Even with vicodin there are some people who'd be out and foggy/loopy all day and others who barely feel it. Some who love it, some who barely feel it, and some who hate it.
Vicodin does almost nothing for me. I mean, it helps a bit, but not to the extent it alters my state and not noticeably more than anything otc. I've gotten scripts for it for dental work a few times, a couple physical injuries and a few times for nasty cases of strep/bronchitis (as opposed to codeine cough syrup which is more expensive if your insurance sucks) and I've barely ever touched it. To reference the pharm thread i probably need to throw some out because I have about eight-ten bottles of it that I've never even touched and the other day found two scripts I never even got filled. To your pint i know people that refuse it no matter what because they hate it or it constipates them.

I'm on Oxy for a nasty case of sciatica (failed laminectomy, years of running on pavement). It has a slight tendency to give me the giggles, just like some other controlled substances, but not the loopy reaction others have had. OTOH, it's probably pretty low dosage. I hate taking it (sparingly), but I hate +10 pain even more. I'm guessing my reaction time is slowed down. I don't drive when I've taken it in the previous 3-4 hours. I'd think this would be very bad for an NFL qback.

Is that a one-time thing? It seems like there's a debate on cortisone shots - my sister told me not to have a second in my shoulder, my actual doctor was fine with it. What's the research on marcaine?
It's mostly about long-term consequences, so it applies to regular people, not to NFL players, but yes there is a debate on cortisone shots.
Lancet article: http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(10)61160-9/abstract
(Criticisms of metaanalyses apply, however). Another issue not relevant to NFL players is that cortisone shots tend to be profitable for practices.

It appears there are some studies on marcaine and other local anesthetics but I'd defer to clinical experience here. (For what it's worth, however, if you google "marcaine joint", nearly all the suggestions are variants on "marcaine chondrotoxicity").

Edit: because blinded studies on surgery are difficult and ethically thorny, there is almost no real research on surgical outcomes. In most cases the best guidance comes from the clinical experience and gut feel of a good surgeon or PT (one who is not influenced by profit motives and reimbursement incentives). That's also why doctors can disagree.
Cortisone shots are a semi-exception and have a small amount of reasonable data.

I'm with you on this, opioids have never really made me anything but drowsy. I do get scripts filled because they come in handy during my occasional nightmarish bouts of insomnia. I learned that lesson the hard way when I had no percs or vics during a 13 day stretch when I was sleeping 15-30 minutes a day (the awful part was that by the time I reached the hallucination stage I was flashing back to a bad college acid trip).

The topical pain killers (Novocain, lidocaine) do nothing for me. Not even a little. And doctors always want to make me prove it to them. The easiest adventure in that regard was sinus surgery two years ago where the anesthetist insisted on giving me a lidocaine neb despite my assurances that it wouldn't work. She poured me a triple and then began a conversation and 10 minutes later admitted that I was right, if I could talk clearly after ten minutes of inhaling the shit it wasn't working.

Did the thread title get changed because of news about Edelman at QB? I'm not seeing any mention of Edelman the last page and a half and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I believe that a tweet was posted in the game thread (maybe Ian Rapoport?) saying that the Pats were rushing to get Edelman ready to be the emergency QB option.

Belichick using the media for Houston to prepare for Brissett and the option of possibly Edelman.......so Jimmy G is a go then right?

Just 'cause it has the same mechanism of action doesn't mean that it has the same effects.

Just ask those poor fools who took Vioxx.
Well they are different as vioxx was cox2 selective.

15mg toradol iv is the same as 800 mg ibuprofen po.

Im with doc. Which is easy to say since marciano cant kick my ass cross country. I think

I'm willing to admit it was psychosomatic or I was just drowsy from being in an er at 3 am.

Maybe on some pain relief scale, but it's still not the same. It's a dihydropyrrolizine, which none of the oral NSAIDs are, and has an extra phenyl group compared to ibuprofen. And all the NSAIDs have varyling levels of cox2 selectivity.

Lots of fans in Baltimore Indy and New York woke up pretty mad this morning. Love it. The final week of no Brady is against the dysfunctional Bills too. Suck it Roger.

Got ya. Ok. I meant vioxx cox2 only where as nsaids do both cox1 and 2. But thank you, I blocked orgo and chemical structures from my brain.
