Tampa has first and third no one out in the ninth. Hit into a triple play. Angels up in the ninth. Tie game 6 -6
Edit : Tampa challenged block at plate. Play stands.
They did a two-for-one, challenging both the call at first and the call at the plate. Both calls were confirmed.

The Mariners are killing Framber Valdez. Sox need to take 4 of 6 from the Astros in their two upcoming series, because the Mariners look poised to run away with WC2 at this rate.

That M’s pitching staff is gonna be really tough in the playoffs. Not as high end as other teams yet, but it’s deep.

Gunnar Henderson gave up the cycle by continuing on to second in the 8th. Orioles bench looked like they were mad he didn't stop at 1st.

They were playing the A's so an 11-1 lead is pretty safe.

I wonder if they ultimately respect the move or if he’s like Serpico now.

In a world where a guy tried to get a triple double by shooting the ball at his own hoop for a garbage time rebound, I certainly believe that guys have just stopped at first in that situation but I never remember it actually happening.

I've seen it a few times. Once in person at a Jays game where Kelly Gruber became the first Jay ever to hit for the cycle. He needed a single, smoked one into the gap, and pulled up at first before the fielder actually got to the ball.

More evidence to back up my belief that “the cycle” is the single worst lauded accomplishment in professional sports. It’s just about the only “accomplishment” you can fail by improving your performance.

I remember Jeff Frye getting a lot of attention for doing it. The manager had told him beforehand that if the situation came up he should stop at first base and I think the 1st base coach grabbed him or demonstrably threw up his hands.

Also, this has nothing to do with pulling up at first for the cycle, but Scott Cooper had to take one of the weirdest routes to get one. In his 3rd at-bat, he hit what was clearly a double and an error – Vince Coleman easily reached the carom but completely whiffed on it which was the only reason Cooper continued running. They didn't charge an error on it, but Cooper tried for an in-the-park home run and was thrown out at the plate, leaving him with a triple.

Well if I am Gunnar Henderson and the O's have an 11-1 lead late (I assume late because he needed a single for the cycle) I stop at 1st and it makes no difference in the game. My guess is he went by instinct. But the cycle is meaningless, it does noting to counting stats (as a matter of fact it hurts them in this case) except to say one got one.

At least a triple double counts in the stats (even if he did it on purpose).

This is an interesting point. I am no @Brand Name , but based on some quick looks on Stathead:

(All include zero singles)
Two HR + 2B + 3B = 20 games
Two double + HR + 3B = 8 games
Two triple + 2B + HR games = 2 games

Cycle: 299 games

So, the non-cycle 4 XBH games are way more rare, and should be celebrated as such.

Also, as far as I can tell, there have been zero cycles hit that included multiple home runs or triples and only six that had two doubles.

(Caveat, I am only one coffee into my day, and thus cannot be entirely trusted)

Big week for the A's... they are playing the Royals, then 4 against the White Sox. After that, their schedule gets real tough. But if they are going to make a run at the 03 Tigers they are going to have to rack up some L's here.

Thank you kindly. I’m not much though!

However, 8 cycles exist with multiple home runs exist since 1901. George Brett’s in 1979 was especially stylish as his second long ball in May 28th that year came via a walk off shot in the 16th.

Only one exists with multiple triples: Hoot Evers in 1950, in a game that saw his Detroit squad tie Cleveland 13-13 after 10. You might recall Evers as part of the Johnny Pesky deal from 1952.

I’m also counting 16 multi-double cycle games since 1901.

Seattle puts up 5 runs in the 1st inning without Julio playing thanks to a wild pitch and two errors by Chicago. Mariners are living a charmed life right now.

Wow, the Giants got unlucky. Trea Turner hit a rocket that still should have been a game ending double play. Instead it hit the pitcher, and the deflection took an angle that the second baseman wasn't expecting... and it got through. Became a walkoff for the Phillies.

Rangers lose again. Six game losing streak now has Houston .5 back and Seattle 1 back. It’s crazy that the Mariners could end up winning the division.

Rays 5-2 and have scored 61 runs since Wander Pipp went on vacation. Basabe on a 7 WAR pace, .846 OPS, 134 OPS+ , had a grand slam last night in the 9 run 8th inning outburst.
