Schefter is saying right now they have no plans to bring in another QB. They hope Jimmy G. finds a way to play Thursday but it's a long shot. More likely that's he's the emergency #2 QB. Couched it by saying that this plan is subject to change.
Seems like a pretty dumb plan to me. There's zero downside in bringing in a veteran.
I agree rodderick. Unless they have good reason to believe JG could go if necessary, I can't believe it's all or nothing with Brissett.

Guys, I say it's time to move away from unrealistic options. That includes Manning and (sorry SF121) Tebow.
I'm not going to give you too hard a time about this, but you just implied Ryan Lindley is a "realistic" option. Believe me, if that becomes relevant I am never, ever going to let you forget it. Ever.

Unlike the rest of these chuckleheads, my unrealistic option has four checks and a check-plus. No one else has more than two checks. Point, Mebow. You go sit quietly and contemplate how wrong you are. Judgment day is coming, pal. You're on the naughty list as of ... now.

The downside of bringing in a veteran is the roster spot. If Brissett gets hurt they have literally no chance to win. They will just let JE hand off the rest of the game and punt it. There is no point on wasting the time / money / roster spot on a vet.

Edit: or what several others have said

Right. If you're going to advocate having four QB roster spots, I think you need to at least say who gets cut for one week of Lindley. Rowe? Valentine? Do we have someone expendable on the 53?

Rowe to IR, Jonathan Jones, Harbor or Derby, or LaAdrian Waddle seem the most obvious options. Valentine would be crazy considering they just used a third on him and he played over Anthony Johnson (healthy scratch) yesterday. They're going to lose one or two of these guys in two weeks anyway when Brady and Ninkovich return from suspension, so I don't think it's the end of the world to make that move early.

If Brissett gets hurt they have literally no chance to win.
Well, it depends on the situation, right? What if Brissett gets hurt when they have a 2 TD lead? What if he gets hurt with two minutes left in a tie game?

Which is where Michael Vick makes sense. He's a running threat until he gets injured. We only need him for what, 2 quarters?

Close, the backup QB is going to be Nate Ebner running the Wildcat offense. Heck, BB might use it for stretches even if Jacoby isn't injured.

If Brisset gets hurt, I'm hoping for something like seven OL, direct shotgun snaps to LGBT in the wildcat, and Develin and Marty offset either side as dual FBs. That makes more sense to me than having Jules play QB and running standard plays with no chance of passing anyway.

This is actually an interesting thought. Not that I think the Pats would plan for it, but it's there a speedy runner (RB, WR, etc.) who isn't JE (ie not an important part of the offense - in case of injury) that could learn a few run plays and at least be a threat to scramble? Essentially Vick without losing a roster spot...

I can't believe we're essentially discussing who catches if Leon, Hannigan, Vazquez and Holaday all get hurt in the same game.

Has an NFL team ever needed to start their 3rd string QB in week 3?

If they feel JG is a plausible backup -- just to hand the ball off to Blount -- I get it and would not waste practice reps or a roster spot either. At all costs, they have to avoid JJ Watt sending Jules to injured reserve. Going forward, barring a Brady injury, Edelman is more valuable than JG or Brissett.

Just wanted to step in and say that this is one of the most bizarre situations i can remember in the recent history of the league, and the first time I can remember where a "starting" quarterback got injured and the fan-base basically did not panic whatsoever (at least from what I've seen so far).

If you are running wildcat, put Cyrus Jones in to take snaps and have Devlin and Ebner block. He's shifty enough that if he gets through the line he can house it.

It's week 3, they're 2-0, and we're having Peyton Manning and wildcat discussions. It's always something with this team.

The problem is if Brisset gets hurt you're possibly not only punting away the HOU game but you can then also be screwed for the Bills game, with only Jimmy G who may or may not be ready to go. Think it's better to get a vet in here to start learning asap.

Usually when the starting quarterback gets hurt there isn't a Hall of Famer replacing him in two weeks anyway.

If Brisset is going to get every snap in practice this week, and the vet is a terribad player like Ryan Lindley who at least was in camp with the team already, how much of a benefit is it? Im sort of surprised they arent bringing anyone in, I dont remember an NFL team being this thin at QB heading into a game, but I dont think they are actually punting Buffalo win equity

Fingers crossed Blount doesnt get dinged up though. Watching Brandon Bolden run into stacked lines for three quarters has to be some circle of hell.

Lindley was such a non-realistic option that I failed to even mention his name.

But perhaps not as sinful as releasing Valentine or Derby to make room for any of the unmentionables.

What's the NFL rule on working a guy out without signing him? One practice? Maybe the unsigned vet could go work out at Camp Brady this week.

