He turns 29 tomorrow. That's a lot of years for a catcher who does not have the nickname "Pudge."

Locking up even an All Star caliber catcher through his age 38 or 39 season is bold. But at $14M per year, it shouldn't be a burden in the back half. He hits well enough to slide over to DH eventually. Of course, Ohtani will still be under contract too. That's a future Dodgers problem though.

Interesting. Assuming it starts this year, that's 8 years of FA and 2 years of arb. Considering JT Realmuto signed for 115/5 when he hit the market 3 years ago, this looks pretty sweet for LA, even if Smith sucks for years 9 and 10.

I would assume both sides understand this is probably more of a 6-7 year, 140M extension with dead years, Dodgers are fine with it now to lower AAV, and Smith wants to be a career Dodger.

Smith has averaged over 4 fWAR over the last 3 years. If he keeps that up they can DFA him halfway through this thing and still come out ahead.
