRC+ vs RHP this year after a 69 last year and a 70 in 2021.

Incidentally maybe they want Kiké back as a platoon partner for him?;)

Ahh, it wouldn’t be a pennant race if we weren’t counting on Tilt to hold the line.

For sure, just think the way they’ve handled him has been smart. I’ve thought for a while, the Dodgers are a likely destination for Kique (and that he’ll turn it around with a change of scenery).

It'd probably be best for everyone. And they do need a RHH OF to platoon with either him or Outman.

Edit: Or Peralta

Seems like a long-shot still, but Felix Bautista might be building some momentum to make a run at the AL Cy Young. The strength of Baltimore is their bullpen and Bautista feels like he has slammed the door on a bunch of victories for them. He's 5-1, leads the league in games finished and saves. 0.92 ERA, an ERA+ of 457. WHIP of 0.857. He's struck out 96 batters in 49 innings. He's up to 2.9 bWAR.
And we all know what that one loss was... Duvall baby.

The only person in the Yankees' starting lineup with an OPS over .800 is someone named Billy McKinney. The 2004 version of Miguel Cairo would be hitting cleanup for them these days.

I haven't seen the official time, but my clock says Aaron Civale and the Guards bullpen just shut out the Royals in 1:54.

EDIT: They're allowing more time after the game before the post-game fireworks because it's not dark enough yet.
The Royals overly aggressive lineup is a dream match-up for Civale. He and the pen finish off Kansas City in less than 2 hours for the second time this month.

Sending up one useless catcher for another useless catcher in a big spot was a nice touch.

It's been a lot better than the World Series they played 40 years ago.
Phillies were coming off a great NLCS win vs the Dodgers (and a dominant division win). They were a very good team and were totally dominated by Baltimore. Two first year managers BTW

Soto goes yard. Perdomo for the Pirates drills Machado with the next pitch square in the back at 98 mph. Umps tossed him without any warnings. Not sure if it was on purpose but it was certainly questionable and the umps did a good job keeping control.

Crazy ending to TOR/LAD:

4-3 TOR after 8, they tack on 3 top 9 to go up 7-3, the Dodgers score 4 to tie it in the 9th on 5 singles and a walk. 7-7 after 9.

10th inning: Mookie in RF and Will Smith at C combine for a great play at home to keep it at 7, then Outman hits a ball off the top of the wall, barely out of the reach of Kiermaier, to win it, brutal loss for TOR.

Looking at it now, such an old team. They had three key guys from The Big Red Machine (Rose, Morgan, Perez), 42, 39 and 41 respectively, plus their best pitcher was a 38 year old Steve Carlton.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHI/1983.shtml
Their nickname was "The Wheeze Kids". John Denny, who went 19-6 with a 2.37 ERA and won the Cy Young Award, was their ace that season, and their closer was Al "Mr. T" Holland. Their third best starter was young Charles Hudson, who would have been a natural for the 1986 World Series. They went 1-11 against the Dodgers in the regular season but went 3-1 against them to take the NLCS.

And their manager was nicknamed "The Pope". Paul Owens was the GM and fired Pat Corrales and took over the job himslelf. Seems like that happened in the 80's. I cannot visualize Chaim Bloom, or Theo in a baseball uniform managing the team (BT I never understood the manager having to wear a uniform but that's another thread).

They caught fire in the last few months plus the NLCS. I remember Gary Mathews being on fire. BTW this Phillies team was the last gasp. They began a downward spiral right around this time, having been very good in the laste 70s and early 80s.

I followed the Phillies for a while at that time, and the birth of ESPN helped.

Sad to see Bard implode this afternoon. 4 walks (1 intentional) and a HBP in 0.2 IP as the Rox cannot hold a 4-1 lead in the Bottom of the 9th. 8 strikes on 24 pitches. No idea why the manager walked the bases loaded with 2 outs when Bard couldn’t find the plate. Walked in the tying run on 4 pitches that weren’t close.

I can't think of a conference/league champion in Philadelphia that's talked about less than the 1983 Phillies.
They suffer from the same problem as the 1979-80 Flyers---they missed out on winning a title, and they were too close in years to teams that had (1973-74/74-75 Flyers, and the 1980 Phillies). For instance, who remembers now that the 1979-80 Flyers "broke" the 1971-72 LA Lakers record of most consecutive games without a loss? (The parenthesis is because the Flyers team went 35 games without a loss, but of course that includes ties, while the Lakers won 33 games in a row.) But no one makes a big deal about that team because they lost the Stanley Cup to a young Islanders team that finished 25 points behind them, and was just starting their run of four Cups in four years,