Even if JG was in a limited back-up QB role for the Texan game, IMO there would have to be close to a 100% certainty no further injury to the a/c would be risked to a late hit/cheap shot or even a fumbled hand-off where he had to dive and cover the ball.

IMO there is a penny wise/pound foolish element to this.

If they need a back-up QB cannon fodder for 2 weeks at the cost of the 53rd roster spot that may not be a crazy sacrifice.

Jimmy G goes back behind the break glass in case of emergency sign in two weeks. They can take a little bit of risk there on further aggravating the injury if they think he can handle a limited role.

The wild cards are that this is a very short week of practice and that there's a possibility that JG may be ready to play (at least in an emergency backup role) against the Rexies. I can understanding BB pausing a bit before cutting a player off the back end of the roster just to bring in a guy that in all probability will sit on the bench for one week. It does suck if the cut player gets claimed and turns out he could have been a useful depth option later in the season when the injuries mount.

They ran a direct snap a few years ago with Kevin Faulk near the goal line. Two point conversion. It worked. I remember Brady saying that they practiced this in training camp but only ran it once that year. It appears they have some of these plays in their playbook.

I think the short week really changes things here in terms of options. It's going to be hard enough getting Brissett ready in the normal offense with only a few walkthroughs -- unless they've been spending real time in camp on alternative offenses like the Wildcat I have a hard time seeing anything too creative being installed in three days as a contingency for Jacoby going down. I suspect that, assuming Jimmy G. isn't available, they pick up some bland veteran backup, give him a dose of the offense as quickly as possible, and then go all-in on the running game and a few basic pass plays if disaster should strike.

Lose, that's a great catch. Who knew that about AJ Derby? He's definitely the guy. Knows the offense and is used to being a backup quarterback. Also doesn't look fragile or too short to play the position.

Ryan Mallet is not available. You have to consider the actual options available to them, and AJ is looking like the right one. No need to cut someone off the roster, etc.

An Arkansas insider said today "[the Razorbacks] had no need of him at QB so he became a good TE."

Take that however you like.

Right - this is exactly it. If you bring in a guy, he's gonna get 2 practices max to learn the offence, and those two practices are going to be dominated by the presumptive starter(Brisset). Any practice time you give him hurts Brisset (and win probability). I honestly think you'd be better off running Edelman as 2nd QB than a veteran flyer - there's just not enough time to expect to get anything out of a new guy. If Brisset gets hurt, its pretty much run every down or wildcat, or something else like that.

I read this morning on Patriots.com , the speculation of the Pats looking to trade for either Matt Cassel or Brian Hoyer. Seemed highly unlikely to me which made it seem especially strange coming from the normally level-headed PFW team.

It would have been nice if the Patriots already had a young quarterback on the practice squad, somewhat familiar with the offense and ready to be elevated to the active roster. But they don’t, so, what’s the next-best thing?

Here is one plausible option: Matt Cassel.

Tom Brady’s former backup played here from 2005 through ’08, the year he subbed for the entire season when Brady was injured. Cassel is currently Tennessee’s backup QB. However, a trade for Cassel seems possible. The Titans have a young quarterback on their practice squad and could, in theory, elevate him to back up starter Marcus Mariota. Cassel’s considerable experience in this Patriots offense would conceivably make it easier for him to learn the playbook on short notice.

Furthermore, Titans GM Jon Robinson served for many years in the Patriots scouting department, and he left of good terms, so, there’s an established relationship between the two sides that makes this move a distinct possibility.

Brian Hoyer, another erstwhile Brady backup, is in a similar situation in Chicago, where the Bears have a young quarterback waiting on their practice squad. Whether or not the Bears would be willing to make a deal is another matter, but perhaps the recent joint training camp sessions between the two squads established some positive lines of communication between New England and Chicago.

Cant really see them making a trade for a player that likely gets cut in two weeks. Guess its price dependent, for a seventh round pick whatever, but not sure that would entice a team to make a trade.

It would be so Patriots-like (circa 2001-present, and completely UN-Patriots-like prior to that) for Brissett to go down and have AJ Derby come in and it turns out that he's.....pretty darned good.

No doubt he'd be worse than Jimmy G and worse than Jacoby B, but he's on the team and doesn't require a roster move and might be better than just taking a knee.
There's a Belichickian logic and efficiency, no panic, next man up and value perspective that that non-roster move has. It makes sense depending upon the true severity of the JG injury.

It would not surprise me in the least to find out that he's taken a few dozen snaps and lead a couple drives during training camp/practice...

Shefter said this morning that the Pats hadn't called anyone and are still evaluating.
If Jimmy is an option for Week 4 I don't expect BB to bring anyone in for one game. It is so obviously the Belicickian thing to do.
