The Lakers just aren’t that good. Really nobody is that good. These playoffs are wide open.

I understand that you have to pay the Klutch Tax with guys like KCP, but wtf is Vogel thinking throwing him out there in crunch time?

This didn’t look like a fluke. Lakers are in for a series.
Blazers being able to run Nurkic and Whiteside together to counter the Davis/Howard front court is a huge equalizer, and the Lakers lack of outside shooting makes it hard for them to keep up with Dame and CJ’s scoring. LeBron has to play out of his mind and get some better help than that or they’re in real trouble.

Game Ones complete and I am fully aroused, damn this will be fun. With the games running all day, it does feel like the NCAA tourney, except for only 1 game at a time instead of 3-4. However the one at a time the NBA is throwing out there is almost always entertaining as hell as opposed to the spotty games the NCAA tourney usually gives us.

B's and C's doubleheader tomorrow!

The Lakers will likely still win but this series will probably go the distance.

Whiteside was low-key great on defense tonight.

I said it all year; the Lakers are really thin and devoid of the kind of shot makers that can thrive playing next to LeBron. Green, KCP and Kuzma NEED to make shots for this team to beat anyone. As good as LeBron and Davis are, good teams (even ones with as many defensive problems as Portland) can scheme to take away the strengths of two players when things get tight. They may get by Portland but this team is not going to win anything unless their role players get really hot.

That 4th quarter hit and he spent every possession floating outside the 3pt line. Good stuff.
This is an interesting thing about Davis, as talented as he is, he isn't a natural post scorer. He is a fantastic face-up player, can beat bigger players off the dribble and draw a lot of fouls, but he doesn't necessarily have the classic back-to-basket game which while in many ways is outdated, is still necessary when the game is close and the defense is locked in and you have a smaller guy on you. That is why you see him on the perimeter and not getting close to the basket.

The Lakers offense in crunch time really consists of LeBron/Davis pick and roll, or LeBron/Davis drawing a double team and praying that one of their shaky role players makes a three. Good teams can neutralize the pick and roll and force the KCPs and Kuzmas to beat them. LeBron can also exploit mismatches in a way that Davis cannot, but he isn't as dominant of an offensive force as he used to be.

Lillard would actually be the perfect fit next to James and Davis. The spacing would be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Dame turned them down if the chatter about LeBron recruiting him last summer is true.

The Lakers were also linked to Kemba. That would have been pretty rough as well (and obviously much worse for Boston).

That's right. Kemba works there too and is probably a better chemistry fit.

I wonder if we will get a vintage Dion Waiters eruption this round. It always feels like its about to happen. Unfortunately, it rarely ever does.

This is the correct take. People have acted all year as if LAL/Mil/LAC are like the Warriors/Heat of past years, and it’s simply not the case. Everybody is flawed, and there are ~8 teams that could realistically win it all.

Celtics’ fans forever owe Kawhi a debt of gratitude for stringing the Lakers along for so long that all the other third stars signed elsewhere.
