That video was amazing. Casas with some Kaufmanesque shit there, never breaking character. “There‘s a lot of ways to score runs, Dommo,“ said with no smile. “I’m sure jogging around the bases after the HR was a lot easier than scoring from first on a triple.“ Props, too, to Dom. He was suppressing laughter during the questions but played it straight during the answers. Very, very funny.
20 days is the max. Presumably if he's otherwise healed, it shouldn't take that long. Especially if all that voodoo visualization stuff he does actually works.
Dommo. I imagined Dom-O. These guys have to have their nicknames. I guess when you spend so much time together: spring training, flights, practice, weight room, etc. When is Big Rig coming back? That's one of the best.
Perhaps they give him a crack at running the technical part of the operation to see if he can sort out the shitty camera work and daily video glitches.
On yesterday's NESN pre-game show they were talking about Devers and were showing him taking grounders at third before the game. Alternating with him was Casas. Is anyone surprised he's taking grounders at third but he still can only pretend to swing a bat?
When I consider that swinging a bat is how he hurt himself--no, not really, it doesn't surprise me.
Is he just "taking" grounders or is he also catching and then launching the ball across the diamond to 1B? If it's the latter, then yes I'm surprised. If it's just taking grounders, no. Muscles/rib cage connection tissue wouldn't be stressed in a similar way

No he was throwing across the diamond. That was my point. I mean, first of all, I'm sort of surprised he's taking grounders at third ever. I thought that ship sailed a while ago.
Putting aside any relation to his injury (I have a hard time thinking he'd risk injury or setback), for Casas "taking grounders at third" is probably no different than "doing the post-game interview on NESN," "laying on the grass pre-game" or "breathing through his eyelids."
Yeah I suppose that’s the best case scenario, and maybe the most likely. That it’s just Triston being Triston and no one told him to do it.

I'm hoping that 15 years from now, after retiring from a hall of fame career with the Sox, Casas decides to have a second act as a stand up comic or, better yet, in the booth. He could be a worthy successor to Eck/Remy.

I don't know if we've gotten a definitive answer on the date when it will be ok to worry about Triston Casas.
Hopefully it doesn't become a regular bit because that means that Casas isn't playing.

I love Casas in the booth and all but, uh, I'd rather he be playing baseball for the Boston Red Sox. This article was four days ago:

I also would certainly love to see him on the field rather than with a mic in his hands. However, if we are being realistic we know he's not coming back soon and I love this kids energy. I think any interviews he does will be must see tv for me. At least we are getting micro doses of Triston...
He would need at least 10 days in the minors before he could return - so at this point August 1st seems unrealistic.
Is there any reason to believe that Casas taking part in media coverage at the ASB will in any way slowing his recovery and return from the injury? I think we all want him back as quickly as possible. I don't think going to Arlington and having some fun on some broadcasts will have any impact on that. It's not like he's out riding bicycles or something.
I didn't see it in the article, but I'm pretty sure he isn't doing this without permission from the team.
With the way Smith is playing I really hope he sticks on the roster if/when Casas returns. He’s been incredibly hot at the plate the last month and his defense is very good.
Casas injury is an odd one and his return needs to be handled very cautiously. If Smith is released and Casas reinjures himself it’d have a disastrous impact on the season and Casas future too. Geez I hope not but Smiths play is affording some caution here.

Triston Casas says he could see himself being a broadcaster when he's done playing baseball, but also a carpenter, plumber, or lawyer.

Casas is pretty awesome. That said, I am starting to wonder if he makes it back this season. I hope so, but he isn't even hitting off a tee yet and we are at the All Star break. Hoping there won't be any set backs once hitting begins, but that is the most optomistic case. If you had to guess, assuming all goes well, when would everyone guess he might be in uniform for the Red Sox again? Mid to late August? I am not trying to be negative at all, just feels like one of these situations where it kind of times out on a return.
So probably will start a two week tour of AAA in a week? So I think the earliest to expect him would be around the 10th of August.
He could actually give the Sox worse production at 1B than Smith has recently with a possible slow acclimation to ML pitching.

Two things here. One, unless Casas needs more frequent days off because he needs the time to rest/recover (either his ribs or because his conditioning is off), it doesn't make a lot of sense to give him too much time off while he's trying to acclimate to ML pitching. The more reps he gets, the faster he'll return to the guy we all know and love. Two, Dom Smith doesn't really provide anything else but coverage of 1B. If Casas is playing there everyday, or nearly so, what is Smith contributing? I get the idea of wanting him around just in Casas re-injures himself, but roster spots aren't exactly plentiful. He's not a platoon option for DH since Masa is also LHH. He's not a great pinch hitting option because using him is an automatic two-fer since you'd need to bring someone else in for defense afterward. If we use August 10 as the date for Casas' return, that's three full weeks running with a less flexible bench before they gain the extra roster spot in September. That feels about as optimal as when they tried to push through 4-5 weeks running a 3-man rotation with bullpen games filling the gaps. Especially given the success the team has had the last couple months that has in large part been due to the way Cora has manipulated the lineup with the flexibility of the bench.
If Casas is able to play most every day by August 10, I suspect Smith will somehow injure himself in a post-game celebration on August 9 or so.
If you want to keep Smith around as injury insurance for Casas, there are two options.
1. Ask Smith if he'd accept a temporary assignment to Worcester with a promise to release him before 8/31 if he's not needed. That way he'd be able to make a playoff roster if he's no longer needed by the Red Sox.
2. Send down Yoshida. It would hurt the lineup, but requires no player approval and maintains maximum flexibility.
